It’s been pretty much below freezing for several weeks now. No worries, just bring the work inside.

  3. I see on the TV news that it has been a little chilly over there, whereas it has been a bit warmer here. I am just wondering what you ice and snow people do when the temp goes down below freezing, and you have external water pipes on your houses? Do you leave a tap open while it all freezes so the ice can expand? Is there some sort of expansion chamber to cope with it? I was thinking about this while having a shower, and the water coming out of the "cold" tap was too hot to stay under ! (The only time I have seen ice was in the freezer in cubes.)

The cold states have different building codes to the warm states, everything must be well below the frost line and we'll insulated. My water and sewer line is about 10 ft deep in the ground and no waterline is ran on the outside of the house.
The outside hose connections are of the frost free variety but I still close the water lines that are run to those, I have a ba*****t so all lines are inside.

We have outside water facets on both the east side and the west side of our house, to connect a garden hose to in the summer.
We have a full ba*****t. There are valves in the ba*****t where we can shut off to the outside facets for the winter. After we shut the valve in the ba*****t off, we drain the outside facet.
The frost line in our area usually runs about 3 feet (1 meter) deep, almost all the water and sewer lines in town are well below the frost lines. Occasionally, the city has to fix broken water lines, but usually not too often.

I feel for you folks. It has been pretty nice up here lately in the Great White North. Highs anywhere from 10-18C (roughly 50-64F) and lows near freezing. Keep in mind it could easily be -35 and snowing here next week. Cheers all! IMG_3840.jpeg

My mum grew up in the northern Free State. My grandparents' house followed the local Victorian pattern with the kitchen at the back, and the bathroom tacked onto the back of that, at the opposite end of the house from the bedrooms. It was all solid brick walls; there was a water tank on the bathroom roof, and the water pipes were external. That region gets bitterly cold, dry winters, and the pipes had a sort of rough cloth jacketing against freezing. I remember being unconvinced that they'd help a lot. Pipes did indeed occasionally burst due to freezing.

It's hot here too right now. February is to be struggled through. I've come to talk of the depth of summer and the height of winter. Things will get better after Easter. All that seasonal symbolism works perfectly for me in inverted form.

The frost line by me is 39". I'd say that nobody has exposed outside water, although we have trailer parks around with freeze issues.

We had a prolonged cold snap back around 1989. Me and a couple of other guys made some decent coin doing emergency freeze-up repairs. All word of mouth mainly from people at work.

Everyone here is crabbing about the cold snap, which has been about 12 days so far. Only down to 12F today, the weekend will be single-digits.

The snow has a skim coat of ice on it... I saw a squirrel slide over it yesterday

Born in the South, I don't like winter.

If I ever get my hands on the weather remote I will delete winter and add another spring. HRP

I discovered i have a lot of work on my project that I would prefer to do with my garage doors open…dust/grinding kind of stuff..I prefer not to get ahead on my project so being -28 tonight im not making much progress but according to statistics i have 15 winters remaining to get this project completed.

  25. Nearly twenty inches of ice on the lake, all sorts of vehicles heading out with the ice fishermen. I might go to once they start catching something.

I thought for sure the Long Island Sound would be frozen over but it’s still hanging on.
