Here are the two '33 Ford Sedan Deliveries that I owned. I had them both at the same time. Bought them out of Lincoln, NE. Both purchased from the same guy. Kick myself every day for selling the black one. It was nice!

When my wife and I drove to the coastal beach areas, we p***ed several schools. (A few elementary schools and one big high school.) The noticeable thing was the parking lots were empty. So, school must be out for summer vacation. Now, the beaches would be packed daily for the next few months... awwww

When I first got the flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery, I looked at it as a low powered surf vehicle. But, I had been used to driving a high powered 348 modified motor 58 Impala and it was a change. I looked at the sedan delivery not as a devil, but something I could drive like the wind and have no worries about damaging the motor or my own beach hot rod.. As slow as it was, it was night and day coming down from driving the high performance 58 Impala with the C&O Stick Hydro and 200 more horsepower...


I thrashed it in the rain, sliding around a muddy field in Wilmington, near by our Westside of Long Beach house. . I drove it over dirt roads in Baja, Mexico at speed to feel the up/down motion and all laughing at the same time. Yes, we used it as a nice motel away from home with a secure place to sleep at night. In the early morning mist, sometimes it was like a light rain falling and with the rear door open, it was refreshing to sit and watch the weather change while the waves were coming in towards us.


But, the roads we took and even the paved roads back in Long Beach were now race tracks. I was getting tired of being in the slow lane going up the steep highways heading South to San Diego/Mexico or the very steep freeway coming home from Santa Barbara headed to Los Angeles. That was a direction we wanted to go, but we did not have enough power to climb the long winding elevation change up to the top in western Los Angeles County. Starting in Camarillo/Oxnard, for the long uphill climb all the way into the local mountains bordering the city of Los Angeles on the western edge.

As fun as the sedan delivery was, I needed the motor it originally came with when we saw it cruising in Bixby knolls. It was a rumbling 348 Chevy motor and the whole package was right up my alley. I knew the 348 motor and this was a natural. Surf wagon adventures and also a fast hot rod if needed in our street adventures, too. But, it was not to be. A flathead was exchanged due to me not having enough money to buy it with the 348 motor.

I think the first 6 months of owning the slow Flathead powered sedan delivery was an eye opener. I wanted power like I was used to driving. But, it just was not to be. So, I knew if I blasted the motor to its limits and make it work overtime, perhaps I could get a more powerful SBC motor to liven things up. The sedan delivery was treated with no care in the world and hoped it would break.

I decided that I was not going to improve the custom hot rod with new upholstery or make the flathead more powerful. It was a “teenage hot rod” so to speak and I treated it as such, as slow as it was. It just kept chugging all day on short or long road trips. I never had to worry about being able to return home. Or worry about the comments from other teenagers or their parents… ha!

The one thing I learned in this escapade was the flathead motor was one of the most reliable motors I had witnessed and it ran like a top. Reclaimed oil was used due to low cost and it still ran for 1000s of mile of trouble free adventures. There weren’t any places we could not go, other than up the steep local mountains to ski. It just did not have the power to make it up to the 7000-8000 ft elevations. YRMV

But, as low cost as it was, the continued bashing, the flathead sedan delivery kept on running and lasted for my 6 years of owning it for tons of fun and experiences. The only money spent was for gas. And, week long surfing adventures in Santa Barbara in the winters and South Orange County/Camp Pendleton area during the summers. As well as the countless times in Baja Mexico…

It even provided a shaded, late afternoon nap area just made for me… 60 + miles one way provided a simplified place to go relax and enjoy the So Cal surfing lifestyle.
