    You are correct!
That was my first time at CHRR, I shot that picture, and endured the noise and the burning of my eyes from the nitro fumes, should have worn hearing protection and a respirator mask!

You know what they say about nitro compared to straight methanol, methanol fumes make you gag and set your nose to running. Nitro makes you gag for a week and then your nose runs for the next week…

And then there’s hydrazine, but we don’t talk about that

Only if there is a back story... Some create many stories and history... just because.

    Hello,

As a teenager coming close to a fuel burning drag race car was exciting. Despite the aroma of fuel in the air and the closer one gets to the loud motor, the fumes are a lot stronger. I am sure I am slightly deaf, according to my wife. It might be since I have stood next to loud exhausts from our own drag race builds and those that we saw at the local, Lion’s Dragstrip.

Teenagers are game for most things and the ability to withstand noise and fumes was a big part of the drag racing game. No, we did not build a fuel burning motor and our 671 SBC motor was loud enough. But, we knew after this part of the game, my brother was already thinking of future drag race cars, Fuel altered roadsters were the closest to being in a full roll bar top fuel ch***is, but at least we would be building a roadster and not the lay back top fuel dragsters.

Front Engine Dragsters in their hey day…

My friend, Jerry Bivens, from my high school graduating cl***, is still in the aspect of front engine dragsters as a presentation display.

The day was punctuated with a fire up of the top Westcoast fuel dragsters all in a row, just steps away from the admiring public. No, no one was wearing ear plugs except the owner and driver. But, the air was full of fumes from the fuel burning during the long “fire-up” a few “rump/rumps” and joining in with the long row of other fuel burning dragsters for the public display.

The fuel dragster was the Biven and Fisher fueler. Jerry bivens was in our graduating cl*** from high school. His partner, Doug Fisher was from the Westside of Long Beach. He went to my junior high school and also went to our high school. He is gone, now, but the memories were evident in the name… “Bivens and Fisher

The final row of fuel burning dragsters was punctuated with the Multi-color showing daylight flames…YRMV

The wonderful history of this prominent top fuel dragster is shown in the post from WDIFL website.

The trials and tribulations of hand s****ping undercoating off the bottom of a Bel Air wagon and the four showers afterwards to get it all back off me. Believe it or not I had safety gl***es and a mask on the whole time. 515016109_10228332996779246_4462756461812314274_n.jpg

Three Northwestern youngsters shared the cost of delivering their dual-purpose street/race cars to far-flung oval-track races by borrowing Ernie Koch’s military-surplus transporter. The eye-popping ensemble is pictured entering Port Angeles, Washington, concluding a 230-mile trek over rough, rural roads for buddies Jack Gillis (#25), **** Miscichowski (#21), Pop Koch (#27) and Pop’s driver, Frankie McGowan. Gillis, a master machinist, attached the center roadster’s canvas top for warmer slumber during the long journeys. Jack would soon become famous for mating a GMC 6-71 (not the smaller 4-71) diesel supercharger to Ford flathead V-8s in 1947, while still in his teens.

Lol, that's an odd and cool Pic Mark. How'd you happen upon that? Were you like picking something up off the ground and noticed the vette fitting in that tail fin?

I bought this truck near Detroit using pay-pal on the phone. Sold it in the winter. I think one of the HAMB moderators picked it up here and eventually Bob Bleed ended up with it. Always liked this picture. 33 truck transport (5).jpg 33 truck transport (5).jpg

Dave Lape was such a Bob Witbeck fan he ran his car as the Flaming 22 in the mid 80's to his retirement about ten years ago.
