Technical '33-'39 Ford 12v conversion generator

    A little show 'n tell :)

    I just finished a very challenging 12 volt Ford generator conversion. This is a 1933 - 1939 style V8 generator with pulley fan mount. It started as stock 3-brush, 6 volt positive ground then was converted to 2-,brush, 12v negative ground configuration. Quite a bit of custom work to build.

    The top terminal, originally the output terminal was changed to the ground terminal by welding up the large hole in the case and drilling it for a #10 ground terminal. The rear brush plate was modified to accept custom Armature and Field terminals. These three terminals are needed to connect to a '55 - '64 Ford 12 volt voltage regulator.

    The armature was tested for opens, shorts & grounds. The commutator was trued on the lathe and the mica was undercut. The windings were then sealed. New 12 volt field coils were installed. The original 8-part double roller bearing ***embly was replaced with a new double-row, angular contact sealed bearing with my custom machined bearing spacer rings. It has new brushes, wiring. Insulators and flip top oilers.

    It runs beautifully and will provide many years of trouble-free service.

    nice...
    but curious about the field coils....can you share more about them and difference between the original 6V

    6v fields are wound with 17 gauge magnet wire. 12v are wound with 21 gauge wire.

    How many amp output did you end up with?

    On my test bench it pushed up over 20 amps. But as original 6v units, these were rated at about 13 amps. They would do more. But that was what Ford rated them for. I would consider this to have a similar rating as original. Fine for original incandescent ot LED lights. Its not the same as a modern alternator. So I would not recommend halogens.
