The exclusive focus is a large part of the HAMB's success. It's a cool niche to poke around in.
One certain thing that will come of "loosening the restrictions" will be the loss of part of the very iden***y of the place.
Just because many are jumping up an down licking the windows and trying to get in doesn't mean it is a good idea to open the door. The place would never be the same. Backing @Ryan all the way.

Here's a wild, out there thought. Maybe, just maybe, the discretion should be exercised before things are posted.;)

That is where everyone went. Smart phones and Instagram. At 75 I'm too old to own one so those guys that were GREAT in the "Old Hamb Days" are lost forever.

I used to post pictures from the Street Rod Nationals which a lot of people apparently enjoyed. I take my camera every year and I snap pictures of "details" as well as whole cars. I expanded and also started taking pictures of vehicles that were not of any particular interest to me, but I thought others on the Hamb would like them. Then I downloaded all the pictures (3 days worth) and stored them in a folder.
Then I sorted thru them trying to pick the best ones and the interesting ones. Then I spent a fair amount of time downloading them onto the Hamb. Several extra hours of my time and effort were expended in going from taking pictures just for my use and taking extra pictures for the benefit of others.

I posted a whole bunch of pictures. In doing so, I failed to remember that a pro-street tire was unacceptable when I posted a beautiful black 55 Chevy. Simply picked the wrong picture of the car because I was looking for the best picture. I had others that were a different angle and couldn't tell it had the really wide rear tires. Simple mistake while tryijng to post the best content.

Had another picture which was of no interest to me, but thought others might like it because it was uncommon. Turns out that it was a 1966 Rambler American Wagon.....NOT a 1965. Its the same body, but they changed the grille and stuff up front. Kinda like the differences between a 52,53,54 Ford changed. Not being an expert on AMC cars, another oversight on my part. How many people even know that AMCs had different grilles. Should I spend more time researching AMCs just to provide that picture? And, I see a lot of other cars that I don't know what they are much less exactly what year they were manufactured

So, because of two minor oversights, ALL of the pictures I posted that were good were deleted along with the two mistakes. Neither were intentional, but Hours of effort were tossed aside..........

So now, as you say, I exercise discretion BEFOREHAND about spending my time trying to provide a thread with lots of cars from the Nationals. I don't spend my time taking pictures of things that aren't of interest to me and I don't post large numbers of the ones I took . I simply don't waste my time doing that when I know that not noticing some small detail in a picture or two may result in the whole thing being deleted. I simply just don't create that kind of thread anymore.

So my discretion beforehand means a lot of people don't get to enjoy seeing what I saw.............:) I would not be surprised if there are many others besides me, who don't post a lot of interesting, useful, or helpful information for the same reason. Here is some of what you missed because of my discretion...............

I get where you are coming from, and I can see that your (and many other's) intentions are well placed.
But..... every coin has two sides. Try to see the dilemma in play here.
What do you think will happen if "some discretion" is shown and borderline images are allowed to remain???
What do you think the HAMB would end up being as a result???
Give us your honest answers. Let's see how well you know the human psyche.:)

absolutely ... all anyone has to ask themselves before they post is "is this in the style of 1965 and older?" It is just as simple as that

Why can't you just delete the bad or non conforming pictures? (unless it is most of them) Is it more work than deleting the whole thread?

If the offending pictures are in the first post, the whole thread gets deleted. It is more work to edit and sometimes based on the amount of off topic material it just makes more sense to delete. Now though the entire thread may just get moved to the off topic forum. It really amazes me at times that long term members seemingly have no idea the focus of the site....

You are ***uming that the two offending pictures were "intentionally" placed and that I realized I had made a mistake. I ***ure you that wasn't the case.

Stop and think about it for a moment..........every picture posted has to be scrutinized for some minute detail that might not be acceptable . Not much of a problem when doing a couple of pictures......but when you are trying to provide 40-50 (?) pictures selected from about 200 pictures taken........its easy to miss a detail on one or two of them.

It should be obvious that anyone trying to provide coverage pictures of an event is doing so to enhance the site rather than to create problems. Honestly I can't always tell which wheel is billet and which isn't. I didn't even think about the Rambler not being a 65 because I'm not familiar with their styles from year to year. What you are overlooking is that I had a lot of other pictures that I "selectively" did not post because I recognized a problem or just thought "maybe this isn't acceptable". Those weren't the only 2 pictures out of appx 200 pictures that had an issue. So I was being selective, I just didn't accomplish it "perfectly".

Rather than go through this year after year, I just decided not to do it anymore .

I can ***ure you that minute details do not get threads deleted. For people that don't know the difference, can't tell or just don't care simply post the threads in the off topic forum...

When I first joined this site I was building my Austin g***er. I was excited to be building a car I'd dreamed of for many decades, and started a build thread shortly after joining. That went really well for maybe a month, with lots of positive input. Then a person with a jillion posts began cutting down my build, and soon a couple others piled on also! Then the guys who seemed to enjoy it disappeared, or went quiet. Seems once the few bullies began tearing down my build others were afraid to say anything.
I went on with my build, but deleted all my thread and the posts I made. I didn't give up on the car, or the HAMB, but I sure was discouraged by the mentality of a few here then. It's been over 15 years now, and I'm still enjoying my Austin g***er, and have a bunch of miles on it over those years. I'm glad I stuck around and love watching other's builds and seeing what the members here are capable of building!

I miss being in my early 30s and full of piss and vinegar, instead of my late 50s and scared to go outside when it gets below 40°, but I'll bet Ryan and he other mods don't miss the p&v parts so much. It was a different place in 2001. There's a mind boggling amount of information here, old and new.

    @ekimneirbo

I went back and re read your STREET ROD NATS coverage from 2021 and this simply does not hold water. A solid chunk of the photos you posted were cars wearing wheels that were too big or carrying some other tell that knocked them clean out of our lane. That is just reality. And if you are expecting moderators to surgically pick through a mountain of photos and selectively police every single one, you are going to be disappointed every time.

Frankly, I expect the people who post here to have at least a working understanding of what makes a car traditional. And if they do not, we have built an entire ecosystem here that gives them plenty of chances to learn without being s**** fed.

Fellas, this is a TRADITIONAL hot rod and custom forum. It has been that way for thirty two years. We are not changing the rules. We are not softening the edges. If what we do is not your thing, that is fine. Just keep moving. No drama required. Sincerely.

First off I miss Germ and Desoto, Groucho, Etc. There was a time when you reared your head around here and weren't in line or added value the flames were intense.

But that's all personal feelings, factually the HAMB is a gift of magnitude.

Tech Week is a thing of beauty, Hell the HAMB was, is , and will be source of sooooooo much good knowledge and tech. To name the guys I have learned, leached, stolen, plagiarized, preached, and benefitted from is longer than this thread already.

I was a full blown devoted retard fresh from the VW/Porsche world. But at that a very fast and low world that created hours and hours of fun. Truth be told I still cross that street every once in a while. But I don't post it here, I also play fairly heavy in the 4x4 game. Again I don't post or anticipate finding it here. LS stuff is much like the ****els I understand and can fix them when needed, but they are god awful ugly and have no place in my current life.

Then one of my best friends in the world (may he rest in peace) gave me a '49 Chevy Truck. I was 21 then, The rest is History.

The HAMB was an invaluable source of knowledge, advice, humor, and ribbing from which that experience forever changed my Internal Combustion Path. Tech Week was merely a showcase of the talents on a World Cl*** scale.

The HAMB has been here for tough times too. Hamb Andy, the Reno Air Race Tragedy, Countless struggles with Disease, and Loss of really Great People and Friends. We just simply can't let that family aspect fade away. It is important. A Tradition if you will, it has grown to be an expectation for many of us.

The HAMB is a site for the Traditional Car. So if you seek advice or want to post on off topic things do so, have at. But if you do it here and you get spanked for it, well that's the way it is. Admirable for trying you're just not in the game set up to play here.

I don't always agree with this place and have been spanked myself. Yet here I am. Not because of a weak cons***ution or FOMO. But because this place tows the line. Consistency is rare in the World, Tradition is born of Consistency. It takes P***ion, Integrity, Conviction, and Understanding to be Consistent.

The Old Breed through these traits brought us what we now know as TRADITIONAL Hot Rods and Customs.

Ryan, please bring back Tech Week.

Ryan, please don't apologize for what the HAMB is, no need. You're stayin' true to the course set a long time ago. This place ain't for everyone, and that's ok.

Ryan, this place may eventually dry up and blow away like a Horse Drawn Wagon, but for now there's enough of us out here still so completely enamored by the Early Iron I think you/we are safe for a lengthy while.

Lastly Ryan and the Moderators in your responses I believe you have shown far more patience and understanding than required. LS Engines, 18" Billet or larger things need to stay right where they belong. That is in the "New Trend" section of life. Plain and simple LS Engines & etc are not traditional. They are newer trending aspects.

Seems simple enough, Tradition implies a returned to or long standing path or course. None of the new **** has earned that time yet. So keep it on the Cover of Teen Beat.

Just some simple thoughts from a very simple man who likes the same ****.

Once again thank you for letting me get them out.

I'll see you on the road!

    - Tim

I can't find that 2023 thread, was it yours and the whole thing deleted? or did you post pics on someone elses thread? have a link? I looked at all the threads on the dates you posted above and found nothing..

Edit. I found it. the rambler is a 1969, the 55 chev has rear tires about 20 inches wide. and another car with a tunnel ram (they came out in 68) and a 32 ford with visible IFS

I found the 2023 thread. I deleted it. For reasons like this:

    And many, many others...

These cars are not drifting off topic, they are parked squarely outside the fence. We do not cover this kind of stuff on the HAMB and we never have. This is not new policy. This is the bedrock.

Now listen, a man is not judged by his ability to define a traditional hot rod. Some of the best people in my life could not tell you what a hot rod is if their lives depended on it, and that is perfectly fine. There is no shame in not having the depth of knowledge. Nobody is born knowing this stuff.

But it is painfully obvious that your definition of traditional hot rodding does not line up with the one this place has been built on for more than three decades. And that is okay too. No harm done.

What is not okay is parachuting in and accusing moderators of being heavy handed when you are very clearly posting cars that do not belong here. If you want to participate, the smart move is to slow down, read, and actually absorb what we are trying to protect. This place works because the line is clear and the rules are consistent. Calling foul when you are the one out of bounds is not fair to me or my moderators.

    Sincerely.
