Hot Rods Saved a 3 duece intake from the scrap pile yesterday

I work at a metal s**** yard and 1 of my guys knows I'm into old cars. He called me on the radio yesterday to come see him and he had set this aside for me. Edelbrock 553 intake for a Y-block, complete with Holley 2100s and linkage. Carb linkage move a little but would need freeing up.

How much could whoever s****ped that have gotten for it? A piece of aluminum and three pot metal carburetors? Unbelievable.

Seems like $4 would be a good buy for that. I gave a lot more than that for just the intake.

 

Here’s a link to Ted Eaton’s testing of 3x2’s on the Yblock. The best was the Edelbrock 573 (pretty pricey) and the 553 a virtual tie for 2nd place. Way better than the more common Offy’s. Great choice if you want the old look in place of the more modern 4 barrel manifolds on a street engine.

I left my shop one day came back few hr later seen 4 Torque thrust 1 rear 2 trans
gone , Pissed started thinking went to local s**** started looking around found , retrieved watched a Video @ s**** , the Tweakers drove a like 2010 Cadillac , pressed charges

 

It's likely the owner died and his kids just cleaned the place out.
I've been to several estate sales by families of Model A owners. I want this junk out of here sets the prices far less than 1/2 the going rate when they were bought.

I didn't see who brought it in. Alot of times, it's people who bought a property or were hired to do a clean-out. I'm sure some stuff is acquired illegally. We do our best to vet what we can but you can't catch it all.

I too have had stuff taken from my property and s****ped by POS people so I'm a stickler for trying to make sure customers are legit.

Many years ago in our local dump I found a complete 58 chevy continental kit just thrown out by the guy dumping next to me,from the bumper to the latch and the entire metal tire cover. only part missing was the trunk piece of the latch. Advertised it, sold it, big bucks at the time.

 

Did you ask him if you could come over and BUY the rest of his 'junk'?

Good save. If you knew absolutely nothing about old car parts, which would describe most people, you'd have no idea what this was or that it might be valuable. At least it went to s**** and not in a dumpster.

Does your s**** yard have a retail resale area for all the valuable items that come in with the s****?

Here, all the s**** yards do!! You pull your truck in, dump your load/get weighed out and they print you a weight ticket. (When you pull away, one of the yard workers quickly pulls aside anything of value before the excavator slings it into the s**** heap, then they pull the next truck in). Park your empty truck then get in the cashiers line inside the office to get paid.
While you're in line, you're walking through a lobby that is essentially a resale shop, mag wheels, speed parts, tools, aluminum ladders, architectural salvage-lamp posts and lighting, hardware, boxes of Simpson ties and nails and metal signs covering the walls, shelf after shelf of smalls (golf clubs, baseball bats, antique door knobs). The owner looks up the going prices on ebay and Offer Up and prices everything accordingly.
The guys that are eeking out a living as s****pers and house/garage cleanout services have stood in this line and probably seen some of their own s****ped items that they got 2 cents a pound for, end up on the retail floor, so consequently, they are now all "educated", and (same as the s**** yards) list their "good" stuff on Offer UP and Craigslist to maximize the income from the work services. One local s****per has regular "Garage sales" at his house where his back yard is full of car parts, construction hardware, bikes, go carts, and anything of value.
So, like the drive-in and car swap meets, everyone is seemingly a reseller/flipper looking to make a buck so great deals are few and far between.

Have not seen a s****per quite like described,
I pay there selling s**** price rate that day , witch is higher most of time then that pay to customers that drop off .

 

I wish we did. Owners dont want to fool with it. I get it though, its a pain dealing with the people. Employees get to buy what goods we find.

I wish we had that. I've pulled some great stuff out of s**** piles, but I know a lot more was never recovered, and a lot of our recycling places will not sell you anything that's been brought in, for any price.
