Technical FROG MOUTHS, OPINION NEEDED

That last pic didn't appear full size, here it is. It shows the carbs match the motor (obviously) but the hood is running downhill a bit.

 

So here is how it played out. I decided to leave the elevation alone for the moment. I could add carb spacers but then I would complicate the linkage and have to change the hard fuel line form the distribution block. I opted to give this a try. I re-drilled/tapped/threaded the scoops and moved the thumb crews to the left (so there are two sets of threads now). Plenty of room on this side for the thumb screws and the scoops had an additional boss on this side so there was plenty of material to drill and tap.

The side view is good. Yes, the carbs "dig into" the hood line, but the rearmost scoop is still well over the hood line and shouldn't interfere. The engine will rock side to side a bit, but I have 1/2" clearance at the bottom of that last scoop. I think it should be fine. We will find out soon enough.

I like them pointed backward. I can also change them in minutes if I so please. I really love the plating and powder coating. It hasn't been out of the garage since September. I plan to change that this weekend.

The Olds gets jealous quite quickly so I need to get it out of the garage as well. She is trying her best in these pics to show some grace but I know her all too well. She needs some "rocket time".

Looks good anyway you run them , my personal opinion right or wrong I prefer facing forward, just looks racy! HRP

 

Let us know what kind of major performance change turning them around makes, be it for the better or worse.

I think so too. They are growing on my being flipped around back***ward. There will be less glare form that chrome for sure backward.

I hope to drive it this weekend a bit. I haven't had it out of the garage since I cam back form Rod Run last September. Avoiding driving a stick with this dizzy **** going on but I think a little drive is in order.

That scoop reminds me of a frog my father always had on his dresser that he put his change and pocket treasures in every night. I own it now and look at it every morning getting preened and pretty. His old Timex resides in it's mouth.

 

I tried "Frog Sphincter" air cleaners once... they would not let any air through at all.

facing back is best IMHO. I vote for lower vs higher - tighten them up to the hood, keep them from becoming the focal point.
Anything you can do to lower them and/or modify to get clearance for the hood to open?

 

Not with the frog mouth scoops, the hood would require a much larger hole and look a bit odd in my opinion. And I had some extraordinary pinstriping done on the hood by a master that has since retired. I can run the OER small stacks, and the hood opens and closes. I just like the look of the frogs.

I need to stop opening the hood at shows anyway. It makes it hard to appreciate all of the work it took to make that car fit together this tight when the hood is gaping open. Some may miss the blower but that is that. I really don't like the car sans hood. I ran it that way a couple of times and it doesn't look complete. Fine on some cars but I prefer hoods.

 

I agree. I came close to changing the elevation of the carbs so the hood lines matched the scoops but then it doesnt match the engine and without hood sides, it doesn't work for me. If I was running hood sides, yeah no one would know.

 

The look from the driver's seat with them turned around and on the same elevation is perfect to me.

I like this idea the best, cutting the fronts down to match the rear, so they are tucked tight to the hoodline.

I like frog mouths more the less they break the lines.

On that note, if you could mill the scoops down, so the base was at an angle, could you rotate the scoops forward and get the rear one to clear the hoodwork?

 

I thought about that (you know what they say about "great minds"). They have plenty of material to work with being aluminum. Problem being is I chromed and powder coated them a bit too early. If I did this, I would wait until winter, buy three others and start over. These are easy to sell, and I only paid $100 for the chrome and powder coating. Big issue is down time and summer is here.

 

For aesthetics, I think that where you are now works. Possibly cut down and re-tap the front and middle to follow the hood line. Somewhere back there I read that forward facing scoops can experience some air turbulence and cause fuel to get splattered out the carb top. I can’t speak to this from personal experience, but you would be pretty upset if your nice paint got all sprinkled.

 

That would not please me. I have been at freeway speeds many times with them forward facing and never noticed that but then again, I run them progressive, so the center carb is the only one running most of the time. It is always protected by the first scoop. I have heard that though.

Although I think the front facing scoops looked good, what you've done now also looks very nice. The view down the scoops from the ****pit is cool. As for turbulence from forward facing, with the screens you're running I doubt it's an issue.

I figure the blower makes any difference between forward and rearward facing scoops a moot point. I do like the look of the scoops while driving it. Thanks for the compliment.

 

I read the whole schmear and think your instincts are great; dig the rearward facing as well. I love the look from the ****pit and whether they stay in line with the engine or the hood, both have solid rationales. Tinkerers are going to tinker, so I expect you will at some point have fabbed up some slim spacers to let them stay as low as possible while following the hood line. She's a work of art, this detail isn't a make or break deal. Spectacular roadster.

Forward ****s too much fuel out of the idle circuit, so facing backwards is the ticket.
