Folks Of Interest Craziest thing you've seen or heard about regarding cars

There was the story of a supermarket chain owner who had a 1954 Corvette. On a whim, the store he had the car bricked into a corner of the store he was building in 1959, and it stayed there until the mid-1980s. Many of us had heard the rumor, but it was just that until the daughter had it removed and it made national news.

Another Corvette was a 1967 big block car that had sat in the driveway since the early 1970s. I remember seeing the car, had a big sign threatening to shoot anyone who came up to it. The owner really was a Viet Nam vet who never came home. When his father sold the house, he had the car hauled to his new home and put in the driveway.

 

in Buffalo NY there was a rumor about a Shelby Cobra being stored under a swimming pool.

I think I posted it here years ago and someone else had heard of it.

 

Now I recall a similar tale it actually made the papers in Philly.
Not positive what origin the car was except it was a rare exotic.
Some city upper echelon employee swiped the thing.
He had access key to an entry door of the West end support tower of the Ben Franklin Bridge.
Thinking he had the sole key he hid the car there.
Upon finding it those in charge just installed cameras and waited.
When he showed up some time later to move it 'curtains'.

 

A few years back a collector of fine autos about 30 miles south of me p***ed away.
Wanted to be buried in his C1 Corvette.
Stated in his will to be frozen, then cut below waist and propped up in his Vette at his wake/viewing.
Didnt just hear about it. Saw pics.

 

The ***mins HQ in Indiana is a really old building that has been built on many times over the years. A ***mins rep I worked with told me they were doing some renovations on an old section and tore down an interior wall. Behind that wall were some race cars that ***mins had powered in the late 30's to early 40's.

They also had the 1953 car on display that set fast time at Indy. It was in a corner of the lobby and had a video of the qualifying run with Freddy Agabashian at the wheel.

 

In the early seventies I was told of a guy that went to a wrecking yard to buy a radio, the car had been in a pretty nasty wreck, when he was removing it from under the dash a ****** mangled human finger fell down.

 

In 1959 my cousin from Oakland, Iowa was visiting and told dad and I about a farmer that had
purchased 2 new model T's in 1928 because Ford was quitting them for the Model A.
He told us that the first one was still being driven and the second one was still hanging in the barn rafters, unused... 1959

Russ Roberts (RIP) told us guys in Eugene, OR in the 80's that he was looking for a '39 Ford
convertible. He grew up in NY and also told his brother back there about his search. His brother calls him and says he found one...Low and behold it was HIS and the ***le had never changed in 30 years even tho' it had gone through a few different owners.

That story above about the 39 Ford, I had a similar experience. I owned a Bugeye Sprite, I sold it when I lived in Hayward CA. Years later I moved to Stockton CA. A guy moves into the house next door to me. I don't see them move in. He's there for awhile and I hardly ever see him, and no more than say hi when I do see him. One day his garage door is open, sitting in the garage are two Bugeye Sprites. I go look, one is my old Bugeye, still in my name. I didn't try to buy it back. I wish I had, I miss that car.

 

As a kid I told my friends that my dad’s 69 T-bird had 8 mufflers…

 

worked with a kid a while back that told me he was going to make his Hyundai Veloster make 800hp... I wonder where that kid is today.

 

He probably did, for a short time anyway. Those turbo kits they have make crazy horsepower. Stock K series Honda can make that easy with a Turbo, so that Hyundai probably did too, once.

 

I met that girl in HS, That was not painted on the trunk of her Dad's 58 corvette. My avatar was the fastest car in my HS, the only car that beat it was that 58 Corvette, but it was her Dad's car. She rowed the gears like pro, she won a lot of street races. We dated a short time and she dumped me, she was very uncomfortable that her Dad liked me, he was a Hot Rodder, liked my car and me, guessing I was the Son he wanted, he had all daughters, we got along great. The eating part, she beat me and I'm not a kiss and tell guy. The Memories that pop up on the HAMB.

 

I always take time to go and talk with the young guys at shows/cruises as I remember as a kid I appreciated when men were nice to me, I hear and see too many old Hot Rodders *****ing about the kids foreign cars, I look at as It's their 57 Chevy. I was talking with a youngster and he had his dyno sheets with him, amazing the HP a turbo can make on small engines. Then he thanked me for talking with him, a thing that happens often when showing them a litte respect.

 

Sounds like a 383 MOPAR/Fake Chevrolet problem to me.

The craziest thing I've ever heard about cars is that some people consider them nothing more than a means of transportation from point A to point B.

Well yes, but from my sofa I'd guess, it's fun but....

There was a home near the FL / AL line that had a Superbird parked out front. Story was the son bought it before joining the millitary and he was killed while serving and the parents just let the car sit in the front yard. It was still there in the late 1980s. The last time I went by was about 2004 and it wasn't there. I also met a guy in FL that had 3 Superbirds in his backyard in varying degrees of decay. He said he'd hauled them down from KY. He said he was going to fix them up someday.

 

The craziest story to be heard of is about the old (insert name here, "Geezer, Lady, local fruitcake) who had a yard full of (insert brand here, Plymouths, Model A's, Chevy's), and when asked if any were for sale, they said they were going to "fix them all up, " and then died pennyless a few years later, with all the cars getting rounded up for s****. Unfortunately a common true story.

A friend of my bought a 69 Camaro from an older Lady in KS . It had a six cylinder, auto , power steering , power brakes and a vinyl top . He took it apart for paint and a v8 . There was rust under the vinyl below the rear gl*** . He was looking through the OKC paper ads one Sunday morning and saw rear quarters and the panel below the window for sale . He called the number. The guy still had the parts . He told him that he was headed there with cash in hand . He gets to OKC to the guys house. The guy says the parts are across the street at his buddies house. They walk into that house. Go into the kitchen. The guy climbed up on the table, slides the ceiling tile over and pulls down the body panels in oem GM boxes . John paid him , loaded up the panels and headed home .

 

Working at a parts house in my youth, guy comes in looking for two lifters for his 63 Buick. His name was Earnest, regular customer. Earnest was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Looked the liters up in the catalog rack, pulled the parts, and laid the two lifters on the counter. Earnest had a puzzled look on his face and told me I had the wrong parts. Then told me he wanted “two rear end lifters.”

 

Now we are expanding the cl***ification.
Working at a terribly busy Gulf station at a major intersection.
Dude with a Rambler and family come for water. the upper hose is slit toward the engine end.
Might have a hose, have no real time, gas sales are that busy. He, of course is cheap (penny less?)
No prob dude I go to my box and find that roll of magic hose mender.
Giving him a sweet wrap up repair. I get the water bucket put a rag on the cap
"Wait he says this sticker warns you to not open it."
That's OK I says that's for you, but I'm allowed to for service.
Unfortunately, for him, Pops my step dad had, a natural aversion to Rambler drivers.
He tried to instill it in me, but I try to explain the reasons for the sticker, ready to make it happen.
"NO don't do that I can't let you"
Standing there trying to think what can I do?
So I lowered the hood and wished him well.
By the time traffic cleared for him to pull out, I could hear that spark Knock.

I’ve heard a lot of outrageous whoppers over the years, mostly pertaining to the speed or performance of the storyteller’s vehicle.

An acquaintance of mine bought a rare muscle era Mopar that was hidden in a guy’s ba*****t. The story was that the seller had excavated his backyard and knocked out a block wall to get the car down there. Apparently the guy was going through an ugly divorce so he stashed the car in the ba*****t and built a par***ion wall to enclose it, the car sat hidden for decades. When Bruce made a deal on the car, they had to dig up the backyard and bust out the block wall again to get it out. He had a binder full of pictures do***enting the retrieval…

 

True story, during the Nazi occupation of all the places they occupied, valuables, including cars were hidden behind fake walls so the Nazi's wouldn't take them. A lot of cars, art, and other valuable things were uncovered behind these walls after the war.
