Here’s what it says in the book “Hot rods by Ed Big Daddy Roth. Looks like he bought it already done. I know I have seen it pictured in later show coverage with the next owner, maybe with different wheels? I bet the second picture below is with the new owner.. Man ya gotta love the panel striping!!
I've had that newer picture with the white wires saved on my computer for years, but couldn't remember who's truck it was, mystery solved. Here's a thread I started a many years ago. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/lets-see-some-closed-cab-model-a-pickups.381390/
I knew I seen it too! I thought maybe I saw it at the GNRS ?Guess I saw it in Lost Hot Rods? Thanks for posting.
WOW Advertised for $1600 hokey smokes! Even with inflation from 1960 to 2025 at 1000% it would be $16,000 Dan
It is still alive and well in S.L.C. and Mike still owns it. I bug him about getting it out every time I se him, and he keeps saying next year for sure with a grin. Mick
Man every time I see the photo that Mark posted with the white wheels it makes me think of Rocky’s stolen truck.
That thing is everything a hot little model A truck should be, in my eyes. I’m guessing the next owner changed the interior to black? Don’t really matter, I love it either way.
@ronzmtrwrx If you read the text of the Lost Hot Rods article @Moriarity posted (second column) it says it appears the original was dyed Black. I don't always believe print, but Pat was pretty careful with his writing.
I didn't read it on my old antique iPhone. Too much zooming in and such. I was planning to pull out my copy of that book later and read that. I, like you, would trust what I read from Pat to be accurate.
Hello, My brother and I have always liked Model A Coupes and the actual whole line up in those early Model A models. We liked the look of the small grille of the Model A vs the hunk of a block in a 32. So, we bought a Model A Coupe to start our hot rod/drag race adventure. We got it running and were ready to drop in the modifications, driveline, SBC motor, LaSalle transmission, etc. just when we had our shopping list, the Model A Coupe disappeared, as well as my brother’s 51 Olds Sedan. One day I saw them in the morning and when I got back from school, they were gone. In the driveway later was a shiny nice, new 1958 Impala in all of its new car glory. Ha! So, our history of the Model A Coupe was over in two weeks. Now the race scene revolved around the 58 Impala for the next three years. Jnaki So, where does that move in our family affect the two teens? By three years, we moved on to a 671 supercharged blower spec SBC motor in a 40 Willys Coupe. We decided the Model A was going to be too tight for growing teens and the Willys Coupe gave us more seat room. But, the idea of a Model A Coupe and the idea that our speed shop needed a truck to move parts, etc, was in full force. An old truck was found, but nothing came of it except for “ talk” about what we could do with the bare bones truck. Excellent idea... Note: Here we go again. This idea was before our Willys Coupe build. My brother wanted a Yellow Model A coupe first, but then also wanted a Model A Truck with a supercharged SBC motor. B/Gas cl***. But, legal for daily driving. (and parts chasing/deliveries) The only item someone would note would be the extended cab for more leg room for growing teens. Not much room inside the truck, much less than a coupe or sedan. So, as a young teen with plenty of ideas, I just kept quiet and moved along with the flow. The Impala kept us busy for those drag race years, and then actually driving it around on the streets. Finally, my brother got his idea of building a 1940 Willys Coupe for our hot rod adventure. I knew my version was going to be faster and so it had to have a parachute. Plus, I wanted a Black Model A Truck. This time I did not say anything about my brother’s choice. This black Model A Truck art would be altered years later as 20 somethings. YRMV
I used to see a guy from Ohio every year at Louisville that had a very similar truck that was a matte black finish. He was a really tall fella, probably 6’3” and he actually fit quite well in it. If I remember right, he told me the key to having room in those cabs is to thin the seat back and ditch the under seat gas tank so you can mount the seat lower.
I had a bright red one very similar with tan wires, small block was a really fun vehicle to cruise in, even got a couple of picks over the years.
If I was looking for information on Roth's truck, I would contact Jim Jacobs and Robert Williams. They might have Memory of what happened to this truck. I never seen it in person, Only pics but have always been in love with it. Same goes for "Jakes Truck" Since I was 12 years old I have been saying this same thing. "The best looking Model A Ford ever made is the 1928-29 Model A pickup" I don't think Roth Built this truck. I think he bought it and put his personal touches on it. But could be wrong
'29 Closed Cabs are great! I too have always loved that little Pickup. It'd be great to see it out and about again. IT had a solid part in inspiring mine many years ago. That and Jakes.
