I have looked all day and can't find a good website to ID motors from their casting numbers... a few charts here and there, but I have a lot of motors to ID and not enough time to chase every individual number down on the internets.....

I do have access to some Hollander and other books, but I was hoping someone knew of a website that has a decent database, it would make my life so much easier....

The reason why is that my boss is clearing out his farm, warehouse, and garages and selling most everything off....

I have mentioned this before, about three months ago, but it's overwhelming.... I spend a few hours a day just ORGANIZING the stuff, (tail lights here, cranks over here, etc, etc) and have finally decided that if I am going to make any headway, I need to get rid of a bunch of motors first, to make room to sort everything else out.... seriously, there are over 400 motors, at least.... and that's just at the warehouse.....

Unfortunately, he did get rid of most of the flathead stuff a few years ago, but there are some older Hemi's and Caddy mills, and quite a few oddballs, as far as engines go.... and alot of 50's/60's Ford and GM stuff....

And as I stated before, anything I consider HAMB-worthy I will post here in the cl***ifieds first, for you all to have first stab at..... there are lots of other goodies as well, but alot of those damned motors have to go first!!!!

So, does anyone know of a good motor ID database/website? Or am I simply dreaming?

Bonus points for Cylinder Head and Crank ID data as well.......

There is one that ought to be promising, but its database is open to paying members only. I forget the address.

I doubt you'll find what you are looking for.

Might help if you spend some time on google images and look at pics of various engines....early olds, cad, hemi, ford, mopar, etc so you can get an idea of the spotting clues for each. for example study the valve cover bolts, intake arrangement, exhaust port arrangement, head bolts visible between valve cover and exhaust manifold, timing cover setup, etc. Each make of engine is pretty distinctive if you pay attention to this stuff.

also if you google the block casting number you might find what it is, this will point you to any make-specific web pages that deal with that number

you need to get a AERA book. you can find older ones on ebay from time to time....or a new one from goodson or other machine shop supplier. they are about 80to 100 bucks each.

AERA stands for automobile engine rebuilders ***ociation.....this is the manual that machine shops look up casting numbers to find specs on cranks/blocks .rods etc......they cover multiple makes...where as web sites are usually devoted to one manufature.

thanks alot!!! The AERA book sounds like what I need..... or at least will get for future referencess.....

I can recognize engines by sight, but when I have 80 or so SBC's and a guy wants a year-specific 327 or 350, well, you can imagine my dilemna.....

My whole point was just to try and see if anyone knew of a database that could help me be more productive in tagging and catalouging all of these mills.....

Using google that way is a great idea, squirrel...... I just tried and the motors came right up!!!!! Year specific and everything!!!!!

Do not under estimate Google!!! I searched on there for hours trying things like "casting number + engine + id" and "crank stamping number id" etc etc this morning....

I just tried typing in "casting 3756519" and it came right up! (58-62 283 cid truck motor)

    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!
