Folks Of Interest How Can I get Young Guys into Hot Rods

There was a 30-31 2 door A sedan and ch***is that was buildable here locally. Took over 6 months to sell offered at 2k. Sold between 1500-1800.
I picked up a 28-9 A roadster cowl with new brookville sub rail ***embly and new rear cab section for $700.
Picked up an open banjo rear with a nice set of 16 inch steelies for $100.
The **** is out there. It just takes a little patience, luck and beating the bushes.

I pick up a good bit of parts from the LS guys cheap.

cheapest way out is a T-bucket or bobber truck

**** I’ve got a 303 olds that’s complete and rotates I’d p*** on for what I got in it. $100 for a youngster build. You’d need a trans though. That’s a little tougher to find.
Might toss in an A front axle if ya need it

there’s cheap **** out there.

 

My dad and I have been working on a t coupe but I've been trying to figure out how to build a model T or a car for a friend that is not that expensive.

 

What you need to do is rent or find “Hollywood Knights” get all your buddies over and watch it.

That was my life to a “T” when I was your age in the early 80’s and the cruising scene was identical to what you see in the movie. No new cars all oldies just like what was in the movie.

 

The best way to find other young people is to simply start going to hot rod events, and by that I mean real hot rod events not sit in your lawn chair wearing the sandals/New Balance sneakers and knee pants.

This an event here in upstate NY Rodtoberfest in is always the last weekend in July in Roundtop NY, it is manly people my age and older.

However there are a fair number of younger people too!

Well you're in the right place for starters.
Having been a member and now ex-member of a hot rod club, i will offer my $.02. Do as you will with it.
If you start a club, make it an actual club. Everybody helps each other with their cars.
It may not be popular with the members, but dues are a good idea so the club can do some proper events and bonding activities, at least once you've gotten things off the ground. Look into hosting some small scale cruises or shows in your area. A lot of businesses with decent parking lots will be happy to host for the added business and exposure. Be prepared to get told no a lot. Host a rod run in your area. Offer to run traffic control and parking at local shows. Volunteer your time around your area. Get your club name out there and let people know you're not a bunch of outlaws and criminals (believe me, people do get the wrong ideas about car clubs).
If you choose a logo and name, be 100% sure it looks and sounds nothing like any local biker gangs (sounds far fetched? again, take my word on this).

Yea, you might think hard about the car club deal based on the comments above. I have honestly never been in a local car club and for lots of reasons...mainly that I never liked the politics. I would rather just have lots of friends with cars that help each other as needed. That has at least worked for me for more than 40 years now. Pretty sure if I wanted to get a group of car guys together to go do something fun, I could make some phone calls and likely have 50 or so folks that jump in and go somewhere even without being in a club. All that said, I suppose technically I am in a car club now, but it is not what most folks think of as compared to other clubs. And, there are very few in my car club that even live in the same state as I do.

 

Guys around here still build 90s street rods

car clubs seem like a good way to do a lot of work for nothing.

No better adverti*****t for old rides than to drive an old ride regularly.

this hobby is supposed to be small minority anyway

 

You can find people your age that have your interest in cars once they see how much fun your having they will want one of there own that's how it grows before you know it you have a club, don't get ****ed into dues and all the BS politics your club has been going strong for 24 years with out it just 13 guys having fun. There is a group of 20 something guys building try five chevy g***er in town really cool to see all period correct another with slammed trucks from the 50's,60's and 70s and there a club.

 

I don't really want a true Car Club, but I want to have a group of guys to hang out and build something cool. I've even thought to have a 2010 and older cars. I know that's a little new.

 

Have a hotrod cookout. Get a grill, buy some dogs and burgers. Have people bring old cars. Have people come that like old cars but dont have one. Watch an old hotrod movie or a brian darwas or mad fab dvd together.

Im in a club, the vagabonds. We just have cool jackets. No dues. No meetings.

You will develop your core hotrod buddies over time. And they will be friends for life.

I was gonna say beer and girls, but op is only 16....lol.

I don't belong to a club but lots of car buddies and we get together. One buddy has a show every year, I've posted pics in the off topic. We don't care what year your car is, as long as you work on it yourself. There was a dude there with a brand new supra, like 1000 hp. And lots of older stuff too.

 

I must have given up on that movie too soon. I tried watching it within the last year, and I just couldn't get into the "hijinks". If there are actual cruising scenes later in the film I may need to give it another chance.

I guess I grew up on American Graffiti, so that is what I gravitate to.

just about anything can become a hammer. Anything can become an anvil.
I didn’t have a metal break but I had a box blade on the tractor.
No planishing hammer, but had a gas bottle cap welded to a bench.

We got a shrinker stretcher and also a metal brake.

 

Do you have a school newspaper?
1) Put an ad in it if you do to ask for guys or gals that may be interested.
2) Have a mentor for the group that is willing to teach interested kids about cars.
3) Have mentor take kids as a group to car shows and swap meets to show them what it is all about and foster interest.
4) Concentrate on a place to work on cars and acquire needed tools for the work. Working in the dirt is for hillbilly's and dreamers. Ha!
5) Get a job and make money. (and actually, put in the work) Nothing is free in this life. You want it? Go get it. Without money you are just kidding yourself. Hustle and buy cheap and sell higher. It's the American way. Sell at a swap meet with your group of friends. Make up a professional looking sign for your booth declaring " Future Hotrodders of America" You will be surprised how much interest that will get.
My five bullet points. Do it! curbspeed out! ( and consider trade school to learn a trade)

 

We have a seminar for the IB students every week on Friday during the school year so that could work I could have an ad in the slideshow.

I had the same issue when I was a teenager. Sure, my friends thought my car was cool and loved to cruise around town with me but as far as getting involved in cars past that it didn't happen and I really wasn't bothered by it. Start going to car shows and swap meets and you will find a whole bunch of like minded guys and you will make a whole new group of friends. Probably like most of the guys on this thread they have friends they made when they got involved in cars when they were young guys.

 

There ya go! That will get you started. follow my suggestions and you will be on your way. I never had much of these things and am basically self taught.

 

2010? Funny, neither my wife's nor my daily driver are even that new.
