Hey these days I only run if I’m being chased. Lol

  2. No. they run so the can run more positive caster in the front axle. The caster is to make the car more stable or as stable as 1,600 lbs car with 900 horsepower car can be.

Geoff Bodine was one of the first to run power steering because he was one of the first to run positive and experiment with caster split in the front end something he discovered racing NASCAR Modifieds here in New York, and the Northeast.

When he went south, he was one of the to run power steering in Winston Cup.

Just spouting out random factoids without understanding why the reason for it does no good.

  3. Let's see... Swimming? Allergic to chorine... Nope. Bicycle riding? Not unless you're crazy or have a death wish (and I'm not that crazy!). Where I live the last six miles to my house is a narrow, no shoulders, curvy with blind corners, hilly road with a 50 MPH limit that most drivers treat as a minimum. I don't think I've seen even ten riders on this stretch of road all the years I've lived here, and never the same one twice.

About 7-8 years ago my back started giving me a bit more trouble again, mostly ruining my sleep (which seems to go to hell with age in any case). I asked my Dr for some meds to help me sleep on those occasions. God forbid that I become a junkie, so she sends me to rehab instead...

After looking me over and running me through my paces, the conversation went like this...

The******: We can't really do anything for you.
Me: I expected this, but this is a hoop the Dr wants me to jump through before she'll prescribe anything for pain.
The******: What did your back surgeon tell you?
Me: Don't lift anything over 25 lbs, and especially don't combine that with 'twisting'.
The******: And do you do that?
    Me: I try...
    The******: Try harder.

I got the meds, but hated the 'drug hangover' in the morning, so returned to the vice of my youth. Pot is legal in Washington state, so getting hammered right before I go to bed works nearly as well and no hangover. I still have occasional problems as my 'eyeball scale' isn't as accurate as it should be and sometimes there's no choice (big dog dogfood only comes in big bags), but I can live with this.

And it's funny, my girlfriend who was anti-drugs was having issues with a bum knee got cut off from her pain meds because there's laws about long term use (she got a quack Dr. for her knee unfortunately). Now she smokes more of it than I do...

Most of the posts like these are. Some folks just like to hear themselves talk.

  9. Well, she went to bed way before me (morning person vs night person) but it's moot now as she's moved closer to her kids after being diagnosed with Alzheimers. Not in with them, but a semi-nearby unsupervised senior apartment complex against my advice, but that's how it goes.

I need a better recipe... mine tasted like ****! Couldn't seem to get the amount quite right either.

Seems to me that an old experienced hot rodder should be capable of whipping up some sort of applicator mechanism.

All I can say that any given age can feel different to different people and that’s why some retirement begins at 62 or earlier and some people never retire. The “feeling” of being to old is just that a feeling and just as individual as our cars.

Power steering isn't for convenience. It's there for safety. The guy that modified power steering for sprint cars did so to make the car safer to drive on rough tracks. He demonstrated it by mounting to a bench al9nd with a manual gear. You held the wheel while he hit the Pittman arm with sledge hammer. On the non-power gear, the wheel practically jumped out of your hands. Imagine that at taking speed on the track. Then you gripped a power gear wheel and the same action was done. You barely flinched! Tommy Lee did the world of sprint car racing on dirt a valuale favor! Almost immediately, Profile, in Florida copied his design off a modified Saginaw power gear. Sprint cars run on the ragged edge all the time and suddenly had a much needed and appreciated safety item with his invention. We ran Ascot for over 10 years with manual and power steering. The control and safety factor was like night and day! If you ever hit a rut or hole at racing speed, you would instantly realize the value of power steering where safety occurred. Thanks Tommy!

I’m still driving with no PS or PB but the time is on the near horizon when that will no longer be possible. I used to be critical of old people whining about their problems but now that I am in that old category I am more forgiving. If PS and PB allows you to keep driving your old cars then go for it.

This is a featured thread? OP is 21 years younger than I am, has no idea what those years will do to his perfect hot rod mentality and physic. Add some neuropathy, a dash of arthritis, toss in a bad knee and no L5-S1 disc into the recipe and then we can talk about needing PS or PB or an automatic so you can enjoy your hobby whilst pleasing the rabble. This s FB troll ****. I thought we were better. I was mistaken.

I don't give a **** about pleasing the HAMB elitists or some car show "expert". I wish I could drive right now...anything! I was mocking autonomous cars a year ago, now I wish I owned one. At least I could leave the house without a chauffeur. Do you know what Door Dash costs and Ubering to Dr appts ****s *** and dollars!

Great thread. Who else can we make fun of?

The number one cause of injuries in old men is .................. them thinking they're young men:p

  18. I'll add to my previous reply lol. Up till my early 30s I was big into BMX.....still am but am now severely limited on it. Used to ride 15 miles on a 20" single speed without a single thought about it. If I happened to eat it on a ride I'd just go get drunk and slap some vodka in the road rash and forget about it. Stomach injury at around 30 put a limit on biking distance. The last 12 years made it where I don't bounce like I used to. So while I see no expectation of my car habits changing I get age and mileage affects everyone differently in different areas

I never realized how many times I got down on the floor to do things until I had a knee replaced last fall. Now if I get off the floor more than 15 or so times a day, my shoulders, back and legs keep me up at night. Fixing a lawn mower, changing brakes or exhaust, working under the dash, changing the oil and greasing the ch***is, all are some things I sometimes have to finish the next day because of number of times I've been down. I'm 67 and not about to give up but find it doesn't take much to make me wish I was younger. Enjoy your health because it is your best ***et.

    Age and mindset.
At my age my mindset is anyone can do whatever they want if it makes them happy.

Man I've been hard core into many strange sports since I was a kid. My first water skiing tournament I entered I was 7. Was barefooting by then. Skateboarded hard core my whole life, snapped my neck once doing that, had neck issues and nerve damage down my left arm since. Snowboarded semi pro for years, lived in the alps for two years and was jumping off 30-40 foot cliffs on the daily. The list goes deeper, but you get the point. I'm now 50 and it's all catching up! Lol. I get up and jog every morning, hit the weights three days a week, and swim daily in the summer, but it's definitely getting tougher. I have a funny idea I'll kick the bucket before it gets unbearable, but for those of us that beat ourselves up, or those of us who just didn't get lucky when we drew the health card, it is what it is...

Was visiting my son in Las Vegas and it was 110 degrees outside. Stopped at Home Depot for some items, and into the parking lot, near me, pulls a 30-31 Model A coupe. It had the look with big and littles, California rake and perfect patina if you're into that. I went over and talked to the guy for about five minutes. Showed me the engine, ( LS with no chrome), said he normally drove his new Corvette.
Said he just bought the Model A from his sister, who lives in Tennessee, and was 89 years old. Driving a hot rod at 89 and a woman, I was impressed. We couldn't talk no more because our feet were burning up on the black top at 110 degrees.

I’m going to Bump this thread in 30 years and we’ll see how you feel then. The guys who race into their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are made of different stuff.

    Also, your grammar ****s.

    See you then, God willing.
