Event Coverage Route 66 Road Trip & SWMO Hot Rod Hundred

stayed at the first Holiday Inn on Rt66 in Springfield, Illinois a few years ago. It is retro to how it would have been when it first opened, even the metal frame beds with the 'm***ager' that for two bits will vibrate you to sleep....and in perspective, a McDonalds burger back then was $0.15....

We normally start this event early in the morning, leave out of the parking lot by 9:00 or so and head down to Crane, MO on some 100 mile route for a great BBQ lunch from Light for the Lost. However, there were some storms that came through overnight and looked like they might last until mid-morning, so we started late this year. We didn't even leave out of Willard until 1:00 this year which is usually when we are wrapping up. That was kind of different and let us all sleep in some. A couple of us actually went over to Bret Chrismer's house for some good biscuits and gravy before we headed down to Willard for the start of the event.

Anyway, it was a great weekend overall hanging out with lots of friends and driving the old shoebox on it's longest road trip since I got it last August. I even got to drive Bret's 40 convertible back from Walmart Friday evening and now think I need a convertible...

 

And, a few thoughts on Route 66 from the pics I posted on the trip out. If you are ever on this route, don't miss eating at the Rock Cafe in Stroud that I took a pic at. They have some of the best greasy s**** food that I have had. I recently took a couple guys from Sweden there and they were not disappointed. Also, if you are in the mood for BBQ, don't miss the Butcher Stand in Wellston. It has some of the best BBQ you may ever have and the place is owned by a fellow car guy. As already mentioned, the Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum is also a must see. You don't see it from the outside, but they have quite a collection of motorcycles in that building. Those are the places that I know personally anyway.

 

That would make a great powerpoint/slide show- great cross section of cars and attractions. Made my day- not sure if Oklahoma will ever be in the cards for me, so this was appreciated.

Oh, and I forgot a few...

We gave the CrossMember pick award to Kivett that also had his car on the shirt this year. Hope he doesn't get a big head with all the publicity.

Good looking bunch of cars Jeff! Looks like a good car count also. This is one of the things that gripes me about living in Minnesota. It was cool to see you guys out and about already when yesterday was 38 degrees, windy, and rainy here. Haven't had any of my cars out on the road yet. Well thanks for all the pix and that you all had a safe trip!

 

I think I heard that we had around 150 cars if I remember right. And, other than the rain Friday evening, it was pretty decent weather. Started out a little chilly Saturday morning, but the sun came out later in the day and it was pretty nice in the afternoon.

What happened to Clay's rod?

 

Well, Clay thought he had lost a rear wheel bearing. But, after he got it torn apart, it was just some brake parts that got wadded up inside. Thankfully, he was only about 10 miles from his house when things came apart. So, the rollback trip home was short.

When we rented a car in Edmond for the day back in 2007 it took all day for us to go from Edmond to Tulsa on 66.
And then a hop, skip and jump back on the turnpike to come back!!! It’s like getting lost in time slowing down talking to people. It was fun.

 

No kidding. I actually had two different people try to buy the 51 on the route and multiple people also offer to take my picture in front of the car when they saw me taking pics. And, I also seemed to be the only person driving an old car on Route 66 on both Friday and Saturday at least as far as the time I was driving...

 

A few short videos put together as one along the trip. The point at which the phone goes down quickly is when I realize I p***ed a cop while videoing. Oh, and the last video with the lights overhead is Sapulpa.

 

Looks like y'all had a great time and I'm glad the weather worked out in the end. Fun trip....maybe one of these days I'll slow down and wander down it. Be hard for me to not want to cut down all those cool neon signs though and move them to my back yard. LOL

Pretty impressive really, all the makes, models, genres, build types and varied expressions of automotive talent. Is it 50 miles out and 50 miles back or a straight 100 mile shot? Maybe you guys don’t track it that close.
