A lot of us here have similar childhoods, I remember buying a Schwinn Traveler 26", 10+ or so, I was too short for it, had to be very careful starting/stopping , had the Strumy Archer 3 speed, a nut buster when the cable got out of adjustment. That bike was with me till I got/build my first car at 16, MANY miles, versions, painted it, kustomized it, remember putting old baseball cards with clothes line clips so it had a motor sound, used conduit to make dual exhaust, hauled the papers (paper route)in bags over seat 12-16, 4+ years, many hours, miles, memories with it. That bike was my first Hot Rod and it was an important part of my childhood. I gave it to my nephew after driving my car and of course he did not appreciate or take care of it, very shortly he turned it into ****, left it outside in Winter.

    Hello,

Here is a “Twilight Zone” moment. If one notices the cover of the 1962 Hot Rod Magazine, who is on the cover? One of the most iconic hot rod roadsters to be built in So Cal. It was a photo of Tom Mc Mullen and his wife, “Wild Rose.” Why is that a coincidence?

For one, many years later, @hotrodjack33 became a fantastic artist with skills to make hot rods come to life in all aspects of artwork in the Street Rodder Magazines, created, owned and published by Tom Mc Mullen or his divorced wife, “Wild Rose.”

But, there was no mistaking the cool 32 roadster on the cover. So, check off one coincidence. The other coincidence was that I was a contributing editor for the series of magazines created by the staff, during our photojournalist years. I met both in the offices a**** others that worked on the editorial staff, including a young Pat Ganahl.

Then of course, the HAMB connection with @hotrodjack33 … YRMV

I was 12 years old in '62, riding gravel roads on an overhauled, hand me down, CCM bicycle that was hanging in my Granddads shed ever since my Dad got his first car.. That was just one of several projects that my Dad had built or restored for me over the years. Along with a soapbox racer, a row boat, etc.
I was the apprentis helper on most projects. My first legally on the road car didn't come along until a few years later, but early on the yard started filling up with whatever heap I could afford from my meager earnings from MoJo's Car Wash and cutting lawns. Wish I still had all those old cars. Before being old enough to legally drive a favorite pastime was loading all your buddies into one of these $25. or less bargain barges and running them through the trails in the woods. None survived (the cars, not my buddies).
We could name almost any car coming down the road at 12 years of age and competed at being the first to call it. A few years later, motorcycles were an early p***ion since they licensed you at 15 years of age and there was an overabundance of junk military surplus Harley 45s in this area.
It was right around '62 when I started being exposed to hot rod magazines. A friend's mother bought him several every month just to peak his interest in reading more and we all leafed through those magazines until the pages were ragged. Good memories!

I was a 3-year-old in San Rafael, CA while my dad was in the Air Force there. I’m told my first car project was to shoot 3 plastic darts from my dart gun through the filler neck and into the gas tank of my dad’s ‘60 Valiant. Dad put some darts in a jar of gasoline to see if they would melt - they didn’t so he just left the darts in the tank.

In 62 I was in suffering through second grade with a teacher who shared my last name but was no relation. That woman hated me! Got my tonsils removed on my birthday that year. Not much going on with cars yet, but I loved my bicycle!

I was still five years away from being born, but the early sixties is still my favorite era of hot rodding. Probably largely due to American Graffiti, which I have watched many times.

11 years old. Memories of riding with my Grandfather on his Flat-head Harley, and riding in the rumble seat of my cousin Buzzy Wingard's Model A.

I was stationed at China Lake Naval Ordnance test station. I launched the drone from the pad using a jato bottle for launch. The drone was then flown by remote control, f4s then shot a sidewinder at it. Sidewinder was developed at China Lake. After the mission the drones landed by a large parachute and then we recovered it out in the desert with 4x4 s. Got paid to boondock Uncle Sams vehicles.

I vote for the one on the left. He's got his right foot flat down and the left going for the clutch.
The real reason is that I've seen pics of you today, and you've got his ears;)

Didn’t everyone use playing cards with a clothes pin? Someone in our neighborhood came up with the idea of wrapping an inflated ballon around the fork much deeper rumble, wore out a lot of balloons . I was 2 in 62

I used to have photographic evidence of where I was around 1962, 61 actually. I had my friend take a picture of me and my 1949 Alstate box scooter! But about 26 years ago when I moved into my current house, that mini album got lost! I hated it, it had some of my best photos in it! I keep hoping I will find it, but about to give up after a 1/4 century being lost!

Don't give up, I found the very first 1962 hot rod magazine in a box of odds & ends that had been in storage ever since my parents p***ed way, it had been missing for a 1/2 century! HRP
