One of the other welders and I were just talking about this subject.

Why are people acting like $15,000-40,000 dollars for old cars is a deal, who has that kind of money to spend without taking out a loan?

At the moment every vehicle I own is down! My beater truck, my good truck to my 53 Chevy.

How are people able to spend that kind are the taking out loan, do the work 6 figure jobs, are they in over their ignoring their bills and putting everything on credit cards?

 

Under $20K: '64 Plymouth 2 door. It's from a state where minimal salt is used on the roads. The 383 has enough oomph to make a credible showing at a stop light. Midnight in the front seat with your main squeeze could easily become midnight in the back seat.

Under $40K: '34 Dodge PU. Looking cool with the Hemi whether it's a runner or not. Bad idea at midnight to take off on a long run. I'd be crippled before daylight, but I'd look cool doing it.

Under $60K: '34 Ford 5 window coupe. Not my buddy James Powell's '33, but close enough. Midnight? The night is just getting started, let's see where it ends.

 

Depends on what your interests are. When most of these cars were 60 years younger, I was making $52 a week take home and they were out of my price range. When I started circle track racing, I could buy a '57 Ford Custom 300 for $50 and a '60 T-Bird for $100. To get either one on the track, I had to figure out how to come up with a compe***ive car with less than $300 invested. I can't touch a roadworthy '57 Ford at all with my limited finances, especially one that someone else has built. You're fortunate that you have the racing background and fabrication skills that you have, but if you had to pay someone else to build what you're building, would you still be interested?

up here there are 2 listings I see , $2000.00 - $20,000 dollar cars , clean and good drivers , some very well put together and some just good cars or good starting points .

then there is the 30,40,70,100,000 250,000 dollar cars . I think most of these guys are dreamers , some had the car built for them as we know getting a reputable shop to build you a car is astronomical, you will never get your money back .

I also see really nice cars that sound be big bucks selling for far less then anticipated , you do some snooping and the guy is also selling a high end side by side , sports memorabilia, high end bottles of wine etc etc

did you over extend yourself and are now underwater ? Probably .

the Barette Jackson auctions and the like from years past hyper inflated the old car market , guys over paid , over spent And just went over board .


The market I think is trying to self correct , it’s gonna take a while if ever , prices stabilize.

it’s a crazy time for anything , cars , homes , land anything it’s all over the map .

4 dr ******* , Granada ect with good frame or sub & cowl not all rusted out .
Would be my DD ,
even decent 80-88 are 15k plus.
I have a few cl***ic pre war , but I work out of my now DD

Under 20k choice. A pretty dead on early 2000’s Hamb trad car…. Because it is. And who doesn’t want a dual quad w block? Under 40 for a Tardel built roadster? This is priced just right for taking it home and making your tweaks as you drive it all over making it yours. Cool as is but man it has so much potential just b******* right there. over 40? This truck is checking the boxes, again kind of tripping early hamb memories brewsirs truck and more. I just dig it and when looking at what’s also available for more money than I’ve got it’s just the one I’d actually want

The first two pages offers some pretty good hot rods. It is always fun to go into the cl***ifieds to see what is offered for sale. That is a good cut off as the later pages are still for sale and may not ever sell due to overpricing or condition of said car or junker. YRMV

Here are the three categories with some explanations:

Under $20k
My wife has always liked convertibles, although she thinks the top will be up most of the time. It probably would not go, but we would offer 19k cash for this nice convertible. We would even fly out to Georgia and drive it all the way home to So Cal. An adventure in the making…


If the 48 convertible would not budge on the cash offer, then this 36 convertible would be our cash offer… it would be a different drive, but at least we have been in this cross country area for a drive home to the West coast. Stop overs in the mountains and then low desert areas for a rest, for sure.

Under $40k
What more could anyone say, it is a 409 Chevy in fairly good shape and running condition. But, before we left the east coast, we probably would get an A/C unit installed as my wife likes power, but also windows up driving in the warm to hot climates. (Across the country and in So Cal.) And a new 3.55 rear gears for the long cross country road trip without killing the motor with the racing 4:56 gears. Been there done that…

OVER $40K

When this one was for sale, I had tagged it in my files. My wife and I had always wanted a 40 Ford Woody. There were a couple around for sale back when we were looking, during our 20 something days. They were too overpriced and we had a limited budget. Namely, little to none. But, we ended up with a 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, so it was close... Plus, there would (pun intended) be less up keep and maintenance down by the coastal salt air environment.


But, as time goes, today, a $40000 woody is better than a modern used car at 4o k. IMHO

 

Ohh that's fun...virtually spending money that I don't have for nice stuff that I don't have to find more space for to park it at home...

Under 20k:

1935 Sprint Car with 1937 Trailer, borderline at 20k$ but could surely be negotiated slightly down into the correct bracket. - Do I need another old race car? No! Do I want it? Yes! Minium amount of praticablitly and maximum amount of driving fun... I just like original racer cars with some history and the matching vintage trailer is probably rarer than the car itself. A neat little package to just park in a corner of your garage and get out every time you feel sanity creeping in a bit too close for comfort...

Under 40k$:

1963 Belair 409/4spd. - Just because I always had a sweet spot for the 409 and the specs of the car sound like it has the right bones to have, maybe with some little tweaking, a lot of fun on the streets (some of it even within legal boundaries) and also some on the strip...

Over 40K$:

'32 all Henry Five Window Coupe - What a nice cl***ic, restrained hot rod that probabyl will never get out of fashion. The engine has most of the right components to run and sound great and the whole car just screams "jump in, start up and get an immediate wide smile on your face" to me.

 

It's a fun game to play, but my funds and lifestyle are at the point where I need to clear things out, not gather more. Guess you can guess which camp I inhabit! At least I have a bucket!


It's like dream homes. This would have tickled my dreams in years past. Now I just see a ton of upkeep and heating/cooling.

I have a friend who puts his stuff up for sale even if he doesn't want to sell it. The stuff or cars are priced very high. He says he was not looking to sell, but for that price if someone wants it, he will let it go. I get a feeling that a lot of cars that are listed for sale are like that.

 

Yes, on the '39 Woody and the '56 Ford p/u.....not under $20K, but I like the '40 Coupe at $23K

 

Under 15. I’ve been watching this one for I while, a driver for sure. Can’t believe it hasn’t sold. It torments me.
Under 40 too cool for school

this one isn’t over 40 but would be if I bought and finished. If money isn’t any object I’d hire the paint and body done pinstripes or maybe gold leaf Candy Red

I love this game, and play pretty often, lol. Under 20, sure looks like 18k worth of fun to me, and I live in a small town, with a pile of good backroads.
Under 40, though as Sharpone pointed out, it sure wouldn't be at the end. But it's a Willys, with some wicked cool parts.

Over 40, I'm taking this, I can damn near hear the baseball bats on a garbage can idle through the screen.

Ok, cheating a bit on this but I figure with the ****ty paint I could probably get it for $20k, maybe less.
Why ? I have always wanted a '40 Ford, when my kids were little it would have been a sedan, now they are grown and out of the house its a coupe. Way better looking. I know this things a stocker but it would be fairly straight forward to change things up as time goes on.

Why ? This ones a no brainer for me. Always lusted after '32 5 windows, this one has a great history and looks to be a solid runner.

 

BJ is five minutes of fame for 2 drunks to show which one has the deeper pockets. They feed the high rollers free drinks for a reason.

Under 20k? Easy-peasy:

The price has even been dropped. Cool that it's probably drivable as-is, good basis to start, good parts. I'd do some piecemeal body and paint work, maybe leave a couple primer spots just for fun, for awhile. Find some Torq-Thrusts for the front, steelies for the back, make sure the pipes are suitably loud and drive it.

Under 40k: Man, I love this car!


Wouldn't change a thing. If the flatty tired out, I might consider a finned-aluminum-dressed mild 283. Maybe add a set of original style cast five-spokes to give it a 60s feel. Just drive it. On sunny days anyway.

Over 40k - lots more choices but I love the 39 Deluxe and 40 Fords, so this one gets my vote:


Since we're talking a slightly bigger budget here, I might consider a more subtle paint scheme. Black interior means the choices are wider. Maybe a nice rich maroon. Other than that, nothing needed. Again, just drive it!

Well, my money's all gone now so I'll sign off and watch what the rest of you guys come up with.

2dr sedan? Reminds me of the old joke...why's it called a chicken coop...because if it had 4drs it would be called a chicken sedan!!! I'm in the camp of stayin put, one is enough! Do I like to look and dream, hell yeah but I'd have to let this one go and wait for the check to clear then find another that will at least motivate under it's own power and not be tied up in paint or repairs...one never knows how long we have left and I'm happy with what I have and cruising around and showing it to the younger generation!!!
