    Barn Find ... :D ... sort of.
I knew where it was since 1972. My younger brother got this 1966 GTO as his first car ... 35 years ago. He and my Dad got it from the original owner ... making this a two owner 66 GTO. My brother drove it and enjoyed it like any young teenager would with a late model GTO but unlike his older brother ( me ;) ) he did NOT mess with it. He washed it, took care of it and did not race it, cut it up or destroy it.

After a few years, the transmission failed ... and the GTO was parked. It has been off the road ... in storage ever since. My Father passed away recently and we are selling the building it has been in ...and ... today it saw sunlight for the first time in many, many years.

It is ALL Original ... never modified and complete. It will recieve a complete restoration in the near future. Only the 69 Chevelle SS rims are incorrect. They have been on the car for over 30 years. My brother has the original wheels ...

He has waited all these years to have it back on the road ... and it be NICE ... like it was when he got it.

Typical story ... marriage, then family ... work ... all have helped postpone it being restored and enjoyed.

    He deserves it ...
Imagine having your high school car ... 35 years later and restored to great condition.

Damn that's nice, it is also good to know that I wasn't the only one to have a vinyl top on my 66 GTO.

  16. HEY, I recognize that street!!!!!!!!!! It's about a mile from where my mom-in-law lives :) .

Your brother told me about that car at Charlotte. From what I see in the pics, he under-described the car. That's a NICE'UN. As one of my buddies says, "Son, it's the RIGHT KIND!".

Loading it up to take to his place? Or, is it on the way to a shop to be worked on?

Please tell your bro' I said Hi!

  17. If I had my high school transport back, i'd be riding a Cushman Eagle again. Too poor to have street car, but did drive my dads dragster. Damn, i'd love to have that sweet heart. GTO's were the cats meow in their day

One of my high school cars was a 67 chevelle 327 4speed. Yeah, I'd love to find it. Hands down my favorite, EVER. Its the taillights.

my high school ride was a 4 door 74 maverick. no, it wasn't worth keeping.

it's cool that he'll be able to put it on the road again. my cousin has the same 37 chevy coupe he had in high school back in 59. another friend has owned a 50 olds since around that same period. i only wish i had taken better care of the maverick.

Kinda like my kid (who's 42 years old now) I gave him an origional '69 Z-28 for his 16th birthday. Took 2 years to go through it. he drove it to college and when he graduated was going to sell it to buy a new car. "Not on your life" says dad (me). I gave him the down payment for the new car and put the Z-28 in my building where it stayed for 20 years. 2 years ago he came and got it (after repaying the downpayment loan) and is now building it the way he wanted to back in high school but couldn't afford. Sometimes fathers aren't as dumb as thy appear:rolleyes: :D

    :)

    The GTO is a 389 4V ... automatic with PS and A/C ...
    Just a nice, reliable cruiser.

My brother saw all the trouble I had tearing stuff up street racing and all and he wanted to ride ... everyday and look good doing it ... so he left the GTO stock but well detailed and maintained.

I do not have the time to restore it nor the talent. Plus he wants it very nice and correct. he wants it AACA correct. SO ... He is having someone else restore it. It is a little past the wash it up and drive it stage ... and he wants it like it was when he first got it. NICE and shiny. The original owner was a middle age woman who really kept her car up ... so it was like a 1 or 2 year old GTO when he got it ( but it was 6 years old :) ).

The top is faded paint ... the original paint ... not a vinyl top. The paint is just faded ... bad.

I know 1966 GTO's are somewhat O/T ... not traditional ... but I thought most here would enjoy a old GTO story. Most of us greybeards had one or wanted one ...

I bought a '65 GTO in late '65; 6 months old with 6k miles on it for $3500. Dark blue, tri-power, 4-speed. Very nice car, but too expensive for me at the time (payments, gas, insurance) so I put it up for sale after a year for $2900. It took like 9 months to find a buyer!! Obviously I shoulda kept it for another 40 years.
