A custom car for teenage parents? NAH !!!

Our dad was starting his 4th year of ownership in the fall of 1960. His 1957 Buick was a cool looking family car that we took one last road trip with our mom and dad. It was the last hurrah for family vacations.

My brother already had his own car, but being the good son as he was, he decided to go on the “last family vacation.” He knew it was important to our dad as we had gone on many family road trips to Northern California coastal areas, trout fishing at Lake Crowley near Mammoth Mountain and the deserts along Highway 395 in the inland areas.

We had also gone on numerous road trips past the border into Baja, Mexico. One being a 150 mile coastal trip along the empty coastline in search of good fishing from the shoreline. His family Buick sedans got plenty of daily miles from Long Beach to Los Angeles, but they always ran great on those longer family road trips. The last one was a little tight due to the teenagers “growing like weeds” and not being able to stretch out in the back seat of the family 1957 Buick Hardtop.

So, for the 4th year Buick sedan changeover, we all went to the local Buick dealer. One of the flashy models stood out was the Invicta two door hardtop in a maroon color. It was nice looking and my brother also thought it looked good. It looked similar to the 60 Chevy Impala hardtop model.
But, for our dad, the Buicks all, looked good.
Our dad had his eyes set on a black two door hardtop sitting in another section of the showroom. It was a similar two door hardtop called the Electra.
Another big, roadworthy sedan...

The only two differences to the naked eye were the rims and portholes on the front fenders. Our mom did not like the spoked hubcaps. Our dad did not like the red-maroon color our mom chose and said it did not have 4 holes like all of his past Buick Sedans. My brother and I said they could get the Skylark Wire Wheels for either model from the Buick Parts Department and solve all differences. The sales guy said that could be done quickly and be ready to drive off the showroom floor. YRMV

So, all of these years later, here is one that our dad and mom would have liked. No chop, favorite dark Blue color, slight rake, with Skylark Wire Wheels…

Still big, still reliable as they come, and comfortable as usual, except for a couple of growing teens relegated to the back seat on family functions... Yikes!

1965 El Camino

Hello,

I grew up, literally, in the 1965 Chevelle El Camino. The long hours spent driving out to the empty desert for 50-100 mile Hare and Hound compe***ion races on weekends did a number on me,. But, it was all a lot of fun. It was grueling and, when it was over, the back bed of the El Camino gave me a place to crash out for a nap prior to driving the long slog home.

Since it was late in the afternoon Sunday traffic heading into the Los Angeles Basin cities, more times than not, a nice dinner in a diner was the better option than fighting the traffic on Sunday afternoons.

So, that gave me many times to ponder how cool the El Camino was at that time. But, during that time, I also used it as my main surf transportation from my house in Long Beach to as far south (200 miles one way, into Baja, Mexico and as far north to Santa Barbara (100+ miles one way,) during the winter months.

Needless to say, there were plenty of 40-80 miles of surf travels up and down the So Cal coast lines for the ever present wave riding fun closer to home. (daily during the summers and weekly for the rest of the years... )

So, it was my partner on the road, the stop overs, the long distance camp outs and for 125k miles, it included those 500 mile, several day fun road trips with my wife during our college days and vacations. The cross state journeys and down the inland side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range all the way home. But, it also included many return road trips down the center of the state as the freeways were usually faster if a deadline was approaching fast.

To remember those times, photos were plentiful as the 35mm cameras were readily available to the general public and I was lucky enough to buy my first 35mm camera from my brother. He moved on to a fancier Nikon 35 mm camera set up with multiple lenses and bodies for fast photos in his new direction.

A lowered rake with the same American Racing Equipment mag spoke wheels with a slightly darkened look.

But, those days are long gone, and the memories are permanently burned into my brain. So, today, if my wife and I were to bu8ld a new cl***ic hot rod truck, it would be another 65 El Camino. This time, it would have what I couldn’t order from the dealer back in the fall of 1964. A big block motor, a 4 speed transmission, bucket seats and definitely no more wind wing A/C as a real A/C system with a rotary compressor would added to the build.

Knowing my wife and her way of seeing road trips and vacations, it would be all of the above, as I had taught her to drive a stick shift car with 5 speeds and she loves A/C. But, the two person seating and lack of storage was always a point of interest when we traveled. Where to store our luggage and photo equipment?

The photo equipment had a stash behind the El Camino seats. That was a given. Our all aluminum suitcases could stay in the bed of the El Camino as they were weather proof. But, it was the idea that they were wet and it was inconvenient to get those into the rooms during those times. YRMV

Stopping for lunch or dinner was chore as the suitcases and other El Camino bed “stuff,” had to be moved into the locked bench seat for security as we could not see the parking space. But, it was a small price to pay for a cool running hot rod truck, sedan style vehicle from the factory.

So, a new design 65 El Camino turns into a Nomad style 2 door wagon for all purposes, driving around in A/C comfort and semi private sleeping quarters if necessary. Ha!

Ready for another 125k miles of road trips and daily drives… perfect for a flat area behind the seats and convenience of the ability for more enclosed seating when necessary.

A new daily driver for the both of us would be very nice, indeed... Power, comfort bucket seats, A/C and a lowered rake stance for those daily cruises and long distance road trips... Yes !
