I could tell a story of a big pavement roller the highway dept thought was a good idea to park overnight in the bar parking lot. Those things will start with a screwdriver, who knew?....

  5. Such a great story, and quite believable. It's reminiscent of stories I've heard since my early teens. I remember some years ago I was being interviewed for a newspaper article about why we (the guys that keep showing up for cruise nights) keep on doing this thing with old cars. I started telling a story that really was better left untold in that particular format. I told the reporter I wasn't going to finish that story and we should move on to something else. The article ended up great without that story, but a milder one in it's place. A friend of mine says most of the car show lookers would sell their souls to be the guy driving away in one of those special vehicles at the end of the show; the stories we tell certainly helps enhance those feelings, and, we all have those stories to tell. Our stories might not be as good as Ryan's but they all have a hint of rebellion and hooliganism in them.

I recall this day, running into each other and the spilled beer. It's great to finally hear the rest of the story, especially since you've mentioned it being quite the day before.

On a separate note (I feel like a Debbie Downer even mentioning this) -- Isn't the Wally Parks' roadster a re-creation of his old Hot Rod? I've seen it at the NHRA Museum and seem to recall the story of him selling the car when he was younger and it disappeared.

"Somehow he and his crew had commandeered the security guard’s golf cart."

    I can feel this sentence.

  15. Ryan, you are my hero. At 85 years old, I am not the old man sitting in the recliner chair with a scowl on my face. I am leaning back in my chair with a smile on my face remembering the days gone by. About 10 years ago my youngest son checked my driver's license record for a CDL job that he wanted me to do for him. He said, "dad, your license is clean. " He couldn't believe it knowing of some of my antics in my younger days. I told him, "do what you want, but don't get caught."

I totally remember that… one of those little humiliations you live over again every time you remember it. Sorry man.

And yeah… there was something like that with the car. I don’t really remember the details.

I don’t think we ever talked about it afterwards. Dude stole a golf cart, got caught, and faced zero consequences. How?

Ryan some suggested reading and viewing

    Reno 911 bicycle and car
Somehow guys that respect cars and hate thieves see a golf cart, especially one ***ociated with 'the law'
    and the gangsta reigns.

Ryan, I thought this story was going in a different direction. After reading it my youth came flashing back at me. Now you did not say how old you were. When I was 16 or so and I lived in Connecticut. Not that far from NY boarder. In New York you could drink at 18. I looked all of 18, so I never got carded.
My friend Dennis and I went to Port Chester's Square Tavern and drank enough beer to render us stupid. I drove back to our home town (Stamford). I should not have been driving. But I'm a kid.
Now it's snowing and everything is covered and Dennis and I are looking for something fun to do. I come up with the idea to go sleigh riding. Problem (no sled) as we drive by ***mings parks big hill that everyone uses for sleigh riding. I say to Dennis let's go sleigh riding. It's 1:30am so no one on the hill. Dennis responds "no sled" I respond "no problem " and proceed to drive my 52 four door Buick up the incline on the side towards the top.
We almost reached the top when the Buick started sliding sideways down the hill. Now Dennis has been launched off the seat and is between me and the steering wheel. We are laughing so hard at this point that we hardly felt the wheels coming off the ground. This happened several times before we stopped at the bottom. How the car did not go completely over is a miracle . Could only be explained that the heft of the Buick saved us.
So I was 16 , how old were you?

    Great story.

Reminds me of one of Werner Herzog's rules of filmmaking - "Carry bolt cutters everywhere."

I have to question anyone who thought this was something I only did in my youth. Rebellion is mostly wasted on the young. They are loud, obvious, and convinced they are immortal. When you get older, you can get away with far more. Not just because you have picked up a little wisdom along the way, but because you have learned how to move quietly. You blend in. You know when to push and when to disappear.

Do not let age sand you down into something safe and predictable, fellas. That is how they really get you. Get out there. Make a little noise. Get into the right kind of trouble. You’ll be glad ya did… sometimes…

A few years ago I had a few grandkids with me as I went through the car wash. They were talking/arguing about my truck is it fast or an old man truck….
As I pulled out of the bay I lit it up for a little smoke show. The kids ate it up!!
Fast forward a few years the oldest grand daughter is with me running errands. Since that time I got a new OT truck lots more HP. We were just reminiscing about the smoke show as I pulled up to the stop sign and noticed the PoPo had a car pulled over, the officer was at the drivers window. I looked at Jaydin - she knew - No grandpa No well I just couldn’t help myself. Not a smoke show but we left some of my expensive rubber on the road. Yep gotta raise a little hell once in a while.
