Here are a couple of car show sketches from this past weekend. I spent about 45 minutes on each of them, and as always, had some great conversations with the show attendees and some car owners.

1950 Ford Coupe pushed by a custom 1950 Ford El Camino pickup

    Hello,

One of my wife’s first choices to replace her old 62 Corvair she bought in high school, was a black 1950 Ford with a Flathead motor. It was nice looking with the grey fuzzy interior and chrome wheels. But, the seller was not very nice and had an aroma that overpowered the normal gasoline/oil laced garage smell. So, despite the low cost and the cash we had in our pockets, we both walked away.

Over the years, we have seen plenty of old 50 Ford hot rods and some were very nice, but others were in possible building stages. Since then, one stood out in photos and fitting in those local So Cal “Cacklefests." Steve Gibbs is well known in hot rod/drag race circles and his personal car is a great looking orange Ford Coupe.

That gave me some inspiration that our (20 something wife and I searching back then) hot rod choice was not in vain. Perhaps the 50 Ford Coupe would still be with us, but that era is gone… So, a custom El Camino based on a 50 Ford Coupe as a push car was altered and designed. My wife and I grew up with a 1965 Red El Camino in college and beyond, so it was “close to home” for us.

But, the 50 Ford Coupe has always stuck with us in color and style, including custom station wagons. But, not the woody style. A station wagon has more usefulness as a enclosed security area, that can hold tons of stuff from camping equipment to surfboards inside, to weekly plants from the landscape stores. Also people, like granddaughters and suitcases have a nice enclosed area for safety. YRMV

A different styling, lowered rake and clear vision all around for that custom look. A great way for the two older folks to go cruising down to the beach for some warm days and relaxation…in sunny So Cal…

A friend of mine from the old days working at GM/Delphi gave me this to hang in my garage. He hand painted it on a used road sign that the state retired. The sign has a couple bullet holes in it for charactor!
