Hot Rods Open Driveshaft on Torque Tube U Joint

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Apr 14, 2026.

  1. I have a "39" (78 Case) toploader transmission from a truck, with bad gears inside. I also have a side shift trans from a running 48 car in excellent condition inside. I understand that the gears will fit the '39 case, can I use the torque tube u joint and connect it to an open drive shaft? I also have the open banjo from the truck. This is going in a Model A ch***is with a (mostly) stock 59AB.

You need the rear mount and output shaft from an F-1 pickup to mate to an open driveshaft. But, otherwise the 48 gears will fit fine in the earlier case. Might be a different ratio though. Use all the 48 guts, then find the F-1 output and rear mount. Get the yoke from the same F-1 as the old U joint won’t work.

  5. Thanks guys. I have the truck output shaft and mounting yoke, just wondering if I needed to use it.
