Guys - I'm transplanting a Studebaker 289 V8 and T10 four-speed (with a Hurst floor shifter) into a '51 Stude Commander that came with a stuck 232 original V8 and Detroit Gear auto trans. What I'd like to do is replace the thru-the-floor brake with a pair of hanging pedals, reinforcing the firewall and mounting both brake and clutch cylinders. (I'm going to remove the dash as part of a re-wire and gauge update.) I need to replace the floor pans, anyway. I'm looking for ******mendations for the hydraulic clutch. Thanks much!!
All I got is do your research, a lot of stuff out there with less than great reviews. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy the budget priced ones, they will let you down.......... On the side of the road!
I would look for one that the slave cylinder mounts outside the bellhousing. Much easier to service if it fails.
If your going to use a hydraulic TO bearing I recommend a Howe or Ram…. I may hurt some feelings but in our dirt circle track car all other brands failed especially in the offseason. Some didn’t mak it a month.
I did this on my Ford. Wilwood 3/4" clutch master and a Speedway 7/8" external slave. Also an AFCO braided line. I made up a 1/4" steel plate for the brake master and clutch master. I'd suggest sandwiching the firewall from both sides. 3/16" should be OK.
I did the swap on a friend's car using slave cylinder and master clutch cylinder for a 1995 Camaro. Works great, and if he ever had an issue he can buy replacement parts at any auto parts store. I made up the mounting bracket for the slave cylinder on the bellhousing, and fabricated a thicker plate to mount the master on the firewall. I much prefer using factory parts just to make things easier to replace if needed.
I installed a Howe hydraulic TO bearing in the toploader I had in my '65 Falcon...I got about 2 seasons and 2500 miles before it failed/leaked. Simple O-ring replacement repaired the leak...but trans had to come out which was a bit of a pain in the ***. I too would mount an external slave going forward.
