Hi all, I recently got my hands on a 62 Falcon Sedan Delivery. It is just a rolling shell, and I am planning on turning it into a g***er. While I’ve worked on my share of cl***ics, I’ve never done a g***er before. I’ve done about as much research as possible but still hung up on the structural side of things. My question to you guys is can I get away with using subframe connectors? I’m currently in highschool, and don’t have the resources to build a full frame for it. It is getting a mild 302, and will mostly be street driven. I plan on using some tubing to link the front subframe to the firewall for support. Would those and the subframe connectors be enough? Thanks in advance
I am sure someone will answer you better than my answer. But back in the late 70’s that is the way most guys on a budget did their cars. I put some in my 65 Chevy II, of course I was running a warmed up 6cyl on the drag strip.
I'm not sure if you've done much searching, but there was a pretty young kid on here a few years back that shoved a 460 in an early Falcon. His thread may be of help to you! Of course a BBF is a little bit different than an SBF in terms of weight and torque... but could answer some questions for ya! I might go look for it and post a link to it. I think I followed his build and it should be pretty easy to find... standby. 3blap.
your choice but that puppy is very rare. 1,568 units In 1962, a total of 437,095 Ford Falcons were manufactured, which included the Falcon Sedan Delivery, with only 1,568 units specifically produced for this model. The Sedan Delivery was known for its rarity and unique design, making it a sought-after vehicle a**** collectors.
Got a little distracted yesterday on my search... and it was way deeper in my followed threads than I thought it would be! https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ryans-falcon-young-guns-straight-axle-build.1083895/ 3blap.
Thanks to everyone for your input. Spent some time going through some other threads on here. I got under the car today, and it seems to be on the deliveries that the subframe is extended all the way back to the rear subframe. And they end right next to one another. I read online that it is for extra floor support. The only issue with this is it makes a lot of the subframe connectors not fit right. I’m trying to figure out how I want to work around it.
I call that a bonus, best thing to do is work with what is there, I wouldn't bother trying to cut up a commercially made subframe connector if that is what you meant by a "work-around", would not be a big project (***uming you have fab experience). I built a a pair of subframe connectors using round tubing to tie in with the custom "back half" subframe I built for my 67 Nova which is also a unibody car. I also tied them in to the roll bar diagonal braces that go through the floor Anything you can do to a unibody car will made a big difference.
Can you post a pictures of your subframes? I haven’t seen any unibody car where the factory front and rear subframes don’t connect. Usually the floorboard area doesn’t have factory sub frame that goes all the way across to the rear.
About 20 yrs. ago, I built a '60 Falcon 2dr. wagon. Like you, I saw that the front subframe extended to the rear rails. I didn't tie it together, and didn't even run round tubing from the firewall to the front rails. For 6 yrs. I drove it on the street, and raced it 5-6 times a yr. on a 1/8th mi strip w/a 500 hp. 351 Cleveland. Never had a problem structurally. Car was a lot of fun, sometimes I wish I still had it! - F F
Here are some pictures of the subframe for those that wanted to see it. IMG_3809 by RustyFlyer posted Feb 14, 2026 at 6:47 PM IMG_3849 by RustyFlyer posted Feb 14, 2026 at 6:46 PM IMG_3812 by RustyFlyer posted Feb 14, 2026 at 6:38 PM
Dear RustyFlyer... that doesn't work. Try again. Being that you're a HS student, I'm figuring you're a ninja with electronics. I don't know what went wrong with uploading pics, but something went wrong. Once you have it figured out, please post more pics... like of the car. That's why we're all here... we want to see car pics. 3blap.
Thanks for letting me know. Not sure what went wrong either, they are showing on my end. I’ll try again and see if I can fix it. When I do I’ll throw in some extra photos.
The pics work. Alec (3blapcam) is just an old man and can't see very well. The early Falcons are very similar to Foxbody Mustangs. The subframe and floor design is almost identical. There are tons of sub 10 second foxbodies out there with just subframe connectors. You'll be fine. In the mid 90s. I was a broke high school kid with a fox Mustang 5.0, we made subframe connectors out of 2"x2"x.125" square tubing. That car wasn't fast by todays standards, but it went high 11s on a little nitrous, and the subframe connectors helped with the launch for sure.
Jeremy, you just time stamped yourself as an old man with the Foxbodies in the 90's quote! Are you going to the Showdown? I'm planning on being there... although my coupe has been running like garbage recently. For the record, @RustyFlyer... the pics are working for me now as well. I'm on my work computer and they were not showing up the other day. Where's the middle finger emoticon for Jeremy? 3blap.
The good with those early Falcons is that most ch***is mods that work on Early Mustangs work on the Falcons pretty well. For me, a good 302, transmission of choice and V8 rear end would make a pretty strong runner that was a lot of fun.
Alec, yeah but the 90's were pretty awesome, haha. I plan to run to the Showdown for a bit if I have time, but we're racing (a foxbody) at a no prep event at Little River that weekend so it may be a bit of a stretch.
Rusty, I figure you will be updating the brakes and I would like to have what you remove for a project, all 4 corners. I ask location because I may have stuff you can use if shipping would not make it expensive in exchange for the brakes; not really race stuff but items like wheels and tires to get the car running, steering box, column, brake stuff, several clutch and pressure plates unless you have a Summit charge card..
Ended up finding a solid pair of connectors that will work for me from Summit. Should get here sometime in the next week. I also have my front suspension/axle coming in the mail. Next couple days will be prepping to install everything. I’ll keep you guys updated. (Hopefully the pic works this time lol) IMG_3341 by RustyFlyer posted Feb 18, 2026 at 9:52 PM
Heck yeah dude! That's sweet! I personally wouldn't straight axle it, but it's not my car! That'll be cool! 3blap.
That will be pretty cool, not a lot of them around anymore, a little cleanup but not too much, that would kill the soul of the car, should get a lot of attention at the dragstrip. There was a 64 or 65 here, the guy owned a Falcon business and it was restored, last I heard it went to Australia.
I HAD a 64 'Foulcar' Sprint BITD....now a 66 (M-word) ! When building your front suspension look into roller spring perches . They really let the suspension work! WAY BETTER than the rubber bushings that are stock. Not only do the rollers let the front end rise on acceleration it also rides and handles better with a 1" sway bar and one piece export brace and Monte Carlo bar. What transmission and rear gear are you using ? 6sally6
this is one of the Epic (Not in the Gen X way - but truely) Falcon G***er builds on here https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...er-1962-falcon-futura-with-a-nailhead.427930/
