A pic of my wife's beautiful 51 Buick RoadMaster, she enjoyed the cruises, shows and the conversation at shows, everyone seem to have family memories from their past involving travel in a Buick, the physical size of that 320 CI straight 8 was a an eye-catcher for sure. To answer your question. I remember that hood as I opened it for her always, a heavy deal, not spring ***isted, it pivoted on the other side latch hinges/lock, then you held open to use the prop rod that held it open. Hood came off by propping one side open 4" then other side open, prop open 4" and have a few strong friends to lift the hood off, heavy is an understatement. I took it off for some engine work. WE purchased it as a complete restoration on a Texas car, looked beautiful everywhere, drove good, sadly a spray can re-gasket, engine rebuild, I did have to redo the rear seal on the Dynoflow, I did see the leaking. I wonder how many men lost or smashed fingers with that hood deal as I always was Very careful, opening and closing that hood, I like and need my fingers.

Ill' Never forget 16 years old worked at Rex Mobil came to work after school .All the older guys with big smiles on their faces , when i went to clean the restrooms. Some poor ******* let loose all the way upside the building and all over the place. i got out a hose and just hosed everything i had the last laugh

 

About 30 years ago I still smoked once in a while, and I was smoking non-filtered Kools. Those were a bit hard to find, most didn’t stock them. A friend at work commented on my choice calling them “Jail house smokes.” When I asked him why he said they were stronger and made the effect last longer so a pack lasted longer in stir.

 

I smoked for 55 years...quit 2 years ago. I know that the nicotine has long left my body, but the desire for it has NEVER left my brain

 

@hotrodjack33 - glad you gave 'em up. It's like giving yourself a raise. When they hit two bucks a pack I quit. That was 35+ years ago. Living on the boarder with Maryland, lots of people buy cigarettes here in PA so they are less than MD's $15 per pack. Eek!

It was a lot less painful than I thought it would be.
Used hypnotism...not one of those "group seminars" but 3 private sessions with a professional in smoking cessation.
That took care of the mental side of it and used nicotine lozenges for about 6 months for the physical withdrawal...still can't believe I'm a non-smoker...still miss my after-dinner cigar though.

 

Pre-sliced buns are sold in 8-packs because of the way the slicing machines operate. My ***umption is that hot dogs may have been sold by the pound, and 10 packs came to be the norm.



The only reason I know about the slicing machines is because the topic came up at work, and our manager used to work in a large commercial bakery.

^^^^ That there is why I didn’t jump right on rebuilding the Rochester fuel injection that came on the 389 in my Stude pickup. Their reputation for being temperamental and my limited funds made 2GCs the more practical choice.
That’s one fine looking engine though…..

Torque converters are fascinating once you do the deep dive and get into things like K-factors. Also, lock-up clutches are a lot simpler than I thought they'd be.

According to my wife it's a bundle of cat. Not cats, cat. That's because you can't tell where one cat ends and the next one begins.

Our two have a habit of forming a rather noisy bundle of cat on the bed at 3 AM.

I was talking to a friend awhile back and the subject of horsepower came up. I said remember when a 283 horse 283 was the biggest thing ever, then they got to the 375 horse 327 and we thought that had to be it. He said yeah, but now my truck has over 400 hp and I don't have to do anything but change the oil.

Nobody willingly and reliably provides enough raw material.

I've always thought W block Chevrolets were fascinating, always wondered what the valvetrain looked like until I saw one firsthand.... Then I saw a nail head Buick in a roadster at a car show one time and BEGGED the owner to pop a valve cover off.

And that kids is why I am addicted to rebuilding weird engines.

 

Yeah, and I even got to see pictures! The Packard photos were interesting too, it seems like the latches on one side just hold the hood in place while it pivots on the painted surfaces. ?? Unless I missed something.
