  1. @HEMI32 Thanks for posting the article for everyone to read, I didn't know how to do it that way.
I like the picture of the 4 icons of hot rodding, they were people I would have loved to have met.

Bud Bryan and those issues of Rod & Custom were the start of my lifelong love of old Ford hot rods and old cars in general. R.I.P.

Godspeed Mr Bryan.....Would hot rodding/ street rodding be the same without Bud, Tex, Medley, Jake and Senter?! Not enough props given to his "Very Special Buick" as well...he championed "Un-Fords" as well as traditional rods. These men are sadly as missed as the magazine they preached from...

Sorry to hear, those late 60’s & early 70’s Rod & Custom magazines were the best with Bud and the iconic crew.

Good Evening Dana, by now you must be aware of the impact your father had on the hot rod community and just how much he was appreciated by his readers. After he signed on at Rod & Custom every issue brought a new article from Bud and they were informative, accurate and above all clear and concise. He will live on in the minds of many of us older guys and also the younger rodders that have learned from his writings as well.
God bless Bud, and take comfort that he was appreciated by untold numbers of readers.

My father is Bud Bryan. He p***ed away on Sunday March 15, 2026. My father, Edward, most knew him as Bud, was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was a true original, an artist through and through. Whether writing, sketching, leatherworking, or behind the camera lens, he was always creating, designing and building something from nothing.

Dad was a true visionary. His talent for designing street rods went beyond mechanics...it was art. He didn’t just build cars; he brought them to life, leaving an indelible mark on the hot rod community and those who knew him.

Growing up, I didn’t always see it, but dad was undeniably cool and I am so proud of his legacy. Through his storytelling, he gave me a lifelong love for hot rods. Recently, we spent hours going through old photos, including those from his hot rod days, as he shared stories behind each one in vivid detail. I will always hold dear these last moments with him.

Thank you all for your kind words about my dad and for sharing the many ways he touched your lives.

Dana: I was surprised when your dad contacted me to build the ch***is for the roadster pickup. He said Jim (JAKE) Jacobs had recommend me. Long ways from CA to NE. but your dad was easy to work for. He called me regularly with updates on the car and when it was finished he still called me several times a year just to talk. He was one of the guys that got me started on my hot rod career. I still go to the complete build article on the roadster several times a year. Your dad was a special friend to me. RIP. And now we have lost another of the Great Ones! RIP.

Bud's car is the primary reason I have an A roadster...

Early this morning I took my wife to the cancer center for a day of chemo. I took along the Summer 1971 Hot Rod Magazine Street Rod Quarterly. It had just about the complete article with text and photos by Bud Bryan building his 29 highboy. I had not taken the time to absorb the complete article. I found the text by Bud to be an easy read filled with lots of stuff I knew but much I did not. If your interested in an historic hot rod build it's an article that's 37 pages chocked full of fully explained pictures and text on the correct way to build a 29 highboy.. If you can find one it's worth your time.

  25. Dana, I have nothing extra to add. I was just one more person who knew him through the magazines. Although I have traveled extensively with a drag car and hot rod, I never got to meet him. My sympathies to you and the family. R.I.P.

Anyone who happened to pick up a Rod & Custom magazine was influenced by Bud Bryan.

Some mods for a different look

    Hello,

Several years ago, I started drawing a 29 Ford Roadster with wire wheels. It was supposed to be a 671 powered SBC motor, then an enclosed Hemi motor and my final choice was a Flathead.

Why enclosed? Since I cannot draw carburetors that look good, I enclosed the hood. Hilborn Injectors for the street was not appropriate, so, the 671 was removed. (although there are folks who can make them work like carburetors…)

So, what does a Flathead powered 1929 Roadster do on an old art file? It sits there until the call up with modifications comes into play. It gets a re-do for a thanks to Bud Bryan for those old photos, articles and just hot rod stuff.

    Jnaki

The original 29 roadster was placed on hold and sighted in the files, but left alone.

upload_2026-3-21_4-39-7.png Then, years later, another 29 roadster was needed, as I did draw a similar roadster for a Tom Prufer post.

    upload_2026-3-21_4-42-31.png
And of course, HAMB’s Joey Ukrop’s street roadster from S.F.

They all came from the stock 1929 Ford Roadster outline and motors. Can’t throw away a good body style that perpetuates the “hot rod style” for a lot of folks. YRMV

One day, I will work on carburetor art, but until then, there might be more injectors or things that look like dual quads... with or without a 671 supercharger.
