Event Coverage Old Cars are Meant to be Driven!

I certainly agree that old cars need to be driven. All of my old cars, since 1963, have been reliable and driven. The three recent cars, since 1995, have all gone on solo trips of 500 plus miles. The problem arises with having all three cars and no where to drive to most days. One car needs a bunch of work due to its idle status for a bunch of years. The other two are drivable, but haven’t been driven enough miles to need a refill in the last two years. At almost 80, I need to p*** all but one on.

 

Very valid points. I am typically not good at having more than one or two going at once and keeping up with them. My 56 needs an engine and transmission, my Chevelle isn’t running since the MSD box seems to have gone out and I have not even started on the Merc yet. But, thankful to have the 51 that has been reliable so far.

First time I had my dad’s woodie out in traffic and the second time in over 17 years it has been out of the garage. Yeah I was nervous…….

 

Jeff the first time we meet was on the way to the StrayKat . The teapot carb was leaking and we hung out at a parts store in Pawhuska. Brenda and I enjoy loading up the 57 with Family or Friends and going somewhere to eat . I drove the 66 KW to Wichita for new wheels and tires . That was a fun trip

 

Yep, that must have been 2011 or 2012 and you had your shovel head. Anyway, after fighting the stupid teapot on that trip, I put the three 94’s on shortly after. Then, after fighting those a while, I ended up with that 57 intake I got from you and a four barrel.

 

Just let me share my thoughts on this, I have a 63 falcon conv, the last 45 years, it's not a show car per say, but I've won many trophy's with it. I drive it whenever I can, but I'm always apprehensive some idiot in a truck or a mini van will come crashing into me. I definitely won't take it to a restaurant for dinner and have some inconsiderate open their doors on my car. So that this kind of limits me to cruise nights, car shows and Sunday drives. I will go to organized car events with fellow car owners, because they respect one another's cars. I've owned a couple of dozen cars in my life and I always tried to drive them as much as I could. I'm now building a 49 Dodge pick up that will have clear coat patina on it, so I won't fret the small stuff. Just my thought on things Thanks

My '39 has been laid up in the garage for repairs and maintenance since Christmas. Bummed me out not being able to drive it every day. Cannot stand modern cars anymore.
Finally got it back on the road this week and it feels damn good!! Hopefully it'll inspire others to drag their heaps outta the garage and lay down some miles.

 

When not on two wheels, which is 75% of the time, I'm rolling these. Nary a break down, both have been all over California.

 

Maiden voyage in this one today.

 

I have to say that I didn’t get to drive any old cars down there. But, my perspective riding in hot rods was the same as driving in the states.

 

Man, I bet that felt good! That car is coming along great!!!

 

I exclusively drive old cars once the snow clears until it snows again, two cars still have bugs on them because they didn’t get washed in time before it snowed.

 

We only put 5,815 miles on the 49 Dodge pickup last year. Usually that number is between 8,000 and about 9,000 miles a year, but that often includes vacation miles that can add up to another 2500 or so miles, our house demanded the vacation money last year. Hope to do better this year.
We have done the WI Hot Rod 100 every year its been on, last your the round trip was 500+ miles.
My Avatar picture is our 48 Plymouth business coupe near the summit of the Rocky Mountain National Park from May 28, 2016. The mountain p*** gets opened every year for Memorial Day weekend, it had only been opened up for 24 hours the day the picture was taken. The car is about 1300 miles from home in that picture. The poor coupe only saw about a 1,000 miles last year.

I mostly drive my "old stuff" every chance I get, which is usually to the supermarket or on a parts run. I just get a little nervous when parking in big carparks. It's the *****s who park around you that I worry about. I have had a few chunks of paint taken out, even if I park right over in the dead corner of the car park, by myself. Guaranteed when I come out there is always a couple of cars parked right next to me, with plenty of space all around us!

 

Understood. I have end spots at most of the places I go to try to avoid folks that may throw a door into me. Even driving my stuff regularly, I have been fortunate so far.

 

I'm a Wisconsin guy, now a Northern Wisconsin Guy and really looking forward to Spring, Summer, I'm hoping to put miles on this season, I really enjoy the cruising. Years ago I had a Highboy Roadster for 8 years , bolt on top, also rode motorcycles for 36 years, so I definitely paid attention to the weather. With the roadster, the top in the motel room or home in garage, my motorcycle, a dresser style bike, I did not like driving either in the rain, you do get caught in it, I did it, No fun, Bad storm, you Did find a place to stop/hide. The comment on melting paint, had a guys wife in the group I hung out with years ago (Losers, Milwaukee area group) and when I left early, She would yell out to me, there goes the car with the water color paint, funny I guess, after several years I asked her if she ever rode in a car or on a motorcycle in the rain, her reply, NO that would be stupid. I could not/did not argue the point, true statement, But the Freedom of motorcycling and the fun of a Roadster is hard to top when the weather cooperates. Got off the cycle 16 years ago when I retired. A cycle rider is the definition of a defensive driver.

 

Two things you said reminded me of stories with this old stuff. My youngest son had a 75 vette roadster as his daily driver when he was 16. We bought it with no motor and built one for it so he could have something to drive. Anyway, we were at a show once a couple hours away and he wanted to drive around for the weekend with the hardtop off. So, we stored it in the hotel room. Some folks got a kick out of us hauling it down the hauls and up the elevator. As far as riding bikes, our weather has been getting better lately in Oklahoma and I am seeing lots of bikes out. I told my wife I need to look over my later model bike I ride back and forth to work as well as getting my panhead on the road. I'm itching to get back in the wind this year.

 

We don't have the snow or rain but we do have bugs occasionally. This is from last weeks 450 mile trip.
