welcome, a back seat ride in a 50 merc to the 82 KKOA show in Des Moines was what it took for me to be bitten by the custom bug. Immediately changed my outlook and my 55 chev from a street machine to a mild custom. some get it and some don't. sounds like you "get it"

I'll admit that I not a custom guy, but I have an open mind. Over the last 12 years this place has taught me a lot. @Moriarity (professor Moriarity?) has helped and not wrote me off just yet. I welcome yet another Instructor to help me on my journey of discovery. Or possibly send me the Dean's office for reprogramming. Either way, welcome aboard. Looking forward to the course syllabus.

Please help me to understand how many "customs" have broken rear springs on the rear of their vehicles. Do they overload the trunk with missing or modified body parts?

Welcome @Curt Six from the PNW. As for well intentioned customs, let me just say that just because you can it doesn’t mean you should.
Welcome aboard. If Ryan was worried about having his bandwidth burned up he would’ve thrown me out a long time ago. I’ve never considered myself a custom guy mainly due to my driving style and my residence location - about 2 miles to pavement and not vey good pavement at that. I do really appreciate customs, the craftsmanship and aesthetics trip my trigger so to speak. Looking forward to your articles. Dan
