I have a 1939 ford got back from the shop mid bodywork so i can install a wiring harness i was told it needed by mechanic who just did engine rebuild. Ive been around the car since I was a kid but once I got old enough to drive it a lot of the stuff did not work, My grandfather was type to only have work done on it if it was needed to drive, and he has a bad memory so i can really ask him about stuff on car. When I ripped out the carpet I saw the clutch pedal has wiring that goes to it, I always just though whoever restored it just left it there, the car is a automatic so not sure what it wouldve been used for as it never did anything when pressed once i drove car, What are some uses it may have had or that I could maybe give it in future? Also what do people usually use the dash ****ons or switches for? before engine rebuild the knob switch worked to turn on fan but now the radiator fans are automatic so none of the ****ons do anything, but there is wiring to them but it doesnt work so not sure what uses they did have or that I could maybe give them. Also there has always been two solid metal objects behind the headliner that are completey set in place, when looking at videos of others of same car everyones headliner is flat, The car never had windshield wipers. I dont want to remove headliner to find out since its old and headliner probably wont sit back as good as it does now. But i do want to remove it eventually as it blocks my view of the street lights when stopped, What could those two bumps maybe be though? Or any general advice or tips for installing a wiring harness would also just be appreciated. Lastly I hope this is ok to also ask on this forum topic if not I can edit it out but is anyone selling or know someone who is selling a original 1939 standard hood, old one got destroyed when my grandfather crashed car few years ago and I do not want to use a fibergl*** one, been looking everywhere. I am located in California but would pay shipping. If i cant find one just gonna have bodyshop leave it with no hood until I do find one eventually.
Those headliner bumps sure look like wiper motors from here. Are you sure they arent? If you have knobs etc with wiring that doesnt do anything Id be tempted to remove the wiring to make any electrical problem solving easier. If later on you want to use them they are still there. Im not familar with those switches but if need be leave some tails so you can reconnect them easier later. Are you sure that was a clutch pedal? Trace the wires could it be a high/low switch or maybe even a foor starter switch? Looks like it might be an aftermarket loom. If so are the wires labeled? If thats not the new one why are you replacing it? Heres a thread re replacing a loom. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/full-car-replacement-wiring-harness.1351137/ Make sure you read this too. Crazy Steve has done and awesome thread. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/wiring-101.843579/ To find a hood post in the wanted section of the cl***ifieds here. The only guess I could have was something to do with windshield wipers. So maybe it's motors, would they're be 2? Just waste sure cause I thought it would just be one motor and the car has never had the actual windshield wipers on the front. But if it is motors is it possible to set them up in a different location that isn't ugly? Or it's either have working windshield wipers or have a flat headliner? I think maybe head beam switch would make sense cause there's no other knobs on dash that would could potentially high beams. But if that is what it's for it's never worked or the car hasn't had working high beams for awhile. I've always seen the car just start from the key ignition but I was thinking of maybe turning it into a kill switch type of safety pedal if it's already there and not used for anything else. Cause I would never need high beams if that's what it's currently set up for but, but if it is a high beam switch maybe I'll just keep it as that. Thank you
Buy a Speedway 13 circuit wiring kit/***embly, they are reasonable price and will be shipped to you in about a week. Install it in the drvers side quarter panel, read the wires and make 2 bundles what goes fwd and what goed back, the fwd bunch into panel, dash, and neutral safety switch, engine and headlights/turn signals, the back is dome light, brake lights , tail lights and backup lights route those under the step plate thru the rear quarter panel and back into the trunk, run them along drivers side trunk to the drivers tail light, turn signal, and backup light then across to the p***enger side lights
Yes likely 2 motors that are independent but wired together. I have a similar issue with the header panel and a single motor. Id trace the wiring of that foot switch and see where it goes.
The “clutch” is the dimmer switch for the headlights, Hi-Lo beam for the headlights. The car likely has been retrofitted for sealed beams. 1940 was the first year for sealed beams. Judging by the mess around the dimmer, the 1980s mystery knobs that do nothing, no working wipers, and the mechanic’s recommendation, the wiring on that car is probably a big mess. You need to really study. Buy the books.
If the car in question is the one in your profile pic it looks like the wiper motor shafts are in place. If you dont have one buy a test light and start chasing wires.
I’d guess the wires could be a retrofitted neutral safety switch that only allows the starter to engage when the clutch is depressed.
There's no clutch Pete. There's no place for a clutch. The floor has been patched covering where the '39 Pedals come up. It has some kind of a '80s???? race car ish... billet swinging brake pedal and a matching gas pedal. The billet "dimmer" matches the pedals. It may have a regular dimmer under that.....thing.
For a hood or local help at least put the county you live in if you don't want to put the city. A couple of good swap meets coming up in the next 2 months (Pomona- LARS and Long Beach- Model T Club) you might have some luck either finding a hood or someone that has one.
Sorry I'm in Orange County but just put California cause I'll make the drive as far as needed if someone had a confirmed hood. I'll check those events out though thank you very much
