If you look closely at the tail lights that @jnaki depicted in his drawings of the Olds coupe, you will see the number 88, which is correct as it pertains to Rocket 88.
As you can see on my photos, the tail lights are the same!

1963 Buick Riviera purchased in the fall of 1962.

I was once a teenager who had access to a discount purchase on any speed equipment or parts. It wasn’t as large as some established speed shops, but big enough that some of my friends used me to get them parts for a discount. We did not have an actual building speed shop, but a backyard garage where we started our engine building and hot rod/drag race work.

We were able to get our own speed parts at a discount, which was good for the teenage bank accounts. It was my brother’s idea to start a small speed shop that built engines and sold parts along the way. For us, no shiny parts were lined up on the wall. It was a working garage and storage for our Willys Coupe build. When friends came over, the workshop took on the mini-speed shop arena and it was fun talking about parts ordering/ sales. Perhaps, we did have a future going on for our new adventure…

So, after our drag race involvement for 4 years of every Saturday at the local Lion’s Dragstrip, now, I had the ability to continue our speed shop. We got parts for every one, made a little spending money and had customers building their own hot rods. Or, I helped, if the friend was not the most handy of mechanics.

One friend’s older brother had just bought a 1963 Buick Riviera (owned a large construction company) and wanted to get some 5 spoke mag wheels. At the time the best place to get a good discount for us was Moon Equipment. They gave me a super discount on 4 American Racing Equipment 5 Spoke Mags for the Riviera.

NOTE:

One of the reasons that I bought the set of 5 spoke mags was that the older brother had an old balsa wooden surfboard with a rare sticker on it. I tried riding it and it was a little shaky, but it had some value then. It was shaped in the South Bay of Los Angeles in the late 50s.

The older brother no longer wanted the balsa wooden surfboard and now, I wanted a custom station wagon to carry the surfboard back to my back yard garage. It did fit inside of the 58 Impala with the backseat taken out. Now, I cleaned it up and stuck it in our teenage “study den,” until it took up too much room. But, now, we owned a rare wooden balsa wood surfboard.

Those days are still around when we visit my brother’s house and see the pristine balsa wooden surfboard hanging on a wall, facing the ocean. But, what about the 63 Riviera? It is long gone, but the memory sparked a new artwork for me… My friend and I spent several weekends cruising around in the "new" 63 Riviera with the American Racing 5 spoke wheels. At the time, no one had the 5 spoke wheels on a new 63 Riviera. It just looked fast sitting there in the parking lot of the teenage hangout.

But, old memories creates new ideas as station wagons take precedence as a custom daily driver. The extra space carries tons of "stuff." Suitcases, potted plants, trees, mulch and of course the latest of succulents to ward off the need for watering every day in this warm climate... Even my new/old surfboard would fit inside in its cover for trips to the beach and back.

Now, that is a fancy way to head for the coastal activities then and now… YRMV

Incidentally, this one of central California's premier car shows, on the streets of Old Town Clovis.

You people with talent hurt me. I wanted to be the guy that could do everything. I got left in the dirt right after Egyptian stick men. Thank you everyone for your continued effort. It is really appreciated.

 

This has always been easy for me, ever since my earliest memories. So easy, I couldn't understand why everyone couldn't do it.
But then I tried singing. I guarantee no one wants to hear that. That put it in perspective. I think everyone has at least one thing they are good at.
I've seen your metal work. You have talent my friend.
