Technical Olds 394 differences

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Feb 3, 2026 at 9:07 PM.

  1. I'm looking at a 59/60 olds 394 right now that's had a rebuild. I've been planning on rebuilding a 63/4 olds 394 that I have, and have been buying vintage speed and dress up stuff for the late 394 (bought stuff from members here). It seemed to me there was a difference in bolt on stuff between the 2 engines but I can't remember. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 2, obviously timing cover/water pump and engine mount for the front. But I'm hoping I can use the following: adjustable rocker arm ***emblies, solid lifters, camshaft, valley cover, valve covers, bellhousing adapter, intake manifold, distributor, and flywheel (mine are all late 394). Any help appreciated.

The '61-'64 cylinder heads had a different exhaust manifold/header bolt pattern, and they went to an aluminum front cover in '63. Aside from that, the parts you listed should all interchange.

yes, like Heathen says, all the parts you listed will fit.

  4. Thanks guys! It dawned on me after a bit that the exhaust manifold flange was different, and that's fine as I'll have to build headers anyways. The biggest concern I had was the rocker ***emblies, and camshaft...just couldn't remember, and as you know, finding vintage speed stuff for them ain't the easiest. Thx again!
