Also fixed my axle clearance problem on the left side by cutting the weld and sliding the tube back about an inch or so. I verified that it still has an inch or so of engagement in the muffler as well. I suppose if it leaks, I’ll just weld it solid. Pretty easy solution to the clearance problem.

Right side is done too! Quitting for the night, but I think all I lack on exhaust now is the washers on the manifold bolts. It’s all back together solid and clearance everywhere otherwise. Not sure I like how the exhaust exits, but I can fix that later. It is at least even side to side. :D

87 and up did not use end gaskets on the intake manifolds. They were silicone only. And sealed great. Unlike silicone valve cover gaskets.

  4. Funny how a comment/post brings back a memory from the past!

Dad worked at the GMC dealership back then & he was so pissed when they started using silicone for valve covers & oil pans first & then even intakes. On a positive note.....I NEVER had to buy silicone for probably the 1st 20 years of my "car life". It was GM's policy to give a tube to each mechanic along with all needed parts for each job, some guys would use a little on that job & throw the rest away...Not Dad, he would use one tube for 4 or 5 jobs & bring the other tubes home! I have always teased him about doing the job right & slow VS flat rate & fast, but because he taught me the right way I rarely have any issues when putting an engine together.

At our place parts kept the tube of silicone until you ran out. But some still made it home. The type A clear was the best for intakes until the improved black came out. But for valve covers I always went back to gaskets. Rechecks ****ed and I avoided them at all cost.

Since we are on this topic and I did notice that the new gaskets didn't come with the end pieces (that I also have never used even on the earlier SBC's or BBC's), should I be concerned that I see they used some silicone on the head surfaces? I'm really not excited about going backwards if I'm just overthinking this...

Never saw anyone use silicone on head gaskets just in the corners. If it was me I would run it then if there was a problem I’d worry about it. But I’m silly like that.

Yep, I’m the same way as I have also never seen anyone use anything on the head surface. I’ll look it over closer before I start tearing things apart. Thanks

  9. Me personally,

I ALWAYS use the end seals, I put a dab of silicone on each of the 4 corners, put the end seals in
& then just a touch more silicone in each corner where the intake gasket sits in the end seals. I know plenty of guys who don't use end seals, but again...Dad was a stickler when i was growing up.

Depending on the surface condition I.E. smoothness of the water p***age areas of the heads & manifold, I may use my finger to smear a VERY thin layer of silicone around each water p***age.

Interesting. I do the same around the water p***ages based on the same criteria. I was just taught not to use end gaskets on my first engine rebuild and have had good luck ever since.

Jeff, you got to do what gives you the warm and fuzzies. Just don’t let mission creep derail your goal.

I tend to not use the china wall gaskets, BUT I usually do a dry fit first and see what kind of gap there is.
It's easy to tell if they are going to squirm out under pressure or the gap is really tall. That may affect going straight RTV or using the gaskets. I do like the rubber(?) ones with the tabs more than the cork ones.
You can spot where to align the bolts before ***embly, too.

No progress last night since my wife was off work. And, I may have stalled this project at least a tad bit since I am going to check out some Model A's tomorrow... This really is a sickness.

LOL! Probably not what you think...just spending time with her when she isn't working. :) With her working evenings and me starting early every day, there are sometimes a few days that we don't even see each other.

    Sickness, no way. .... maybe...

I think there may be 7 Model A’s and parts. Ones that I have pics of are a phaeton, a Vicky, a Tudor and a pickup cab. They are all 30/31’s other than the phaeton…I think. More info coming tomorrow if I decide to buy it all. It’s one of those deals where some property was sold and these all need to go. They are in barns.

You all will be a**** the first to know. Everyone can start pestering me after 11:00 central time tomorrow. They are only about 30 minutes from me and I am taking a trailer to maybe load at least one of them tomorrow if they are what they appear in bad pictures. I figure my 4 year old grandson needs an adventure chasing old cars.

I think I just answered my “should I pull the intake” question…. Sticking something in that gap, they might have been lucky to get half the depth of the gap filled…. And, that is what I can easily get to. Better safe than sorry. o_O

Yea, this is part of why it is taking longer than expected since I am looking closely at how all the work was done. Some stuff better than others, but all suspect…

  25. Definitely a red flag,

Not only the gap, but if my Dad saw a blob that big where the 3 come together on something I built, I would have gotten a swift kick in the ***:p
