Hot Rods I would like a paint opinion on my Willys coupe

I would stick with the white but I am a little biased.

 

Here's the colors I would consider, in order:
- black
- red
- gold
- Olds green

And that list would be a different order if the car was some other color.

That's my opinion and it's worth what you paid!

 

Lots of good opinions here for the show car look. You want a hot rod look, maybe not, then red oxide primer with whatever turns your crank on the motor, nasty grease is nice. Drink beer while sitting on the fender, or nice wine while polishing same.

 

Since color is a subjective decision, I usually just suggest choosing either a complimentary or contrasting color from a color wheel such as this, customizing to your liking. You are the one who has to like it but since you asked for our opinions, I would go with a copper/bronze variation.

Since it's a strip-down farmers' kids' '60's-era car(& not a showy-type), I'd go w/the Olds green(I like grn/ylw combos), then white or black. Since most of the kids wouldn't spend extra funds needlessly(read: not speed-parts)(white was common then, & either wht or blk could've been found on that barn shelf w/that yellow). Either my computer monitor color-reproduction is lousy, or my eyesight color-recognition is going away, but that yellow looks awful close to orange to me. Anyways, I'd p*** it off as some old Minneapolis Moline Harvest Gold color(or somesuch) found on the barn shelves... . & the Olds green was still ok as from the factory paint...
I did notice that the Cragar h2o crossover, manifold, valley cover, rocker boxes, & maybe the dist body(?) have been polished in the past. I'd redo those since it'd only cost the farmboy time-n-effort. Plus, farmboys don't mind a bit 'o shine... .

Dangit Oswald, you're making me jealous! In my opinion Ford Red or chevy Orange go with anything, but either Black or Olds Green would work nicely.

 

I like my Olds Gold.

 

With yellow (looks like Wheatland Yellow) and black ch***is, Orange or red seems to make the most sense. As cool as the OG green is, yellow & green is a ****ty combination. And that's coming from a Packers fan. Maybe Ford Gray, if the red/orange doesn't float your boat. Look at it this way: would you paint green (blue, gold, etc.) stripes on that yellow body? I wouldn't.

I'd say, black engine (no care/hides the oil leaks) with the valve covers, intake and carbs (rebuilt) bolted on just how they are, mismatched air cleaners and all. Same as the metal shop crafted crowbar from rebar in post #1, I see it as a form follows function, purpose built car. Primary goal: go fast!

 

I usually don’t care for yellow but that shade is sweet. A soft gray is what you need.

A nice heavy metallic purple!!!!

 

Cast iron gray block and head's, Olds Green for the oil pan and valvecover's, ditch the aluminum valvecover's for factory one's, Natural aluminum for the intake and any other cast aluminum parts. JMHO

 

We All like pictures, right?! Maybe one of out photoshoppers can use this and try different colors, valvecovers, etc.

 

The old hot rod engine you're sharing with us is white. I'm still waiting for the rebuilt control set for my legit "Peabody Wayback Machine" or I'd go back and interview whomever had their hands on that thing. What made em paint it white?

Ok, semi-seriously, of course that ol lump of Olds is white. The show car circuits were full of kool colors on engines, and in fact many were chosen to splash that element on its own. Sure, a gold engine looks stunning in any color car. Hang some jewelry on it, oh boy, your submarine starts to surface But this is a race car. Why white? 1st it's different (a little) and makes a brief statement of style when surrounded by speed parts. 2nd, too easy to trace that leak at night with one of those old tin flashlights that's barely brighter than a candle on a cupcake. Ease of maintenance. Maybe you're in the pits and it's already dark, you're in the semi-finals, that white engine made that leak easier to find. Show of hands, does that make sense?
Blue race car, was getting a fresh 440 Mopar. I'd suggested bright yellow vs another Mopar orange. He thought I'd lost my mind. That big bastid looked kool af all dressed in chrome and aluminum on a bright yellow block. Made a statement of its own, the blue/black stripe and black interior wasn't offended in the least.

I'd paint it white...again.

 

I’m confounded why anyone would want to replace those unique valve covers.

 

I could see it gray, like the 50's GMC engines

I did forget to mention; that generally, white would be my last choice of the three. Mostly because in that time period, iffen the mill was white, so was the whole damn underch***is, firewall & 'rails. A look *I* do *not* like or appreciate. It was kinda a "Show" look, or at least a "look at me" on the street look, neither of which I ever learned to like. White upholstery or paint(esp w/freak-paint over the white - YES!). However, since the ch***is is already black, & it sounds like important runnin' gear will be Magnesium, aluminum, & black, that mill(only) just might work done in white - esp iffen it's left in the worked-over-effect it now has. I know it looks scuzzy, but hey, that's life in the old-lane unaltered... . Otherwise, Olds green, black then white.
