Technical What are you working on?

  1. Took advantage of another nice day to re-***emble the hotrod and started it up to see if the trans still leaks.
    It does. Damn!
Oh, and also the engine drain plug continues to leak even after I bought a new drain plug. The black plastic washer that was supposed to seal and prevent the new plug from leaking broke when I tightened it. I'll solve that by finding a nylon or hard rubber washer. I did replace the O-rings on the Holley's transfer tube. That no longer leaks but the accelerator pump does leak now.
I'm most of the way through dis***embly again and should have it out by later this week. I'll check the torque on the pump bolts one more time, inspect the new seal, the torque converter and the transmission case itself looking for cracks that I may have overlooked. If I can't find the obvious, I'll take it to a transmission shop I trust and let them have at it. I was thinking there should be some way of pressurizing the transmission to see where the leaking is coming from but I don't know how to do that. I might try to cobble up something to pressurize the torque converter as I saw an example of that sometime in the last few months on the HAMB. That will help determine if there's a crack or leak in the converter.

Okie Pete, porkshop and Sharpone like this.
  2. Find an Aluminum one, it won't split. JW

Working on door panel inserts this evening. In the morning I can wrap the inner panels and set them aside until I attach them to the “engine turned” insert panels. IMG_0207.jpeg IMG_0212.jpeg

I got the inserts wrapped and the door cards foamed. Once the door cards are covered with white vinyl the molding and inserts will be installed for the last time…

Agreed. Looks good as-is. You can always add the pleated panels in later. Good looking work.
What chtome/stainless edging did you use for the turned panels?

The molding is from an early Mustang “Pony” interior, although they go the opposite direction on a Mustang.

One more vote for leaving the green panels off. Looks good as is and I believe that the green will detract from it.

Finally got started work on the Damaged front end on the Ranch Wagon, I have managed to find and replace most of the damaged parts, my pal Dave is once again involved in the reserection of the Wagon, the damaged sheet metal; has been taken off a long with the splash apron, the bumper and ***orted pieces.

The radiator was removed last year and a new core installed, the sheet metal is at the sandblasters and just a few pieces remain to be removed. HRP

    The damage.

Final prep to drop the cab this week. Unfortunately there is issues with how the rear end was placed showing up after removing the bed (not centered, pinion pointing down). More rework. Go figure. IMG_5363.jpeg IMG_5364.jpeg

Not a car but definitely auto related. Since I have a climate controlled garage I don’t like raising the door to run a vehicle in it, plus the fumes always come back into the thing and g***es me out so I installed a port for a hose to vent the fumes out. Honestly I think everyone should have one of these just because and it’s not all that pricey. The hose, adapter for the tailpipe, and the port were around $400. They do have the adapters for dual exhaust and they come in different sizes to accommodate whatever size exhaust you’re running.

No sooner than the neighbor tow truck driver Ray and I place the cab on the frame. Carina goes and pulls a Tim Allen on me. IMG_5374.jpeg Now Carina’s picture withheld for good reason’s, but the crime scene remained. IMG_5373.jpeg IMG_5372.jpeg

  21. I stopped the AOD from leaking on my '29AA. Saltflats reminded me to check the transmission pump bolts inside the bell housing. Sure enough, two bolts were not torqued down tight enough to keep the high-pressure trans fluid from seeping. He nailed it! Now to adjust the TV cable and take it for a first drive.
I'm about to turn 77 and getting up and down, up and down, crawling under the truck to re-install the transmission, hook up the driveline, re-attach exhaust pipes and wires, etc. is grueling. Why do I still do this? I think it's because I want to finish what I started nearly 52 years ago. Will it be a showstopper? Hahahahaha, hell no. It will run, stop, steer, change gears and maybe carry a load in a bed I have yet to fabricate.
What comes next? Seat belts, gl***, finish the exhaust, the roof, upholstery, fabricate a fan shroud, little things like a strong spring to hold the brake pedal in the off position, front turn signal lights and a bumper.

Good to hear you got the leaks fixed and can move forward. I have a buddy that has some years in his build but not near as long as you. I see his pain and determination many times. Reminds me I need to revisit that project to boost it along.

I spent several hours dismantling the bench seat for my truck. Had I known that GM molded the springs inside of the foam I probably would’ve gone a different route. The seat bottom is twisted 3 - 4 inches so I’ll have to figure that out, but it’s square and the springs are in good shape. After sweeping up the big chunks I had to blow out the shop with a leaf blower, what a mess…
