I have to preface this by saying my kid is my worst influence, and seems intent on getting his parents divorced. Whenever he walks up to me with his phone in hand, I know he's either going to say, "That'd make a good g***er", or he's found something else we don't have space for. Which brings me to the '48 Anglia body he found on Marketplace a couple of years ago, and persuaded me to buy. I'm not saying I hid it from my wife, but somehow the lights at that end of the garage failed about the time it arrived, and lots of junk got piled on and around it. Fast forward two years, and we had to come clean if we ever wanted to work in it, so we dug it out and turned it around. I got away with a single text, "How long has the little gray car been hidden in the garage?", and thankfully nothing else. Now it's back in the real world, we had a chance to get a good look at it, and it is weird. I'm pretty sure it's chopped (or at least molded that way), but the rear wheel openings and fenders are clearly custom, and setup for something big. I've posted on social media, and got nowhere. Does anyone know who made it? Other than being a lot bigger, the wheel wells are positioned much higher than stock. It's most likely a race body, but I don't know anything about it, so I'm throwing it put there in case anyone can shed light on it. TIA.
Specialty Cars did Anglias and they were in LA. Thet have been mentioned here in the T-Bucket threads, The Altered thread and here. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/any-anglia-cars-or-projects-out-there.231948/ I've got a few of the ad pics but it would take a while to dig through to them.
With those rear wheelwells, it looks like it was planned for a dragster ch***is. It doesn't appear chopped to me.
....I see that you're a Newbie. Welcome aboard. If you hit the "full image" ****on you can avoid thumbnails.
Pretty sure that Anderson Industries that was located in Elkridge, Maryland made a race-weight Anglia body back in the day. Can't say if it is one with any certainty as others were doing them as well.
I am not sure if this is a full metal body or a gl*** one, but these shots can give a good comparison in regard to the rear wheel wells. As seen at the Estranged Drags in Toutle Washington.
You might try contacting Phil Lukens, owner of Blairs Speed Shop in Pasadena. He used to run a gl*** Anglia BB gas car, he might be able to give you some info. His is the candy Gold 7707 one in the Anglia G***ers thread. It had raised rear wheel openings also.
Thank you for the responses. You guys are awesome. Yeah, it's a weird one. Whoever built it did a nice job, and it came with doors, a flip front, and rear fenders that seem to be kinda sorta sized for this body.
Specialty Cars ads Both of these ads are from searching here. Tom Medlock still builds cars AFAIK, but they are high end one offs and mostly race stuff now. The Anglia kits were a move in that direction.
Yes, Phil built some really good looking race cars. Too bad we don't have a pic of his black 55 Chevy g***er with the polished Halibrands.
Tom @ Specialty Cars did Anglia ch***is only. He would do complete cars with owner bodies. The other side of that ad is Pure Heaven II
@Jacksdad619 I don't know you or your level of expertise, or what your plans are for the car. If it's going to be a full race car, I would research other builds. These are tight little boogers with all the required safety and a big engine. Seeing how others have handled packaging should be helpful. Some builds on here might help too. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hillman-husky-g***er.1128240/ which references this, a must read for quality work. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1957-hillman-husky-392-hemi-build-thread.866779/ A guy I know bought one a while back. I haven't been out to see it in person. They are nice when sorted.
Six Apeel belongs to Cedric Meeks, Russ Meeks son. Lots of fibergl*** panels, but I think the main body is steel.
The black Prefect races at Barona (our local track) and it is superb. The workmanship is next level. Yeah, they are definitely "cozy". Unfortunately, I managed to invoke the jinx (again), and the ch***is kit that Jegs sold was discontinued right after I bought the body. Their customer service rep was great though, and managed to find a roll cage kit from Rhodes Racing that will work. I appreciate the links and advice. We'll be doing most - if not all - of the fabrication, and I don't intend to reinvent the wheel on this one. I've been looking at the cars racing in the Outlaw Anglia cl*** in the UK, and drawing inspiration from them as well. Four link rear and probably strut front is most likely the direction we'll go. The engine is up in the air right now, but we have a few choices we're mulling over. I have a 440 Chrysler that's looking for a home, but I'm leaning toward a stroker 351W, possibly boosted. We have plenty of time to decide as we have a few other projects to get out of the way first. I really appreciate all the input. This thing has been in limbo for too long, and I really need to get my **** in gear. After all, I'm not getting any younger.
New development - we cleared some space around it, and it seems to be smaller than stock. If we're accounting for bumpers and stock fenders correctly, it's may be as much as 5" shorter, and 3-4" narrower. But significantly, the wheelbase is only 84" as best as we can tell. Stock, it should be 90". What the...? Gonna be twitchy.
What diameter slick would fit in those wheel openings? Could the body have been “shrunk” to be used on a fuel altered?
Both those pictures at NY National speedway on LI. Cali Bros were friends of mine, I found the 426 Hemi that was in the car. Circa 1970 Pat
