Maybe the early 289 heads? They later stepped up to 63cc chambers compared to the 55cc of the 260.
As you say port changes and valve size changes also with 289 heads.
Alot of different part no's for 289 heads would indicate differences.

Yes, 63cc open chamber head was developed for '68 302, went on the '68 289 engines. I had a '68 289 years ago that had a 302 block, 289 rotating ***embly from the factory being a transition year. The pre-'67 conventional rocker 289 heads are the good ones.

I installed a stock 260 in my 1962 Falcon wagon and painted it to look stock, like maybe it was swapped out in '62 or '63. According to Bob Mannel, the late 1964 260, C4OE heads had the same 1.67" intake/1.45" exhaust valves as the 289 heads. I have a rebuilt set of the C4OE heads on the bench ready to be bolted on. I also have the C4SA-9421 aluminum intake previously mentioned, painted black for the stealth/stock look. I am going to install an Autolite 4100 1.08 C4GF-AF, which is from a 64 1/2 Mustang, with the stock air cleaner housing that has extra clearances for the 4v.

    Sounds like a good plan.

All dressed up and nowhere to go.... I bought htis 260/4-spd combo out of the S.F. Bay area a couple years back... It was in a '64 Caliente conv that was undergoing a high dollar restoration when the owner p***ed. The son decided the little conv needed more power, so this mil never made it into the car. That's when I bought it. Still don't have a place for it. If someone is in need, PM me...... The distributor is simply filling the hole...... Merc 260-T10.jpg

That's pretty nice... the narrow bolt pattern trans is pretty scarce, only made for '63 and '64 model years IIRC, and the left exhaust manifold is special to the early Comet / Falcon to clear the steering gear.
