rebuilding after the crash

  1. Happy New Year everyone. Out in the shop early. My emergency call rotation is complete. Time to get back on the car. It's a runner again. This time it has oil at the rockers. There's nothing like the sweet smell of nitro in the shop. It fired right up.
Now that's done it's time to move on to a fun project. That being a Bruno cooler. More on that soon. PXL_20260101_182935018.MP.jpg

  4. This was a fun project today. The Bruno gets. real hot along with the converter. I can smell the fluid. It smells like rotten sulfur. To cool the unit I made this. Quick connect lines will go from the Bruno to the pump and cooler. It has a switch that turns it on and off based on the temp. Fancy units sell for 3500-4500 dollars. I bought a cart for 50.00 a pump for 150.00 half off at PRI. I had the cooler and fan and battery. The lines from the attached cooler will be re proposed for the new cooler. My local hydraulics place had the quick connect fittings. I will make the hoses Sunday. The welds will get ground down a little then primed and painted.
This is a great thing to have when your going rounds. I was so desperate in Havanna I emptied a CO2 bottle on the converter and trans pan to cool it off. PXL_20260104_000316142.jpg

That’s a nice setup Brian and will sure make goin rounds way better and much easier on the Bruno and trans we sure needed that at mokan as well

  6. The cooler is done. I just need to connect the wires permanently. I will be testing it hooked up to the car today. One more winter project checked off the list. Next up changing the blown out speakers on the outside of the trailer. PXL_20260110_214141550.MP.jpg

  7. The cooler was tested. It's all good.
I need to make a new front brake line. With the torsion bar removed I need to re route the line. I want to start the engine soon. I want to test the Bruno and lenco. I need brakes to do that.

Some of those pit cooler's are ridiculous expensive..
Your program , what converter temp do you try to keep temp @ when staging & what temp clime to in a p*** ?
Are you in the experimenting ,
As maybe a gallon or 2 tank with a viewing top with filter to see if any debris present , & flow rate adjustable
To get a good heat transfer and cooling.
20 ish so years ago I made one similar
    Used a aluminum radiator 16 x 16
My temp's I try to keep in the
    160 - 170 range But not a Bruno.

  11. I set the Bruno pressure at 100 lbs at 3000 rpms. At idle it's 90 lbs.
The cooler has a thermal switch that activates at 180 degrees.
The Bruno has a filter that can be inspected and cleaned. It's done often.
I might hook up a temp sensor to the data logger.

  12. A new front brake line was made. The brakes were bled. We didn't fire the car do to the high winds and temps in the single digits. We have to open the doors to fire it up. I didn't waist the weekend. I did a bunch of truck maintenance. It doesn't matter the order that we do things. It all needs to get done

  13. The cold and wind is crazy. -10 air temp. -45 with the wind chill. It gets cool in the shop so I brought a few things into the house to work on. When those things were finished I turned my attention to my 1946 Rock-ola jukebox. It needed some servicing. I have neglected it being so busy racing. A record tray broke so a lot needed to come apart to fix it. I will pick at it all weekend.
Now it's time to relax by the fire and stay warm. Some Red Breast 21 year Irish whiskey is perfect on a night like tonight. If you know you know PXL_20260124_014755835.jpg PXL_20260124_014803712.MP.jpg PXL_20260124_015016887.MP.jpg

  15. PXL_20260126_104937526.jpg Still cold so I'm still working on the 1946 1422 Rock olla. It's getting there. When a record is selected the sides light up. There's color wheels that turn along with color wheels in the center that turn. It was a 78 record machine. I converted it to play 45s. PXL_20260118_185607775.jpg

I think some of the Rock-Olas looked better than the more popular Whurlitzer.

  17. I like them both. The cl***ic jukebox era lasted from 1939-1949. After 49 they started to look like cigarettes machines. They did have the ability to play 250 records as time went on. It always amazes me how one of the old wooden boxes can complely fill a room with sound. I bought mine thirty years ago when they were somewhat affordable. It didn't look like this when I got it. It took a lot of work.

  18. PXL_20260130_175037654.jpg PXL_20260130_200230094.jpg The not so fun part of racing. Trailer maintenance. You can't win races if you can't get to the race. Today's fun brakes and bearings. In today's throw away society can you believe it's cheaper to throw away the complete ***embly compared to rebuilding. The new part cost 73.00 ***embled. If I chose to rebuild the shoes cost 125.00 and the magnet 65.00. I would still need to buy the hardware and clean everything. I chose to turn all six drums for a complete job. The bearings were re packed. Using two jacks I could take off two wheels. Good thing the parts store is reasonably close. That means three trips to cut drums. 19. Let's talk about the latest in helmet safety. Not helmets are the same quality. For a long time helmets did not keep up with todays increase in speed. Helmets can be custom ordered to your needs. My Impact nitro helmet was do to expire. I went to the PRI show specifically to get fitted for a new one. I brought my head sock to get the right fit. The old helmet is no longer being made. It's too bad I really liked it. I stopped at Simpson. I was fitted to their new nitro helmet. I chose the carbon fiber unit. It's two pounds lighter. Big deal right? Well when you hit something at 200 mph and you head whips around it's a lot less stress on you neck.
New helmet rules are on the way. Pro cars are required to have a air blatter that can be inflated to push the helmet off the head reducing spinal trauma. There's a built in fresh air system that blows fresh air across the visor greatly reducing fogging. There are slots in the foam for those that wear gl***es. The visor snaps into place reducing the chance of it opening during a crash. The interior is nomex. That's a big deal during a fire. The skirt is heavy nomex that tucks into the jacket. A radio port is built in along with a microphone and ear muffs. This beats the individual ear pieces. Extra padding was included to custom hit the helmet to your head. Microphone spacers are part of this. Spacing the microphone to your mouth is very important. Anchors for a hans restraint system are built in. It also has the D-ring for a chin strap. A protective bag is included. I have a appointment with my pin striper Monday. How much did that set you back? I'm sure it is quite expensive, but also worth it for the protection it provides!

Last time I look @ Carbon F helmets
    Where in $750 up .
Not including fire suit ,gloves ,boots shoes ect .
    Fresh air ,
    Custom poured seats to fit.
The average guy it's getting expensive just like the change around the early 80s

Helmets have come a long way since my racing days! In 1970 SCCA required a Snell Foundation spec helmet, Bell was the only manufacturer that met their specs. I thought $175 was terrible given they only wanted the measurement of around your head, across the forehead and just over the ears to fit it. Then it dawned on me that I did indeed have a head worth more!

I will say Not true , $10 helmet Quality
    Verse 1k one .
I do not write well or explain good .
Back in what 20s-30s not say a leather skull helmet was safe they thought so , but any modern helmet since the 80's better then leather
    or jockey .
My self more paranoid to be in plain then race car .
I said this before , Why on any water craft all must have a Life preserver
But all flights in a day No one has parachute on plain out side of Fighters ect. Fallen 1,000 or plus feet 99 % death
    Verse water ?
I just wonder if some Including me think / have a false thinking of security
of having certain things thinking you safe when life / surviving just a chance.
Lets just talk about strapping in ,
Its a chance some where deep in thoughts know is Death Reaper present this time ? Thought there deep in your brain maybe 1%, but your focused on
Other things in whats going on @ time .
Not busing on New Helmet , I just like to know if $$ driven , Lawer's , SFI or really about safety , Common sense tells me New helmet safer but I know No guarantee ,
I am happy with my 15 year out of date
    One , I think it just ****s rule's ,rules
    Politics .
    I enjoy racing but I not a racer , a
    Street -R @ one time .
Spend many hour's @ track @ tree between staging car's , roam the pits
I know what its like to go over 200 , But me personally do not care if other's see me , I do just for my excitement ,
I am also one that I do not need a race track to do what I want , there places still around Mile long no roads drive way's @ 12 am you can see ,
back around 90's cars that where trailed
4 sec 1/8 some on ramp truck some in box . Pro mods , pro stock, rails ,
    10 miles out p*** suburbs , county .
some these are still around running
in pro cl***es I know 2 that where @ Fla
Before christmas Pro mod race & sure few more ..
Brain I keep a watch on yr post , I lean things I ask ?'s
Maybe some time's Bring up a thought
    @ looking @ something different
Beside's what Hell he posting about ..
Thanks for your post's & keeping it even on Off Topic ,
    @ one time you I bumped head's
You said you where going to do it the old way , car progressed & see things are Diffrent then old ways Parts & setups
