This engine seems to like an oil additive. Without it, the lifters tick when fully warmed up at idle. With it, no. So that’s why.

The oil filter on this little Hemi is directly over the starter, and the (wrapped) exhaust. . I saved a little mess by tucking a trash back around the starter and hanging over the exhaust. Otherwise it’s 50 miles of smoke until the header wrap gets the oil burned off.

If you go out on your deck and you’re naked, you live in the country. If you go out on your deck and your neighbor is naked, you’re in the suburbs. If you go out on your deck and you and your neighbor are both naked, you’re in Florida.

That also happened to my son who, against his better judgement, dropped off his new Bronco for a quickie oil change.
Zero oil pressure out on the highway.
After much litigation with he company he traded it in.

reportedly wrap ca cause the carbon to cook out of the metal leading to failure. I look for pre-SM oil, has zinc.

Thank goodness you don't have an HOA to punish you for working on your own car in your own driveway.

I actually had considered putting that into the story, but thought missing the drain pan was equally correct, and created a bigger mess. Wouldn't have sounded right with both mishaps in the same story. :D

Diesel oil is the worst with all the black carbon from blow-by. Any clothes are permanently stand.

I change the oil in all 9 of my vehicles. That’s why I like my gravel drive way.

It seems like I manage to get fluid up my sleeve of my shirt or sweatshirt no matter if it’s motor oil, trans fluid or axle lubricant that I’m draining…

Years ago I changed the transmission fluid in my daily driver, I decided to hold the gallon jug the gear oil was supposed to go in between my feet with a funnel balanced on top, unfortunately, the moment I started pouring the oil into the funnel the funnel slid backwards, dumping that smelly 90W oil down my pants legs and into my shoes. 20260117_110348.jpg 20260117_110433.jpg 20260117_110449.jpg To keep that disaster from ever happening again I built this tool. The clip holding the funnel ring once held a bed frame together, the hook holding the drain pan was made from coat-hanger wire.

I recently called the Subaru dealer for $ /oil filter change for our outback, I'm having health issues, $120, so I buy 5 qts syn mobil 1 $25 subaru oil filter $10 at Walmart. $35 total, Drive it on my lift, oil filter on top, oil pan drain plug in opening in that big plastic shield under engine, could not be any easier or quicker, So..... I paid myself again, this time $85 for 15 minutes of my time AND yes I gave it the same 120 point inspection the dealer does, no leaks, brake pads good. 120 point my ***.

Auto zone and advance make really good driveway cleaners . you can also use speedy dry and a 12 inch piece of 2x4 and just grind in into the surface a trick my dad thought me when I was 12 pumping gas at his station ( child labor) .I used the cleaner when I changed the oil in my 69 Camaro with the filter the guy had in the trunk when I bought the car didn't know it was wrong size til I fired it up in the driveway and puked 3 new quarts on the tar but it cleaned up nice. Nice roadster too! :)

A big piece of cardboard has saved many spills in my case.

I do all of my own oil changes. I can’t stomach the thought of letting someone else work on my cars. I care about them way more than any hired mechanic would.

No "mechanic" is doing oil changes. Those are handled by the minimum wage kid who'll cross thread the drain plug or leave it or the filter loose enough to deposit your fresh oil in the middle of the street a block away.

I am an optimist. I always think it won't happen, yet I fail at this at no less than a 92% rate. I gave up years ago.

Many parallels to my time at the auto wreckers, only it was a pan of gear oil from a front diff. And nothing like having your head pinned to the floor by a creeper wheel. Bye bye ponytail, after a bottle of Sunlight liquid to remove.
