I realize this is a old thread with no recent activity but ****...I have a few ...but ****, so how big of a collection does it have to be before its a record? I know stupid question, but I couldnt think of anything else to say but ...****..after seeing all of what's being posted. Very cool
@Muttley has one of the best collections of hot rod/drag race LP albums and digital sounds. The albums have quite the original sounds of powerful motors starting up and going down the drag strip. It was a popular sales pitch to say the sounds came from real drag racers. Which was usually true. But, after listening to a few of those "sounds only" collection, it was background noise and no inclination of who was making the sound, where and when. Yowza! Hello, When my wife and I were first married, we had a few records from our own teenage record listening days. but, I did have a large Kenwood Am/Fm powerful receiver and a Dual Company record player, as well as a couple of 15 inch b*** speakers, a mid range speaker and a metal horn tweeter in two separate large wooden speaker boxes. We did not have wall shelves or bookshelves, but these speakers were heavy, so they stayed on the floor. At the time, it was a low cost rental apartment and we had the minimal amount of furniture. Our sofa was a couple of home made giant 6 foot long and thick pillows. It was less than any sofa. Our decorating tastes had the record player/receiver as the center piece of our tiny apartment. But, first I found some old freighter boat hatch covers near our old harbor in the Westside of Long Beach. I coated them with surfboard resin and they had two layers of shiny protection from anything we put on them. That was the home base for our stereo equipment. I also did the same for a smaller upper shelf and one for a corner table. It was low cost, looked nice, solved our stereo placement worries and fit where we wanted to sit and listen for hours… Over the years, our collection grew, mostly the latest rock music and some cool jazz albums. Our almost weekly road trips to Los Angeles paid off in the long run as LP albums were almost half price or less. record LP albums were overpriced everywhere, except for this Los Angeles community area. Being so close to the center of the recording industry allowed lower cost and sales. A friend of ours was the manager of a jazz music venue in Hermosa Beach and we frequented that place monthly. Also, the jazz albums from the artists were lower cost at the venue. Jnaki Over the years, our collection grew so much they took up several shelves in any of the wall systems we built in the apartment, new house and in a 20 year old house when our son was born. But, the collection continued to grow, even during the tape recorder stage. Finally, in our last house, our collection was in a stereo cabinet in rows as the cd and tape plays took over. So, they sat un-played for many years. Our granddaughter now had living room that was fairly empty and needed a place for their vast collection of books. So, a whole wall was used to put in 9 foot tall shelves and a sturdy bookcase. It was earthquake proof and held a ton of books and LP records from their own stacks. Not, much, but they filled up a couple of rows. So, we decided to give them our whole collection of old 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s collection of our LP albums to place in their shelves. All of our records took up many shelves and made the wall system look fantastic. Now, they had a good home for the long run… Note: Then one day, I found a couple of old LP albums in one of our closet shelves. It was a hot rod/drag race album I had bought at Wallach’s Music City in Lakewood in December of 1959. Recorded at the National Championship drag races Detroit Michigan. This was the best hot rod/drag racing recordings produced. What made it great was the individual tracks with identification of each sound firing up and going down the track. Names we heard of reading our weekly Drag News Publication from So Cal. Now, they were all coming to life again any time I put on the LP album. My brother instantly bought the LP album after sitting in those old gl*** enclosed record playback rooms the record store had. Now, we could play at home on our own stereo player. Jump up 10-15 years and the sounds now came through large speakers for those “right in your face” listening times… And behind this album was one of our old Jazz albums from our vast collection that was now at our granddaughter’s house. They were hidden in a file box, but now are displayed as era collection sounds. Forest Flower by Charles Lloyd. This is era specific and is a cl***ic sound for collectors. So, now, we only have two LP albums, but, we still have our cl***ic turntable still in its original box waiting for a new life. And, we see the two albums in our stereo cabinet, also waiting for their turn at wide open sounds of the past... (we listen to both on a digital recording and that makes the LP albums continue to take a long nap… YRMV) Note 2: For those finicky about listening to original LP albums, our two remaining albums are digitally archived and we can edit, as well as, listen to them on our laptops, home computers and other devices. On my wife’s Apple Iphone, the sounds are 10x better for some reason on playback through the same speakers. Ha!
This was my 1956 Wurlitzer juke box. My wife sold it for $2,000. ( twenty years ago), During our divorce proceeding, so she could continue her practice of spending money she didn't have until it was gone. I (we) also had an enormous collection of vintage 45's. She has continued to attempt to sell them back to me, but I have told her " I already bought them once before" from a collectors record store we would go visit almost every week end.
