Can someone please help point me in the right direction? My 97 is leaking through the accelerator pump.. I have rebuilt the carb. thrown a new 97 on and same thing? I even replaced the accelerator pump and it still does the same thing. It randomly leaks. I changed the fuel pump, and the only thing I can think is the float level?
Fuel pressure is max 2.5-3. You can run it with the top cover off to see how high the level is. Just be prepared I case it runs over with fuel to put it out. Have a helper ?
with stock fuel pump.. if its too high.. how do I bring it down on the pressure? I don't think that is the problem due to it running for years with no issues?
Gravity and the needle/seat prevents leakage out the top of the 97. So, either gravity has changed or more likely your needle/seat/float is allowing too much fuel into the bowl. Since nothing new has been added (fuel pump) and we ***ume the delivery pressure has not changed, possibly the needle and seat have contaminates in them or the float is leaking? They are really simple carbs. Mine still leak...just saying they are simple.
Fuel PSI,needs to be under 2 bls,max of 2.5 is what I found years ago.... Float high, yes, that only needs to be a tiny little bit high=leak>but also, ruff ideal/ low RPM vibes{ if engine has hot cam,can vib leak { running float low is good,as long as it not so low=lean. A ruff driveway/road can make splash leaks as well... My 94's also leak from same stuff....and I use 4x2
If u have a stock fuel pump on your flatmotor, u can install BUILT UP SHIMS( gaskets material) under the base of the pump in effect “shortening the fuel pump pushrod” but really not altering the length of the pushrod;simply raising the base to provide less pump stroke—-be sure and run a inline gauge showing exact pressure(usually 2 lbs or less) between the pump and the carb or carbs…. .
When you say it leaks, are you talking about a little seepage or is it running out? Put a gauge in line and see what the pressure is. All 3 of the 97's on my Model A seep. I chased them for a while then just accepted that they always would. Now I think of it as proof that all 3 are hooked up and not just dummies.
thanks for the starting point... I will try to set the float lower. it is "just pouring out" the hole where the accelerator rod is, like the fuel is high. Thanks again for the replies! Here is a video of when it was running good. lol
If it is pouring out then you either have a bad needle and seat or dirt in there keeping it from sealing properly
***UPDATE**** Well, Thanks all that responded, I took the top off carb and put a piece of cardboard to stop the fan from blowing on the carb. I set the float lower. Probably too low. But it runs and doesn't leak anymore, So again. thank you. I also used two gaskets on the top which solved the leaking problem from the cap. To those who responded, I know it wasn't a big deal, but this was very frustrating, and it was nice to take a ride with my son in the car my father and I built. It brings back memories of him on Easter. If one of you is interested, I have an old metal "Hamb" license place topper I got from someone on here and would like to ship it to the first person that responds as a thank you. See the pic... Thanks again!
Hmm, glad you got the problem fixed. Makes you wonder how the level got too high in the first place. A too low level will only cause issues when you have the hammer down and fuel struggles to keep up. Over tightening the carb top can cause the top to warp and have leaks . Running the stripped top over sand paper on a sheet of gl*** can help eliminate any warpage and ensure a flat top.
