The original clip from the film back in 1960. Captured at the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2

    Hello,

We followed the Chrisman Brothers race cars since we were first introduced to them at Lion’s Dragstrip during our teenage drag racing adventures. We missed the overall win by Art Chrisman and “The Hustler” in 1959 at the same Bakersfield March Meet #1, so this time, we were not going miss this huge event.

Around 9:00 a.m. in March 1960, the pits at Bakersfield Smokers #2.

We saw a bunch of top So Cal drag racers at their wide open spaces, in the pits and fenced off drag strip. But, as the day wore on, I captured one of the new FED race cars from the Frank Cannon/Art Chrisman Camp.

Now, where did that guy in the white overalls come from? That Cannon/Chrisman team always wore white pants and shirt for working on the cars and to drive the FED. But, going over and over the film, that position is not on the Bakersfield drags film. Yikes!

In looking at the photo in question, the guy in the white pants and shirt is from another race car. It took me watching several Bakersfield race day films that were in my digital files. The Frank Cannon left front wheel was a give away item.

It was a mysterious double exposure overlay that came from out of the blue… I have gone over and over each digital file, and cannot find that Chrisman/Cannon image with the white pants crew. It is just not part of that film. YRMV

But, I did find it on another, almost exact position on the staging lanes from a fuel altered capture. The Juggers Race Team from Bakersfield, happen to be in another time during the afternoon, yet the background spectators seems to be the exact same spot.

The Question” remains, “how did the white pants crew get in the film of the Chrisman/Cannon FED film?” In the original 16mm film reel, they are not in succession at the same place of the recorded films.

Ray Godman with his Tennessee Bo Weevil, he had been shot in the back by a sniper in Korea. A racer before his military time in the Marines, he didn’t let his fate in life slow him down continuing to race and sell performance parts for decades.

    Hello,

My brother and I never met Ray Godman, but our paths would have crossed at the U.S. Nationals in Detroit, had we made it in September of 1960. We had planned on that event being the final goal for our 1940 Willys Coupe, 671 SBC, C/Gas build, but things happen. Back home during recovery from the burns, my brother and I were inspired by the trials and tribulations of Ray Godman.

To this day, that was a low point in my brother’s life, all of the planning, hard work into the wee hours, on our Willys coupe went down the drain in August, 1960. Something as important as hot rodding and drag racing to a teenager, had put a stop to all activities in one single incident…

But, the inspiration in reading about Ray Godman in the Drag News and other articles, helped him overcome his injuries and get on with life. Despite the funny name of “Bo-Weevil,” we liked the image and results from that modified roadster.

This was a “Thank You Tribute” I made for both memories.

The video includes original "sound" from 1959 U.S. Nationals of the "Bo-Weevil."
