Technical Damn Moon Spun Discs / Time for a change

    Really liked my Moon Spun Discs on my “ Ember Glow” 39 Convertible but the darn things just won’t stay tight / come loose and fall off. :eek:.

    Even after lock tight, larger diameter screws / lock washers/ as deep as I can go without blowing through the inside of the wheel. Just couldn’t feel comfortable any more worry about that tinga tinga tinga sound of it flying off going down the road.

    Soooo, worked up a hybrid custom cap with 2 bar spinner that should stay on ( fingers crossed ) as it took some umpf to bang them on.

    I like the change but this certainly is personal preference for sure. I like the Moon Spun Disc for sure but also an Old Time Cap with 2 Bar Spinner on a roadster as well.

    First pic is with the Moon Spun Disc.
    The remaining is with the Custom Cap with 2 Bar Spinner.

    It’s personal preference.
    If you don’t like it, that’s ok.
    If you like it, that’s ok too.

    Gotta say I prefer the new look, the rest of the car screams custom and Moon discs say race car.

    what did you use for screws? had an OT daily driver with moons for a few years and never had an issue. I drilled and tapped the rims and used ****on head allens.

    I like the now hubcaps better. hope they stay on.

    New caps look better but if you want to keep your Moons on, use Dzus fasteners.

    I like the new look, when I did mine I used a fine thread ****on head from the backside of the rim. I tapped the wheel, ran the ****on head in with lock-***e, used a flat nut to lock ****on head in place, put on Moon disc then used a little stainless washer and a nylock nut.

    Ok, I’m guilty of F’ing up with self tapping screws and because the thread is so short, didn’t hold tight enough. When I decide to switch back ( which I like to back and forth for change of looks ) I’ll re-drill the hole a tad larger and TAP the hole / use ****on heads with the Loc***e and lock washer / my lock nut as described.
    Thanks for the reminder.

    Should have done it right the first time. Doh !

    I ran a set in the early 90's the traditional way, the screws kept loosening up, then the disc holes got wallered out, then ting ting ting.
    So you could say I learned the hard way and needed a new plan. Since my cars are more racey than custom I'd do the dzus fasteners if I did them again.

    Ditto on the dzus fasteners : being spring loaded, they tend to work well...

    I'll be the one to go against the grain here.
    While I don't dislike the looks of your new hubcaps, I feel they make the car look too busy with the flames.
    The Moons look a lot cleaner. Great looking car regardless and one man's opinion is just that, so take it with a grain of salt.

    No man it’s all good, I get it, that thought hit me first thing too with the flames….busy.
    Then I thought I’ll run these for a while until I get things set up to break it all down again, dismount, re-drill, TAP the wheels, project. There isn’t a lot of flange to work with, so I’ve got to figure out what will work either way, the Dzus / ****on heads.
    I ran the Moon Spun Discs because I like clean look. BUT, I like the Caps with 2 Bar Spinners on a convertible as well to give that roadster look.

    A quick cheaters way to un-busy the Caps is take lacquer thinner to remove the black rings.
    ( A lot of work- maybe soak a Q- Tip or finger foam stick)
    I may still due that which will reduce the busy.

    My attention right now is my 38 Huudlum coupe steering box, getting that sorted out / fixed.
    Plus waiting to get my power steering pump back from Lare’s rebuilding it for my 67 Barracuda Fastback.
    Then I’ve got to DA it with 600 and Wet sand with 800 to get ready to respray it.

    Projects, projects, this retirement is work. :)

    I held the Moon Disk on with Dzus fittings never had a problem. Made a jig for welding tabs to wheel
    that wat any disk fit any wheel
