Simple designs from art work to actual hot rods

    Hello,

I have been drawing or at least trying to draw scallops since my junior high school days. I saw some custom scallops in magazines, locally at car shows, and cruising around the old neighborhood. They were cool looking customs and hot rods to show the creativity of the builders.

It all started with trying to draw flames, but those were actually scallops that were not straight and then became wiggly flames. Even when I learned to use the ruler in art, the designs just would not come together as those flames or scallops I saw on the local cruisers.

As I got into the teenage years, the art cl***es were the places I enjoyed and relaxed when I broke out the early flames, awful, to the funny scallops in my drawing notebook. Those in the cl*** that did not know me well, kind of chuckled at the funky designs. It was not their world of sculpture body art or trees in nature art. To them, it was as if I came from Mars with my designs. Laughable was the point…

To unheard of custom car builds straight from the art work drawing idea table…

But, trying as we did as teenagers, those outline scallops and definitely flames drawn on our friend’s cars was not as good as the Pro painters. It just did not look good or ready for the next step. The tape did not do what the eye and hand could do on the surface. So, all of the “tries” ended up in the trash and we waxed the whole car as a result of our teenage foibles.

And, it all started with the letter “C” as in extend the top and bottom lines straight out with a ruler.

Or with a swift curved line… an added touch.

    Note:

The scallops look proportionate in flat drawings, but the straight line taping is difficult on normal hoods and fenders/side panels. YRMV

Back in 63', I built a soap box derby car. Painted it with a brush. Didn't know they were called scallops, but I loved the look! 16997854_169017146936990_5650384175863943911_n.jpg
