Is the aluminum dash rare bird?
Anyone know what cars got it?

 

I honestly don't know, that's a question for James @saltflats.

 

I like the aluminum ones because they should be easier to restore.

 

Next up is painting the dash and roll bar but its been raining here for two weeks so I've been messing around with delete panels.
Hammered out a Wiper Motor block off.


Sacrificed the Heater Box for the Heater Delete Panel


Cobbled out some metal from a left over piece of floor pan.


Cleaned up the pieces.


***embled the parts with seam sealer, 1/4 - 20's long enough to go through the firewall, and half nuts.

 

Delete Panels complete, happy with the outcome. Didn't hack anything up and only existing holes were used so if I ever decide to put heat and wipers back in, it will be a bolt on situation.

 

Nice, that's one thing I need to do.

It's been raining here every other day so I haven't been able to paint the interior. Forecast is for rain all next week so I may get started on the fuel system. I've had plenty of time to hunt around for needed parts. Scored a heater box to replace the one I destroyed. I was looking for a heater control and found a great deal on a somewhat complete Impala dash with a good control and a few other parts I can use. Scored a mint trunk script on the auction site.



I had a nice original radiator I picked up on Marketplace. My local radiator shop boiled it out, combed the fins and pressured checked it. Not quite ready for it but it checks one more thing off the list.

 

Salty, any idea what cars got the aluminum dash, was it a mid-year 62, or where the car was built, or are you going fill your dumpster with em before telling us

Working on the fuel system. There is a local place called Metal Supermarket that opened up a couple years ago. They do small runs and advertise light fabrication. I drew up a blueprint and figured I'd give them a try for the brackets I needed. Yikes, talk about sticker shock, these 3 pieces were $281.


Picked up a Summit Universal Fuel Cell Mount kit.


Did the layout and painted the brackets.


Nothing is bolted down yet but this will give you an idea where I'm going.

 

Got the basic fuel system together. Thinking I'll run 1/2" aluminum tubing up to the front.



Side note. I'm trying to keep things period correct looking and still be NHRA legal (and safe). Back in the day, we used neoprene hose on fuel systems but it is only legal for vibration connections with a total of 12" on the entire car. In reading the rule book, I found this Fragola hose is NHRA approved. 300 lb working pressure, 400 lb burst. You find out just how tough this stuff is as soon as you ***emble the first fitting, lol.

 

So could you have run stainless braid covered Teflon hose end to end and be legal? SCCA allowed that for road racing. Just had to shield it by spinning stuff.

 

I’m not a fan of plastic tanks, because I had one that liked to leak a little from the bulkhead fitting(s). Difficult to fix, requiring draining every last drop. Mine was under the car, not inside the trunk. Don’t get me wrong, it’s looking awesome. Just make damn sure those bulkhead fittings are perfecto before filling her with high-test.

 

Sure, It's legal and been around a long time but it wasn't the look I was after. I can't remember anyone using it back in the day. Maybe because we couldn't afford it. Even Grumpy's cars were metal tubing and rubber hose.

 

Yea, this is kind of a compromise. A fabricated aluminum tank is out of the question (once again, all about the look). We used to sump the stock tank but for some reason modifications to a stock tank are not NHRA legal. Everything is in the trunk by design for ease of maintenance.

Young fugly over there plumbed the entire fuel system back then with it. Of course it was supplied by my best sponsor, the shop I worked at! I don’t remember what brand it was, it had br*** ferrules that had to be inserted between the Teflon inner tube and the stainless braid. What I remember most about it was how many times I bled putting it together. Good thing it was supplied, I used 3/4, -12 from the tank to the fuel filter next to the pump, 5/8, -10, between the filter and the pump, and a bunch of 3/8, -6, after the pump. Those were the days…

 

Small update. Not much shop time lately due to catching up on yard work after a rainy spring. Pulled an alternator out of my stash and found a one wire conversion kit that included all of the rebuild parts.


Found an old (beefy) alternator bracket on Marketplace.


I ran this problematic setup back in the day and carried tools in the car to put the belt back on after every run down the track, lol. I'm hoping a 30% underdrive pulley on the bottom to slow things down and a deep groove pulley on the alternator, none of which was available back in the day, will help the situation.

 

In the early 70's on my 65 Malibu bracket racer I dealt with that pretty easily with a long shank bolt screwed into the LT-1 head, strategically placed it close to the alt. belt, also used a turnbuckle torque strap.
I used a number of "tips and tricks" from those Hot Rod, Car Craft etc. special edition issues that came out once a year.

 

On the subject of a weight loss program, it's sad Smokey Yunick isn't with us anymore, while a totally different race venue he was a master of m***aging the ch***is & rode a narrow line between legal or on the border.

 

He was the example successful racers learned to follow. Push every rule to the edge and every single part of the car can be improved.

I am running same pulley, both mine Alum/Steel dia is same.

Engine looks great.

Is that an old Moroso lower pulley? I have one around here, and the alternator pulley as well.
