Where Do Cop Cars Go When Retired?

 

I would guess city, county, or state auctions.

 

They do in my part of the state…

 

I had a friend that bought an old cop car (I think it was a '68 Ford with a 390) from a county auction. It was beat to death when he got it, and after six months it was entirely mechanically worn out and he had to s**** it. The body wasn't bad, but who was interested in a 4 year old 4 door?

 

They get 'rested

 

I still see plenty of 1998-2011 Crown Victoria Police Interceptors on the road in our area, and some Ford Explorer based police vehicles too.

 

When I was a kid, one of my older brother 's friends bought a '67 Fury 440 powered unmarked car at the auction and proceeded to beat the hell out of it.

 

Always wanted a Bluesmobile..

 

They become movie stars.

 

I owned a crown vic ex interceptor for 2 weeks when I was 19 or 20. The rear end blew up and I needed something to drive to work immediately so I sold it at a $600 loss

 

I think most of the Crown Vic's auctioned around here became taxi cabs. Pretty much all gone now.

You could pick up a vehicle with 20k.

In the '50s there was a jalopy demolition derby track out on County Line Road. Worn out "Cop Cars" went in...... but they rarely came out.
The carnage was actually broadcast on local TV. I have vivid memories of the Figure 8 races. There was ABC, CBS, and NBC. Then there was the local network that was always scrambling for content to put 'on the air'.
If my recollection bone isn't busted, I think that in the '80s and '90s, I used to see some of the "poor folks" driving high-mileage cop cars around town, complete with Bondo and primer patches (never repainted).

 

I think Cletus McFarland has the market cornered on ex police/taxi Crown Vics.

 

My father was an engine transmission mechanic for the Omaha police dept, always bid at city auctions as he knew which vehicles had new engines/transmissions etc .the best buys were detective vehicles as they were ***igned to only one person unlike multi shift patrol cars, those big brakes, alternators & heavy-duty components were a definite plus.

 

They might sell them with under 100,000 miles but have 2=3 times that amount is engine run time.
The time spent idling adds to engine wear.

 

Hopefully some got turned into hot rods……….

 

All of the ex police Crown Vics I see around here ironically are driven by tweekers.

 

1957 Ford made a police car with a 312 and a Paxton blower ... Michigan State Police bought a bunch of them .....rumor has it that nothing else could out run them....
Went to Birdsapaloosa Yblock drag races a number of years ago and a fellow there has one.... making p*** after p***....just having a blast

 

Florida Panhandle has some oval track racing with a Crown Vic cl*** basically a pure stock cl*** with some safety improvements.

In 1966 I conned my dad into buying a 1965 Plymouth ex MN hi way patrol car. Fury 1 2 dr rubber floor mat and bucket seats. High output 383, run flat tires and posi.

 

they get turned into customs, lol. Taboo started out life as the Washington County (Oregon) Sherriff's car. It was used by the head Sherriff as a more personal car, but had spot lights and a radio in it. After a year and a half of service the car was turned in to the local chevy dealer, has the spots and radio removed and sold as a used car where then it was bought by a high schooler name Ron Luchs and he started customizing the car in 1958 and has survived as the custom know as Miss Taboo ever since.

When I was doing alignments, I had a customer who bought "retired" NY state trooper Mopars to use as taxi cabs.

The 2 he brought me to align, the K members were severely cracked. These cars came with official NY state inspection stickers on the windshields.
