Technical Oil change cost

Getting ready to do the annual oil and filter change on the 8ba in Rusty. I make it a point to buy the oil and filter at my local parts store. And yes I know that everything has gone up but $18.94 for a quart of Valvoline VR1 was a shocker. My cost was $12.11 so the out the door bill with a Wix 51006 filter ($14.99) and 5 quarts of VR1 was $82.15 with CA tax. I did check with Rock Auto on the filter and with shipping it was just over 20 bucks. And yes I know I could get the oil cheaper at Wally World but the money saved isn't worth the real possibility that my local store will cease to exist if everyone shops elsewhere to save a few bucks..If they do then the days of having a local source for parts and supplies will be gone. And no the Wix filter wasn't in stock (they normally carry one) but I ordered it at 8:15 and it will be ready for pick up before noon. Bottom line is I'll continue to shop local whenever I can and as long as I can afford it. Just my thoughts.

 

I buy my filters from Amazon. About 1/3 the cost of a local place so I buy 3 at a time. Vr1 is also available on Amazon for cheaper. I like supporting local places but with the cost of living nowadays I'll buy online.

 

And dont get me started on what local parts store charge for wiper blades. Absolutely ridiculous.

 

Wix 51006 at Amazon right now is $21.31. I'll stick with my local parts place for $14.99 and get it today. But to each his own.

10-15 qt.
I have a few street every 1k that oil goes into Beater & small engine's

 

I believe in buying locally the money stays local mostly. When Amazon, Wally World etc drive all the locals out of business do you think their prices will stay low? If you believe that I have a bridge for sale!

I support buying locally too, but when it’s just a parts store chain, it’s not any better than a big box store anyway.

I also just cannot get past the price gouging parts stores usually do. I’ll only ever buy from them if I need something that day. If I can wait a few days or a week, I’ll just order it on rockauto or Summit/Jegs/Speedway. O’Rielly isn’t going to go out of business because of me.

I’ve started buying my oil at Menards and my filters at O’R. I can get a 4 quart jug of Rotella there for $15. You can’t beat that for oil anymore.

 

I've been using Castrol Cl***ic or Lucas Hot Rod & Cl***ic oil. I find it's cheapest in my local stores, but can get it on Amazon as well. It has the added zinc our older flat tappet stuff needs but is still somewhat reasonably priced. Even still, filters are expensive. Each vehicle I change oil in costs $65-80 in oil and filter. That said, the oil alone in my wife's daily costs about $100.

 

Every car I own (other than the dailies) run VR 20/50 so I buy it in bulk from Amazon. Free shipping too.

 

That sounds about normal on price. Even on my modern junk. And that's Missouri pricing not cliche California pricing

 

$5 fram and some diesel oil.
About $25.
Fram was as the only filter in stock for the 292 locally. That’s crazy but times they are a changing.
The OTs run around $35-40 for synthetic.

 

But that’s a beater engine
I would expect to pay more for a performance engine.
It costs what it costs I guess

There’s no “mom and pops” AP stores around me. I can go to AZ and spend around 50 bucks for a 5 qt jug and filter. STP filter and M1.
Or Amazon the same thing, save a drive across town. Save 10 bucks.

 

There is a perceived or not new motor oil "shortage" going on . Some stores have really jacked up their prices others hadn`t when I shopped around a week ago and stocked up. A 5 gal jug of synthetic that I used pay $25 is now $40 at some places.

 

Buy everything online in bulk, save that dollar. The big box stores aren't going out of business and they don't care about you. I just bought a bulk order of Autolite spark plugs for my Y-blocks. $1.44 per plug (includes shipping) on Rockauto or $4.79 per plug at Oriellys. Thats a 3x price gouge. I'll step back from that game.

I have canisters in my old truck and my Corvette...and I stocked up on filters a while ago for the late models, from Rock Auto, before they quit shipping to AZ. I have about ten of those PF141 filters, mostly older stock from ebay.

I've been using walmart oil for a long time, it works, and it costs close to $20 for an oil change worth of it.

I also stocked up on a few jugs to avert a little bit of the hopefully short term gouging.

I get my oil at Costco, 2 5qt jugs for about $35.

 

Not sure what your local parts store is, but the chain parts stores here still sell VR1 for $9 a quart.

 

Just did my wife's daily driver. Mobil 1 oil filter @ $11.97.......Mobil 1 oil (5W-30) full synthetic , 5 quarts jug for $24.97. Free shipping and delivered the next day from Walmart.

Clearing the air on my local parts store. It's headquartered in Lake Success, NY, and has over 250 locations across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Mid-West, Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest. So no, they won't go under if I buy my oil/filters from Wally World, Amazon, or Rock Auto. But the branch just down the street that still has the old books in the back and parts guys who know how to use them and not just the computer. just might. They know me by name, put what I buy on my account and go the extra mile when I come in all the time with odd ball requests. Seems like a no brainer to me to keep trading there.

 

A buck 285 and sure you can charge tolls.

Go to your local Tractor Supply. Their house brand oil is about 10 bucks cheaper a gallon. I believe I paid 16 bucks for a gallon when at the parts store it's about 28

 

I should clarify local. The auto parts stores around me are locally owned and operated stores but either national or regional brands. I use Auto Value, Car Quest, Oriellys or NAPA all of which are locally owned and operated. There prices are higher than online but I’ve had very good service. I have bought oil and filters at WallyWorld mainly because of convenience.
