Sorry to hear about the theft of some of your tools. I hate thieves. I rarely loan out any tools as my experience has taught me that people that borrow stuff are too cheap to purchase tools so they have no understanding of the value. I write down name, date and the tool IF I do loan something out. A few years ago I lost a $ 400 item, and he cannot understand why I do not talk with him, when he calls, I tell him, send a check, he states never borrowed it. ***Hat he is.
Well on to plan d. Topped off fluids fired up a couple times until gas got to carb. Was getting some back firing in the exhaust when I reved it up a little. Shut down checked firing order, grounds etc. Fired up again #1 cylinder is cooler than the rest, however sounds real good at idle. Pulled plug, black and somewhat sooty. Throttle response is crisp. Maybe a bad condenser or coil? Fired up again revved up to 4 k? Heard a squeal at the water pump belt and kabloeey blew the lower radiator hose off. He he ha ha nice mess. I’m thinking the radiator is plugged. My son installed the makeshift hose said he had everything tight etc. Felt around on radiator the whole thing was cool to the touch, but the engine was warm. I’ll wait for a little warmer weather and fill with distilled water run and flush a few times? Try @squirrel s sock trick. Maybe buy a new radiator. Dan

This might be the culprit. Hard to tell from the pic, but seems hose/elbow alignment is off. If so, will be difficult to keep a clamp on tight, especially if there are no hose beads on that elbow. I’ve seen vids of folks who mod a pair of vice grips to create a crude hose bead.
Always use a bead.... If you put the sock in the top hose at the radiator, it might end up in the radiator tank so full that you can't get it out easily. Maybe put it around the thermostat housing, then put the hose over it, see how that works. Pull the hose out to clean/replace the sock.
Dan, if the lower hose blew off, the rad ain't plugged. Flow is t'stat, upper hose, radiator, lower hose, water pump. That 90 isn't great flowing but as Jim said, always have a rib for the clamp to **** against.
I thought about the rib and thought 13 psi cap maybe 20 - 40 lbs total force good to go WRONG dummy me. I’ll add a rib and try again. Dan
Are you sure fluid is going through the thermostat? Mine wasn't working. First clue was glowing headers and cool radiator. I yanked out the thermostat and dialed in the 10-degree advance. Solved pretty much everything.
MANY years, I always enjoyed the garage fun, now old, with the age/health BS that most everyone deals with. (D--it, how did that happen so fast) the fun part has just become work for me. I'm still Putzin but I'm definitely in a slump, more talking than doing, just keeping up with everything has become a project. We are considering some different solutions, time will tell. The spine/pain DR. has provided me a temporary solution for my back problem. Yes your thread is good, makes sense, enjoying, following along, just the normal "stuff", you'll figure it out. No disrespect intended, My suggestion is, consider buying a new radiator, I used Walker, believe no longer available. a good aluminum radiator, not the cheap china version, though I've read they work. I respect what you're doing, I'm not building anything now. My life's experiences have taught me, use the best parts available, eliminate problems down the road. I had my HAMB cars and any car I now own, I could/can get in and drive to California if desired. Am I going to do that or did I, No. That's the best part of our hobby, you get to do it your way. Hope your back gets better. I understand the aging thing as I get older I don’t do some things that I used to do skiing etc. not fun anymore due to aches and pains it causes. One thing I appreciate from the crowd that has been there done that is the knowledge and wisdom you guys have and share. I’m open to input/ideas etc. it’s how I learn. Thanks Dan

Half the problem anymore is starting point when you actually get off your *** and get down to work on your car. I don’t look forward to the pain that I know is heading my direction when working on my junk.

Indeed! Having a weld bb burning the hair in your ear is an experience not easily forgotten, the feeling you get as it p***es over the ear lobe on the way out, is actually the best part of that experience. Those weld bbs can manage to get anywhere really fast, and they seldom bring a pleasant experience! You don't even have to be laying on your back...
Been busy the last two weeks, hauling guys to construction jobs, getting 4 or 5 loads of fire wood. Will get in garage tomorrow make beads on pipe and try again. Also double check ignition. Supposed to snow again tomorrow getting tired of winter. Dan

Half of the firewood I had delivered in the fall is still under a tarp covered by a foot of snow. lol! Kiddos were supposed to help cord it. Still have wood though to burn as I age it a whole year under my deck. Had a dusting overnight and into this morning. Another month or so to go before spring.
I’ve always liked the sound of gl*** pack header mufflers, back when I was a kid we would space them out from the collectors, like loud wasn’t loud enough. I’m using 3” gl*** pack header mufflers on the Fairlane, the 289 is rowdy enough to sound good and loud with only turndowns after the muffler. Just like in high school. The 292 actually made more power with the dyno mufflers installed so I’m hoping the 3 inches will do the same thing. Back in the seventies I used Thrush gl*** packs and a buddy of mine had me try the shut the engine off and decelerate in gear and then turn the ignition back on. Now if you did it right you would have a large fire ball under the car with the huge BANG, well with the Thrush muffler you know when you go to far with the engine off and coast in gear because you would blow the case off your mufflers, but the bang and fireball was just too cool! I’m looking forward to the Fairlane… Your never too old for a happy childhood….
Fun stuff I had Purple Hornies on my FE 390 headers. Loud is right !!! I never shut engine off coasted and turned ignition back on but had a friend who was forever doing it He bought a few mufflers. Dan
I never had a set of Purple Hornies but I had a friend who had them on his Nova, great sound and the look was cool…
