If you live in the congested SoCal in Orange County where the appointment time 3-4 months. Go on line for Palm Desert for an appointment the following week and spend 30 pleasant minutes at there very modern office. Then continue south on the hyway you turn off the 10 … 1/2 mile to a 50’s cafe for a nice lunch and go back home …..Just a nice day !

PS: if your older consider Hemet where the average age is 80 and they know old folks.

    2 points.
A)Here in Minnesota I never use a state run DMV office. Use a privately owned location.
    B) I have not had a bad DMV experience in 30 years. Why, you wonder?
I am never in a hurry. I would take a day off work and plan a junkyard crawl for after the DMV.
Walking in with a pleasant at***ude and small chit chat while laying out paperwork helps.
Try to have my ducks in a row but if I mess up I ask for info on what to do.
Making small talk in low tones to my clerk about the grumblers, whiners and upset people who come in with at***udes can usually get a small smile or eye wrinkles.
I have seen people walk in 'ready to fight' and THEY are usually to blame for a poor experience.
It's just a ***le folks....float along and let it happen. There are bigger battles to fight JMHO.

Last time I had an issue with the DMV, I went home and filled a box full of paperwork. Anything at all related to the car, a copy of my birth certificate. Anything related to my address. Just a mess of stuff.
Went back to the DMV and plopped it on the counter and told the lady that, somewhere in there is papers that you require.
She found what she needed pretty quick.

They are keen on registration and there's a lot less pain in their process.

I knew someone, wink wink who went to one of those ***le services that used to advertise in the car mags. For $450 they furnished letters from a former owner of the car that he wanted to ***le, from New York who swar that he had owned the car for the last 20 years and sold it to my friend for X number of dollars, with a notarizied receipt. It went through the Wisconsin DMV and got a ***le. It was in total BS and lies. The car was not stolen, but just didn't have the correct paperwork.

Jnaki, you have some of the best stories.

I use AAA for most DMV paperwork, and appointments for DMV visits, it saves so much time.
It also helps to have your stuff together when dealing with DMV.

Years ago when personalized plates were becoming a thing the CA DMV had a book with all issued personalized plates. No names to go with the plate just the numbers. It aided in the search for a combination that was not in use and still available. With today's computerized records I'm guessing it is no longer a thing.

  17. I think if you have a current registration slip and proper i.d. you can apply for a duplicate pink slip.

I bought 2 cars from a family friend. They hadn’t been tagged since the mid 60’s . The cars were still in her late husband’s name . I went through a ***le service agent . Took 6 months but I have Oklahoma ***les for the cars . She knew what forms to fill out .

Define who had the bad experience. Back in the 70s, when I was a teenager, I bought a Chevelle SS 396, all above board, do***ented to the hilt. But I was 19! In M***achusetts!

Took the day off to get everything done, got to the registry at opening time, no lines, perfect!

And I don’t know what problem the lady behind the counter had with me or the paperwork, but she was giving me a lot of grief. Now for the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say…

The head of that office was a very good friend of our family, who had known me since I was a little kid. He just happened to walk in right then and was standing behind her as she was carrying on. I was on my way 5 or so minutes later, and she was so red faced! I didn’t have any trouble at that office ever again…

In my province we have an insurance and licensing monopoly (ICBC), with numerous private insurance storefronts selling that exact same product.
Years ago I had a revelation when getting ****py service at one insurance agent - I realized I could simply walk out and go somewhere more civil.

It's really fun saying "I don't feel like I'm being treated like a valued customer", and leaving.

I have dealt with the Wisconsin DMV MANY times in 62 years of vehicles with only a few problems and was helped to solve the problem when there was one. When I purchased my OT Caddy in Az. from a snowbird, car with a Pa. ***le, the seller suggested we deal with a private ***le company, for a $30 fee, She was very pleasant, helpful, the Caddy had to go through emissions for him to sell it, seller did that, verified vin #, clear ***le check, she notarized the sale and ***le, an Az. detail, filled out all the Wi. paperwork for me, collected the Wi. sales tax, ***le transfer fee, registration/plate, filed it all electronically and issued me a temp Az. Plate for the car. I walked away a happy camper and thanked the seller, 45 days later I received my Wi. plate and ***le in Az,, snowbirds we were, still liking/driving the Caddy, I shipped it home to Wi. We have private car ***le companies in Wi. I've never used one, maybe that would help guys with Wi. DMV registration problems ?

When I got my Model A, I went to the DMV to get the ***le in my name. I had a signed ***le and a bit of paper work on the car including the last registration from 1937. A local amu*****t park owner had owned the car and it sat on the park grounds for many years. The clerk I got looked at my paperwork and made the comment that it hadn't been registered in over 10 years. I said the last registration I had was from 1937, he said no, it's been over 10 years. I asked how he was enjoying the nice weater and got my ***le.

Actually over the last 60+ years, I've never really had any trouble at the DMV and that include three different states. The lines are usually long and it involves a lot of waiting around, but I walk out with what I needed. I do get to observe many people with long stories as to why the paperwork is incomplete or missing; that adds a bit of entertainment.

called the state police to do a vin check for me officer that did it scribbled a number out on the form. When he gave it to me I told him the license branch won't take this He told me he was a police officer they would of course that made no difference to the DMV they said he was the police and should have known better. he was not happy when he came back to do it the second time. When my uncle died my cousin and her lawyer husband came to IND to from FLA to settle the estate and sell the house cars contents & put her mom in ***isted living as she could not stay by herself. they had an enclosed trailer they could not find the ***le for the lawyer filled out paper work to get a ***le. I just laughed when my parents told me that of course it did not work. told them to take my aunt to get a state Id and get a duplicate ***le which is what they finally done. Morral of the stories cops and layers do not tell the DMV what to do in IN they have infinite power

in 1975, i bought a (barely) running '49 ford from a farmer in chester, ill. he'd bought it in 1954. the gal at the dmv wasn't too crazy about such an old ***le.
i was registering it in missouri, which bases license charges on "taxable horsepower." dmv employees are of the opinion that ALL V-8 engines are 54 horsepower, not the 32 on the ***le.
then, a fella in the next line asked her, "what kind of car is it?" "a 1949 ford."
turns out he was dave sinclair, one of the biggest ford dealers in the st. louis area. "thirty two horsepower is right; i sold those cars when they were brand new!"

I ended up with 2 cars when the owner just disappeared and stopped contact. I'm not sure now if I had any paperwork at all .. but I did a lien sale, and for a fee they will contact the last known registered owner or owners and clear the ***le so I could get paperwork for the running one. I registered one in my name with tags and everything. the other was just a roller.
