Hello everyone. I am a college student at St Edward's University down on south Congress where I'm studying photography. I grew up here in Austin and went to high school with a parking lot full of new tahoes and jeep grand cherokees. Needlesstosay, I decided to step away from my normal surroundings and buy my own first car, a 1964 impala that had been sitting in a farm field for 20 years, when I was 15. Through highschool I worked at the local fullservice gas station to make the means possible for my first project while driving my brother's first vehicle, a 68 lwb chevrolet 396. It ended up being a mostly stock 4dr cruiser, 327, disc brakes, 2.5 pipes dumping at the axle. I learned a lot. Since then I sold the impala to a son and father in SanMarcos and have had a few other projects, some of which you HAMBers would not approve of (hangs head in shame). a beat-up $200 79 ford courier with homemade 6shooter fender badges and an "I love this bike" sticker, a 1963 volkswagen single cab I bought as a driver and sold off three months later, 1960 volkswagen I bought from a junk yard, an 8 week pan off project that I sold to a kid in Chicago. It has since been featured on a few vw websites and is apparently known as the "Java Jalopy." http://www.hoodride.com/nucleus/Projects.php?itemid=1078 Alas, I finally got my hands on another american made project but with my reality starting to set in, with school and work a**** other things, my '49 shoebox project has been put on the market to help support my buding small business, Avenue Bike Company, building handcrafted silver brazed steel bicycle frames in my backyard workshop. In the meantime, I deffinetly have my eye out for a more realistic company vehicle, maybe an old sleeper farm truck (anyone?), while the '49 is still for sale. Anyone interested? I guess I've always been somewhat of a gearhead. I get excited about how **** works, love an old car with lots of character, faded paint, a history, and cringe at the thought of driving a "normal" vehicle. So, until I have the time to wrench on my own project, you can catch me pedaling around central austin on the first bike I built, an unpainted, raw steel track frame. live the simple life, fellas.
Cool. Welcome to the HAMB. I'm also an Austin guy and a VW guy, and there are a number of others on here too that came from the VW scene.
Welcome aboard junior! Man, I love that town!!!! I live about 2 hours from there, and I try to get down to S. Congress as much as possible. My best friend lives up by Lake Line Mall and works for Dell, so I've been trying to move out there, so we can hang out more.
so, even though I dont have the money or the time to work on my car right now and even though I'm in a crunch for cash (this is why it was up for sale), i'm sticking it out. the '49 ford is staying in my driveway and being tucked under the carport for a little while until I can scavenge for some donor parts. see you at the round up
