So, if you didn’t have hot rods or customs, what would you do?

I have often pondered this. If for some unknown reason I wasn’t allowed to own hot rods or customs, what would I do with my free time?

Everything I do, everyone I know centers around cars and transportation, so that would be a tough thing.

I guess for me, I would probably travel the country in an RV. I am a history buff and I love the National Parks.

Counting my money I saved from my addiction to cars.

  7. I have been involved with autos and motorcycles since I was around 9 years old. In 76 I began a 20 year career in drag racing. I spent lots of time on motorcycles after that. I built a 53 chevy street rod in 2003. My 1st serious hot rod was a 32 built in 2007. Including the 32, I have done 10 projects by the end of 2023. I find myself looking for the next hobby but have no idea what it will be. I 'm old enough now that I'm somewhat limited in choices I can do without a lot of pain. I will be watching this to see what develops. Maybe somebody will have an idea that appeals to me. So my answer after this recollection is 'I don't know". :)

  9. If I just did hotrods, I would be better at it, hotrods are just a part of a well rounded life in my world. But to answer the question, might do some writing or not hotrod based travel, could always spend more time with my wife.

Wait , There's something else besides cars?
Not into golf or sports. Not much on hiking or camping. No boats or planes.
Spending time with the wife..... Unsure she would put up with more of me.
I do like whiskey. Maybe AA meetings are in my future. :p:p:p:p
I would probably die of boredom.

I used to ask myself the same question. I even tried to give it up for a short time. But, I couldn’t come up with anything else I wanted to do…

IMG_0178.jpg 20200613_154108.jpg Boats man! You think cars are a waste of money, you get into boats and you can REALLY shred some cheddar!

Boats and guitars are what I do outside of car stuff. But if I had to replace cars? I dunno... Restore riding mowers or something... Tractors? Maybe learn to fly an airplane...

I can see that. If you really wanna dump some cash, get into airplanes. I just finished a 40 year career in those.

Was really into off-roading before I got interested in traditional hot rodding. Still have my 97 Lexus LX450 tripled locked beast. Got an IH Traveler in 2020. Started a frame off restoration. Swapped in a 5.3/4L80E, but sold it after two yrs as I just didn’t have the time. Way back before that I had two early Ford Broncos 73 & 74. Sold one for parts, then sold the other to a guy who was going to restore it. I should have kept that one. Also did a lot of home renos during that time. Got an electric guitar last year, started off good with practicing, but that has fallen off as I’m really pushing to finishing up my speedster build.

I don’t do anything with sticks and balls, if it doesn’t have wheels I’m not interested. Without modified cars I would resort to my microcars and motorcycles.

Life without cars????? I don't know how to do anything else, my entire world was built around cars, from a very early age.
Maybe I could be a fictional writer, or an artist (probably starving at both). I was OK at both of those things going through high school, I had teachers on both subjects that encouraged me to pursue each venue. I also have a pretty high mechanical ap***ude, I understand how mechanical things function very well. I worked in factory maintenance for many years, old machines without any repair books available. I could stand and watch a machine run, then correctly trouble shoot why it wasn't running correctly.

Maybe I should pursue some of these things, now that I am retired...

I know you have some cool boats, but my boat just sits in the garage and frustrates me…lol I sometimes wonder how I actually have time for cars though. My wife keeps me busy with her hobbies of keeping birds and bees. We have spent two weekends so far this year at beekeeper conferences.

even my non-car hobby of mentoring a robotics team seems to involve machines with 4 wheels that move around!

But the underwater robots we make for our family team The Typewriter Repairmen, don't have wheels. They still have motors and move around.

Depends what you call a bunch... By most peoples standards, I have probably been stung a bunch. But, not like I get stung too often.

I'd probably go back to fishing, certainly not golf. At least that would involve a boat, most likely another b*** boat.

Buildings. I don't know if I'd have any better success getting a building built than a car.

The modern automobile has become a hateful thing to me: I do not wish to own one. I don't even want to ride in one, for someone to give me a lift in one! I don't want to see one if I go out my front door. If I couldn't have the kind of car I want I should prefer to walk; and therefore I should devote my energies to building a kind of urban environment in which I can walk wherever I need to be.

That would also be a fun hobby, yeah. I had a buddy who did that. Mostly ferrier work. It was pretty cool to watch.

No cars? Ok, then it’s ***, drugs, and rock and roll. I’m much better off with cars.

I can't answer that question because there is no damned way I could or would ever give up the car hobby...
