Subject, my roadster. My air scoops currently must face forward as the hole in the hood doesn’t allow them to be reversed. IMG_8676.jpeg
I found some spacers at Speedway and they showed up today. I bought a 1” and a 2”.
    IMG_8677.jpeg
thoughts? I think the 3rd scoop is too high. I would chop it down if I keep them. I will also chrome them. It does allow them to run facing backwards though
    IMG_8678.jpeg
again, I think they need some al***ude adjustment as well as some plating. Maybe take 1/2" off the center spacer and an inch out of the back?
    IMG_8679.jpeg
looking for input. Leave it as and return them? Correct the height and chrome them? Forward facing or backward? I think that back spacer needs to lose 1/2” to 3/4”. Looks funky right now.

Don’t hold back, I asked, I can deal.

I know they are supposed to go backwards but man I hate how that looks. Even if they got plated to match the scoops. It looks like mama submarine and her ducklings coming up behind her.

if the scoops don’t clear the hood while facing backward I’d just leave the hood at home on those days

    edit.

can you buy another frog mouth and trim the bottom of the mouth, the jaw essentially , off of it so it clears the hood and then have it chromed and powder coated to match the rest? You’d have to put the scoop on after the hood top but you wouldn’t have the pipe organ effect happening

This is with the 1” spacer in back and me holding the center up to split the difference

    this is more better.

We posted at the same time. Second set of pictures is way better. Can you slice a bit of wood to act like the center spacer and get a photo from further back?

I think that looks totally acceptable as your holding it together

And maybe I need to trim that back one down a bit more. Just so it clears the hood (1/2") and the center accordingly.

It would also be a lot easier on the Ray Bans if the chrome bell is facing forward. That's a lot of shine reflecting back at me when the scoops are facing forward.

I'd like to see that back scoop tucked down a bit more. Slight stagger, holding the hood line. I think we can pull this off.

Are we agreed they should face backward? Okay, this is the HAMB, we don't agree on anything, but "consensus' is that they should face rearward? It is a tough query to be sure You never see a bug scoop or injector hat facing backward. Maybe there is no definitive answer to that one. Bandit T/A's face backward, so that's a bug 10--4!

Honestly, I could do either but lean slightly toward opening toward the rear on your car.

    I like them facing forward.
    That said,
I think you are on the right path with the rear facing and following the hood. A little shorter on the rearmost and accordingly on the middle.
I’m not offended by it, I think it will look just fine. That’s a big 10-4 on the bandit

It's the minutia of details that make the ride. We are fine tuning this fiddle.

My mind's eye doesn't want to see the spacer in the back from this angle. So lose 1/2" on that one. Split the difference on the center carb. Done!

    Absolutely!!!!
It’s the difference between a nice car and an awesome car
    And
That car of yours is awesome.

One of my mantras is that nothing should ever look out of place. Everything flowing and making everything else look in place.

Haven’t seen them facing forward, but personally, I like them facing the rear. Agree on losing the spacer so it’s not visible from the side or at least matching the finish. Hard to tell from the pics, but first one seems to be leaning slightly forward. I would try to mimic the angle/rake of the frog mouths with that of the hood.

  22. If you like it best with the spacers trimmed, that's great! It looks great to me, too.
But I can't unlike it with the spacers at full thickness. That's as cool as an igloo with the windows open, too.
I just like stuff that "stands out" often times. :p

Hey Billy, I like the original forward look as my first preference...in my eyes it just looks right in my 'eyes of the beholder'. In saying that the last photo of the trimmed down spacers is looking good as well, so I think time will tell for your self preferences...**** all I have been doing is flicking between the 1st and last pics and can justify both...

Looks good with them facing the rear and with the modified extensions. I think you nailed it.

I think you are on the right track, trim the rear down so it just clears the hood, then make a center carb spacer to the right height.

  28. I like this one, "just so it clears the hood".

    What about getting different ones:
    https://www.millworkshotrod.com/products/polished-finned-frog-mouth-scoop-2-barrel-air-cleaner

Maybe getting the same ones new if you like those and welding to extend the two to your liking and then re chroming.
Or maybe, this is going to sound stupid....thicker carb base gaskets.
If you could make the setup one piece it would look better, I think it'll look odd seeing the line between the two looking down into the opening.

    Hello,

You have the most unusual name for automotive parts. So, if the standard scoops can’t be reversed, then play with the three facing forward. Now, that you have extenders at 2 inches, they are high enough to be facing forward each. The rearward look makes the three scoops like a ship stack and not a hot rod. Although front facing scoops catch a lot of stuff when driving around.

That look gives the best style of three carbs trying to catch some air for the hungry carbs below.

    Jnaki

If I may, the third higher scoop looks like a periscope that got the word to “up scope” to see if anything is in the way going forward… ha!

The photo above is a modified version of the 2 inch extenders on each carb… YRMV

I'd take that rear spacer down to the absolute minimum needed. Maybe the camera angle is deceptive, but it looks like a 1/4- 1/2 inch spacer would be sufficient. If that's the case, then you could just put an 1/8- 1/4 inch spacer on the middle one to blend the look a bit. You could probably fudge that mockup with a slice off the right size item like a pringles can, 7/11 cup, etc.
