Nashville got slammed with terrible ice and downed trees and power lines. Thoughts and prayers out to all those suffering.

The ice storm clipped us barely and dumped 6” of the stuff here in Memphis but completely wiped out North Mississippi and Middle Tennessee. Yeah I’d love to go to a swap meet and hangout with a bunch of friends and parts but I’d much rather have a warming center and FEMA there to help those in need. Hell they can find another weekend or another spot to have the thing it’s not a life or death situation here. And if they lose money who cares it’s not like they quit making it, just call it the price of doing business

Perhaps you could use your free weekend now to help someone who was affected by the storms.

We're only getting the cold air down here so far, and, for us, that's bad enough. the 25 years I lived in South Carolina showed me that builders never take into account the worst case scenario regarding insulating houses.... Florida builders are not one bit better. I was born and raised in Central Virginia and we had some bitter fierce cold to deal with; ice storms are the worst. Snow can be shoveled and plowed; ice is a different thing altogether. I've heard that more than 50 people have died in this ****; this is 2026 by gosh! People shouldn't be dying because they're cold.

The roads here are still imp***able, only the interstates are somewhat clear enough to drive. You know it’s bad when the Post Office and Walmart isn’t open.

It has been in the 40’s the past couple of days so I cleared off a section of the driveway in my backyard between the house and garage and had to use a sledgehammer, salt and a shovel to get what little bit I got done. We have 4” of ice on top of a couple inches of snow :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Reminds me of the 78/79 season... think we had about a nine day stretch of downed power lines from sleet...
Last winter I spent in Virginia we lost two weeks of work due to ice and snow ac***ulation at the shop... decided to move down to South Carolina after that. And THEY are expecting record cold and snow this weekend...
Can't move any further SOUTH to escape this ****?

We had one heck of an ice storm in ‘94 shut the city down for almost a month, lesson learned here I have a Generac that’s big enough for the house and my garage. That and I added a huge pantry and another freezer so I can stay self sufficient for a few months if I have to.

I have a buddy in Kentucky and he said that the main roads are open but they haven't cleaned up the side streets yet. him and the neighbor took their equipment out to clear the fallen branches and trees in front of their place.

The marina he used to work at that collapsed and was rebuilt in 2016 was destroyed again. The roofs over the boats came down and he figures there are something like 300-400 boats sunk in the marina. we are not talking cheap boats either. He figures it will probably be a 6 months project there alone.

I'm just a little curious how many participants (vendors and buyers) you would be expecting at your swap meet given the condition of the roads and other things that have been changed by this m***ive storm?
With that much of the surrounding area still without electricity or roads you can safely travel on, do you really think your swap meet would still be that important to most of the guys that may have planned to attend?

FEMA is a Federal government emergency operation. People expect them to show up when there is an emergency, (84,000 people without electricity with cold weather qualifies as an emergency).
When the government determines it needs to show up someplace because of an emergency, they have places prearranged to stage their operations out of. Those prearranged locations are places that have been determined to be a secure location with easy access for the people that need the emergency resources. Any activity that may have been scheduled at those prearranged locations gets over ridden by the government contracts. In the past history, FEMA has canceled NASCAR races and shut down foot ball stadiums.

Do you think your little swap meet is important to those 84,000 people that are cold and have no electricity? I am sorry for your inconvenience, I'm sure those 84,000 were not inconvenienced at all. I'm sorry for your loss of income during this emergency, I'm sure no one else is going to loose any money because of this m***ive storm. I believe your outrage is misplaced, maybe you should think about the 84,000 that have had their lives turned upside down?

I’ve been a member of the AACA for years and I know for a fact they ain’t hurting for cash. If you go to a national or grand national event it’s like a Barrett Jackson for the antique crowd, there’s more Rolex’s and gold chains per capita than you could imagine. Plus they have to have insurance to have a meet like this and 9 times out of ten it will cover for loss of income………So quit your whining:mad:

you have Cape Gerardo and Louisville Kentucky coming up next month

This doesn't come off well. It's a swap meet, it's a frivolous activity. It will happen next year.

Expecting FEMA to vacate the space they're housing people in during an emergency for a one-day swap meet (plus one day load in) that will probably be poorly attended anyways due to the weather is pretty wild. Maybe the facility management and the club could have had better communication and known sooner, sure. In a crisis their responsibility is to meeting people's basic needs, not to frivolous events.

Regarding loss of income, this is why the event organizer should carry insurance to cover things including cancellation of the event unexpectedly. Usually, the venue will require it.

Considering your original post about the swap meet included the below, you're not getting much sympathy here. If I take my kid to a swap meet in a stroller, I'm a nuisance?

What a mess! Folks up here like to give our friends down South a hard time about winter storms shutting everything down, but I'll take two feet of snow over an inch of ice any day!! Good luck hope you are through the worst of it.

Geez, I apologize for creating such a stink. I’ll fix that, before the mods do.

I applaud FEMA/TEMA for providing all that they do. many folks are in need their services.
Thank God that we were blessed and had power. In 94 I had none for a week and cooked over the fireplace, and lived in that one room. I understand.

I guess that the point I failed to make was that Metro knew of the upcoming swap meet (the same weekend for 37 consecutive years) and just MAYBE they could have found a separate facility for FEMA/TEMA. Maybe not.

If the conflict was avoidable, it should have been.
If not, so be it. AACA/Stones River is out. It well could have been any other group.
I’m faulting ONLY Metro for their lack of foresight in booting out Stones River with short notice.
Thanks @gene-koning for your explanation of the structuring.

I am not a AACA/Stones River member, but I hope for their continued efforts.
I was just voicing an opinion about Metro’s planning, nothing else.

This is not the place for that.
    Back to your regular programming.
    Close the thread.

  20. Knowing you a bit for a while now, I have NO thoughts that you meant any malice towards the people that needed a place to get warm!

I was supposed to load a show truck in NW Arkansas Tuesday Morning, take it to Atlanta for an International Food Service Show, babysit it for a day & then take it back to NW Arkansas. That didn't happen (mutual decision between me & the company I was hired by). I could not image driving along that route which was exactly the area worst hit by this **** & would have been right in the middle of it.

I still can't help but wonder though why so many people think the gov't is supposed to make sure they are warm & safe....I was raised to do that myself for my family. Wood burner, Generator, extra gas/diesel, plenty of food/water, etc,etc to easily ride out any power outages, snow storms, etc!

Oh Well...Now if I could just find a cure for how the winter saps my ambition level so I can make some progress on my cars.

    God Bless

This isn’t the days of Daniel Boone anymore. You can’t really expect the population of a region of several million people to huddle around a fireplace and hunt for squirrels for food.

I find your “let them eat cake” and fend for themselves at***ude somewhat disappointing, and hope it’s not representative of the hobby in general.

    It’s 2026, not 1826.

I was planning on going but looked at the temps and decided not to go the day before it was canceled a large part of it is outside

  24. WOW...That was quite unexpected, sorry I offended you! I guess you didn't read the part about having a well stocked food & water supply. I would like to believe the vast majority of the MEN in this great hobby can & would take pride in being able to take care of their families should an emergency of any kind take place.

It might not be 1826 & I realize that testosterone levels have been dropping in men over each generation, but regardless NO man (unless having a disability that would keep him from doing it) should not be capable of taking care of their family.

The human body needs nothing different in 2026 than it did in 1826...Food, Water Shelter, Heat & all of that can be had with preparation. By the way....Our Gov't is only supposed to be there to regulate interstate commerce & keep us safe from foreign invaders, the closer we get back towards that the better IMHO.

    God Bless
